View Full Version : Son of Some Plugs, Return to the Cave!
Flaptail 12-01-2004, 08:25 AM Every Fall after the fishing is just about over I clean out all my plug bags and my cave and hang everything up for the winter. The plugs hanging are usable stuff. The old stuff is packed in Tubs or hanging upstairs in display boxes. Here is my S.A.C ( Spousal Avoidence Center).

Nice Pics
Flap,
Question for you: You say that the stuff haning is "usable stuff." I am assuming that means it is stuff that you use in your rotation through the season. With all that "usable stuff" how do you decide what to throw when, how long do you give a plug before you switch? I have a hard time deciding what to plugs to throw now, and I have about 1/8 of your amount of "usable stuff," and you didn't even show bucktails, tins, or rubber...
THANKS
_ZAC_
Flaptail 12-01-2004, 09:03 AM It's a complicated mix of reasons like where I am going to fish ( like casting plugs from a boat as opposed to shore fishing) what is the bait and what time of year it is. Tonight I will post the rubber and metal section. The pics I took last night came out dark of that stuff. Certain plugs only fish well on certain rods and some fish better out of boats at rips edges than casting into rocks. I would have to sit down with you for a couple hours to explain it all over some cold ones!:D
Tattoo 12-01-2004, 09:24 AM Picture 5, far right, red darter....who made it, can I get a better shot, I need that one, can I come over?
Flaptail 12-01-2004, 09:49 AM Mike, go to page 52 of the original some plugs thread. I believe I got that one from Charlie Whitney when he had his tackle shop on Race Point road in the basement of his house. It was a couple doors down from where Nelson's is now.
Hurry up Salty I can't wait to see this. :D
Flaptail 12-01-2004, 09:50 AM Mike that was locally made for sure. By who? Who knows.

Flaptail 12-02-2004, 11:40 AM Eben, she would do it now if she actually knew what it all was worth and how much I spent on most of it.
( Interesting note is the very first pic in this thread is the white deck chair. I was casting the rocks of Nashawena with my bud Eric LaFleur when I spotted that chair sitting pretty as you please in between two rocks along shore. Stuck the nose of the 20 footer right in there and grabbed it. It looked to be brand new and good deck chairs go 200 bucks or more and this one is very well built):D

Flaptail 12-03-2004, 07:02 PM The next series of pictures is for Steelhead. Early Needles by Gibbs and the Boone Needles available in the late seventies. 1st up Gibbs Large needles from late 70's ( actually these were not the first ones Gibbs made the 6.5 inch were, pics to follow) John Gibbs made all these. ( Note rare "Seaworm" pattern)
Flaptail 12-03-2004, 07:03 PM Better shot of the "Seaworm"
Flaptail 12-03-2004, 07:05 PM Next Generation of Gibbs Needles with wire thru. Top to bottom, flesh pink, Rare 3.75oz "Hot Sand Eel", Rare Bumblebee, and Rare Green over yellow.
Flaptail 12-03-2004, 07:07 PM What we started with in the late 70's. Boone Needles. Blue/silver, green/silver and Natural Eel.
Flaptail 12-03-2004, 07:11 PM Needles I made for Block Island Thanksgiving Day trips in late 70's to 1983. The middle one was actually made on Island with supplies we brought because we knew we would run out of needlefish breaking off. I made a half dozen, this is the only one of those made on Island. I have not been back there since 1983. I hope to get back there some day.
Flaptail 12-03-2004, 07:13 PM The first Needlefish John Gibbs ever made were the 6.5 inch models. Here are some of the earliest I got from John. The Red Head is the first one I ever saw and he gave it to me from his first batch.

1/4" stainless rods hung with large picture hangers. Seemed to work pretty well...hopefully next year will have more spence origionals.

vineyardblues 12-04-2004, 09:32 AM I am sure if you are like me and love to see see all the great pic's that everyone is posting and you can not control your self, :)
sit back and relax and enjoy all the pic's .
Most of the collection's are from years and years of fishing and collecting. Don't take all your mad money and start investing in antique lures.
I just tracked a ebay bidder who I can tell is bran new to saltwater lures from Nov 16 till today he has spent $ 1457.57
on a bunch of junk! I only saw a few lures worth buying.
Don't get me wrong, I love to see more collectors getting into this
madness, I can name well over a doz from this chat page that started in the last 2 years alone.
My advice is to know your lures.
Ask questions, find a friend who has been doing this for years,we love to talk lures :)
Stay with one type of lure, or company. And buy cheap examples just to start a collection, you can always upgrade as you get going.
I know collectors who collect only one color in every model.
Another friend only collect NY made lures, Another only collect Stan Gibb's !
But you most always remember that condition is EVERYTHING.
Let's us this newbie collector as a example. WOW $ 1457.57 in less than 20 days. That's a house payment !!! A better investment ..lol all day long :)
Out of the 52 lures they bought I only would have bought 2-3 TOP'S The rest are examples, $$$$$ Examples
Alway's try to buy new in the box /save your money for that new in the box lure for 170.00. Not 30 beat-up repainted , blue fish lures for $1,000.00 that you would not even show your best friend.
Try to stay off #-Bay , If your going to start their ask the seller questions. Many a times when the mailman shows up and I open it up only to find a huge slice on one side of the lure :(
Try local auctions.
Yard sales,
Run a ad in the local newspaper.
Join NFLCC club (lure collectors)
But most of all have fun
VB
Karl F 12-04-2004, 09:34 AM Real Good Advise!
It's gotten out of hand, hasn't it.
Good advise VB, That is why I got out of the old lures earlier this year. Now I collect customs. I believe these will be the collectibles of the future:)
vineyardblues 12-04-2004, 10:14 AM You are correct Mac, the lures that YOU /Capesam /Chumbucket and many, many others make are unreal :) I see a whole new wave in the Atlantic :)
VB
capesams 12-04-2004, 10:19 AM be very carefull of collectors offering lure's for sale if you don't know what they're worth....
sad thing is these day's is it's getting to the point where only the well off can afford the mint stuff unless your lucky enough to come across someone who has something and they don't have a clue as to it's worth which is a rare thing.
ebay can be a good place to shop when your nabahood has been cleaned out by collector's before you......just be prepaired to pay or put your bid in only to what you think it's worth,,don't get caught up in a bidding war:smash: like I have done in the past....and don't have a fit when someone you know [at the last 3 sec's] outbid's you. they'll alway's be another that come's along[hopefully].

Flaptail 12-04-2004, 02:50 PM That is absolutely great advice VB! The most I ever paid for a plug was $300.00. I had to have it because it meant so much to me and it was only offered for sale to two people and the other insulted the seller by saying it wasn't worth that much. Lucky for me as I had first refusal and declined because at the time I just could not spare that much money even though I agreed with the seller that the plug was worth at least that if not more. I hung up totally depressed and the phone rang ten minutes later as I was sitting in my basement head in hand as my wife called down to me and said, "Steve, it's Stan on the phone".
Other than that truly I can say, on my life, I have never paid over 25.00 bucks for one single plug that I own. A lot were given generously by thier creators. I am not in it actively and haven't been for a long time. I think the market has gone stupid. If I see something at a yard sale or a flea market and it is reasonable I will buy it. There are tons of lures on Ebay that I would love to have ( just look at Bassdozers stuff) I do not own a single original Danny plug of any type. I would love to but I just can't see the numbers that are put up. There are those who do this as a business. To me, it's more and if I give something of which I have multiples of to someone, I, 99% of the time give it free of charge if I think they are deserving of it. Maybe someday some of the builders here will be looked on as classics. There are a few that I know will. I consider myself lucky to know them and have more than the plug to look at, I see more in the plug than just the plug itself, I see the man, I see the memories and I see a little of what made that man tick. I see the history and I want to be a keeper of it.;)

capesams 12-04-2004, 05:14 PM " I think the market has gone stupid" I agree,,for reels, beach permitt's, custom rods, house's, boat's, diamonds, land, machine made fishing tackle,,,,,but not something that for the most part that has been made by hand......If I'm wrong then bm's.Hab's,Mac's, tat's,beachmaster's, and all the rest that are making custom plugs shouldn't be selling for more than $4.99.
A gal. of gas is no long .89 cents..penny candy is long gone.
Flaptail 12-04-2004, 05:18 PM Steve, I meant for the antique stuff. Read before you jump for Christ sake. :smash:

Flaptail 12-06-2004, 08:52 PM What I did today. Slip made me the blank, I drilled, sanded, selaed and primed. Today I painted it in a classic pattern. I wish it was June...........
Flaptail 12-06-2004, 08:54 PM Oh yeah, I hand cut the lip as well from a Fixter pattern I copied at Bassmaster's.:)
justplugit 12-06-2004, 09:03 PM Nice paint,Flap, ya got ur whites,ya got ur pinks:hihi::D
Flaptail 12-07-2004, 08:13 AM Tonight the "holey" needle.
Flaptail 12-07-2004, 09:40 PM The Holey Needle and it's twin by Salty. ( this color really catches)
Flaptail 12-07-2004, 09:41 PM Indulge me, I'm on a retro/classic sort of old school paint kick. Two Atoms and a Conrad knock off.
Flaptail 12-07-2004, 09:43 PM I hand cut all the lips and obviously the Conrad lip needs some tweaking.:smash:
Christian 12-07-2004, 09:46 PM oh man , that atom that looks like a partly cloudy day.......perfect.
Flaptail 12-07-2004, 09:51 PM Thanks Christian and congrats on your going legal on the street. Now you need to find the right buggy to cruise the surfline at night and scoop chicks in the day!
Salty, I think your right!:D
flap, an chance of a better photo of those "holy needles" its hard to tell what color they really are.. i'm painting some up soon and would love some inspiration:D
Flaptail 12-07-2004, 10:03 PM Let me try it tomorrow when the sun is out so I can take the shots outside and get the true colors. Also I got a plug from Fishingfreak that has a wild paint job ( it looks like the tank on a custom chopped Harley) but I need to take that pic outdoors as well.;)
Flaptail 12-07-2004, 10:07 PM And your not getting those back either!:laughs:

you cannot duplicate them, they are special plugs with super mojo built into them Eben :)
That was a private joke between me and Steve....I sent him that one that I finished as a blem cuz I wanted him to see it.
I'm not going to copy it, the chinese factory i am going to send the pics to are going to copy it
Adam R 12-08-2004, 08:20 AM Looks like I've got some caves to raid!

You finished it as a blem? You know, I could come in and help you. Ya see, finishing plugs as blems means less profit, finishing NONBLEMMS is much better :hihi:
Now what you meant to say was "one of the finished plugs was belmmished so I sent it to the too tall Capeboy" - that's what you meant to say
Flaptail 12-08-2004, 01:21 PM :hidin:
thefishingfreak 12-08-2004, 08:00 PM flaptail,
put up a pic of one of those flaptails.
i need something to go bye:D
bassmaster 12-08-2004, 08:10 PM ouch
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 01:54 PM oKAY mIKE.:)
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 09:27 PM Does anyone know what the floowing two pictures are of? I know, let's see how good you plug builder historians are.
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 09:27 PM pic #2
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 09:34 PM Fishingfreak, as requested. I made this Flaptail in 90' or so. Stan Daggett of West Dennis was in Riverview Bait and Tackle as I was test swimming it in Lee's large shiner tank and was the only one who knew what I had made. Right then and there Stan invited me over to his house to see all his old plugs. Awesome stuff! He gave me some needles he made to be fished with Eelskins over them. ( I will post pic).
Eben, I haven't forgot your request.
The Flaptail, made after inspiration of reading Ollie Rodman's the "Saltwater Fishermans Favorite Four" Shaped, sanded, sealed, primed and painted by hand from a square block of red cedar.
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 09:36 PM Last nights creation from a Bassmaster Stubby needle body. A work in progress.
Slipknot 12-09-2004, 09:38 PM hook hangers used instead of swivels like we use
amd weights I suppose
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 09:39 PM Nope.
Slipknot 12-09-2004, 09:43 PM .
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 09:46 PM Hint. Red Top bought the company from the Shearer Bros. These are parts of the thing they bought and sold under thier name. Biff McArdle used to build them with Bunny.:D
Slipknot 12-09-2004, 09:52 PM are the wire things the line ties for jigs?
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 09:53 PM Nope. Look again Bruce, you'll get it!:D
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 09:55 PM The two Atoms ( bodies by Slipknot) are done as well as the Conrad in the old Danny Pinchney blue swirl pattern (plus Pink)
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 09:57 PM Here is a Stan Daggett Eelskin Needlefish from 20 years ago.
Slipknot 12-09-2004, 10:01 PM I have one of those in my fridge
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 10:08 PM The stuff still has not been identified. :)
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 10:11 PM Bruce, sorry I missed that post reply on hook hangers and weights. Your right, they are Cap'n Bill hook hangers and weights.:D
BigFish 12-09-2004, 10:12 PM Tell him what he has won Flap!:bgi: :bgi:
Flaptail 12-09-2004, 10:14 PM A Bigfish needle of your choice!:laughs: :laughs: :laughs:

Nice Flaptail Flaptail!:D
bassmaster 12-09-2004, 10:25 PM so give him another one
capesams 12-09-2004, 10:29 PM I have stan's eel skin plug's and the captains hook hangers as well as the same lead......did u know I got his bronze/steel jig molds and plugs....eel skin jigs and brass rings..:D
ps....the skin plug now has only one hook...the two hooker is out dated.;)
bassmaster 12-09-2004, 10:52 PM your out dated
Flaptail 12-10-2004, 05:23 AM When I went to visit him he gave me a couple hundred brass rings and a couple pieces of brass pipe that had been turned for rings but not cut yet. Those are all now at a friends house in Falmouth who has all of Stan Kuzias molds for eelskin rigs and jigs. Gonna have a lot of jigs next season from 1/2 to 4 oz.
Flaptail 12-10-2004, 05:31 AM Well now that he has updated them I guess that makes that one all the more desirable. That's cool. I had a few of them ( they were unpainted at the time) that I painted and used and eventually lost. There were two sizes. Stan is a great guy and great fisherman. ( as I recall in my conversations with him he doesn't cotton to beach buggies going over the sand too well);)
Hey Bigfish, I don't have a Bigfish plug yet! ( blatant Ho'ism):p
capesams 12-10-2004, 06:05 AM he got a 38lber on a 3" eel skin fly....those skin plugs work great:happy:
old brass water pipe.
can't beleive he use to cut the lower lips off all the gibbs popper's,,,said they worked much better that way.
bm's a fruit tart.
Flaptail 12-10-2004, 08:00 AM I would like to know all he knows about Bass River, nevermind all the other places we fish. Stan is one of the last of that era still around. Good guy.
BigFish 12-10-2004, 08:00 AM Clean the box out Flap!:smash:
Or no plug for you!
Flaptail 12-10-2004, 08:04 AM oops!
Flaptail 12-10-2004, 08:07 AM done
BigFish 12-10-2004, 08:08 AM Ok...check pm....you back on the nice list from the naughty!;)

Karl F 12-21-2004, 07:54 AM In the pic with the fishmasters, the one that looks like a Cuttyhunk, Is it, or is it a fishmaster? I think that's one of the ones I have seen described as a Cuttyhunk, the pins thru the top is what got me.
Nice Pluggage, Thank You :D
