View Full Version : Dead PC
fishaholic18 12-08-2004, 08:23 AM Help!
Yesturday my pc froze on me so I rebooted, now all I have is a black screen. HD and power lights come on, but just black monitor. I tried another monitor and cables and also another video card and hard drive. Looks like I have a bad MB, RAM of CPU. Any ideas how I can determine which it is? Thanks.
jugstah 12-08-2004, 12:09 PM Any beeps? short and long?
The Dad Fisherman 12-08-2004, 12:36 PM Yank everything out except the Video card and 1 memory stick. Then Power it back on. If you get something on your screen start putting back 1 this at a time until it fails. If it doesn't come up put in a different stick of memory, if it still doesn't come up you've narrowed it down to your motherboard/processor or Video card
fishaholic18 12-08-2004, 12:46 PM No beeps.
I'm pretty sure my ram has to run as a pair.(Rambus)
I tried a good vid. card.
jugstah 12-08-2004, 01:59 PM Try checking your power supply.
JohnR 12-08-2004, 02:36 PM does the fan hint at turning before it dies?
Watch the power supply fan at the back of the computer, reach arouns hit thee power buttong while watching the fan - see if it moves...
fishaholic18 12-08-2004, 02:44 PM Power supply fan and cpu fans stay on.
I can't even get to bios, just black screen.
jugstah 12-08-2004, 09:34 PM Usually if the CPU has fried, there'd be some beeps. Wonder if maybe your MB is toasted?
fishaholic18 12-08-2004, 11:23 PM I think I'm going for a new mb and ram off NewEgg.com. Thanks for the help guys.
This site is great, fishing and problem solving. Now ...... I have this problem with my wife......nevermind.....:laughs: :laughs:
jugstah 12-09-2004, 08:09 AM newegg.com rocks.
fishaholic18 12-09-2004, 08:28 AM I think I'm going with this.

jugstah 12-09-2004, 11:44 AM That MB compatible with the CPU you currently have?
And Ram seems expensive, are you a high-end user?

My cpu is an Intel 2.4Ghz, 533Mhz FSB
I do o.c. it to play games at times.
I've used that ram in a few pc's I built for friends and haven't had a prob., what do u suggest?
jugstah 12-09-2004, 04:30 PM Hopefully in your case, it's not the CPU that's fried, since you mention you OC your PC. But that's a good start. And OCing shortens the life of a CPU and components, but I'm sure you already know that if you know how to OC.
And the RAM's fine, just a matter of preference.
Good luck!
fishaholic18 12-09-2004, 04:38 PM I tried the cpu in another pc and it's good. I don't oc too much for too long. I may upgrade to 800 FSB cpu while I'm at it.
jugstah 12-10-2004, 08:07 AM Go for it. :-)
let me know how you make out.
