Due to my cheap dull chisels (I think) I have been chipping the wood as I turn it. Some of the chips I can sand out, but not all.

Is there any harm in giving the plug a light coat of Devcon 30 epoxy to fill the voids before prime and paint? Figure I could just skuff the epoxy and go from there, but it's nice to run it by the experts.

I've been sharpening before use, but like I said . . . they're cheap wood chisels. Maybe Santa will bring me some nice ones for Christmas.

try going a little slower, take smaller "bites"
might be worth a shot.

You could also try sanding with #60 or #80 sand paper spinning on your lathe and work upto your final finish paper.

All of the above as afterhours suggests. Devcon 30 minute can also be used under the paint. Scuff it with a scotch bright pad or fine sandpaper before paint.

I coat most red cedar bodies with what I call a "finger coat" (applied by hand, with latex gloves on) of Devcon 5 minute epoxy... keeps anyone from thinking it's a booger blank.:laughs:

Just wait one hour, then prime and paint. If you wait longer, then you'll have to knock the sheen off the epoxy first, but I haven't seen any ill effects doing my way.
