'Twas the Night Before Finals

Twas the night before finals,
And all through the college,
The students were praying
For last minute knowledge.
Most were quite sleepy,
But none touched their beds,
While visions of essays
Danced in their heads.
Out in the taverns,
A few were still drinking,
And hoping that liquor
Would loosen up their thinking.
In my own apartment,
I had been pacing,
And dreading exams
I soon would be facing.
My roommate was speechless,
His nose in his books,
And my comments to him
Drew unfriendly looks.
I drained all the coffee,
And brewed a new pot,
No longer caring
That my nerves were shot.
I stared at my notes,
But my thoughts were muddy,
My eyes went a blur,
I just couldn't study.
"Some pizza might help,"
I said with a shiver,
But each place I called
Refused to deliver.
I'd nearly concluded
That life was too cruel,
With futures depending
On grades had in school.
When all of a sudden,
Our door opened wide,
And Patron Saint Put It Off
Ambled inside.
Her spirit was careless,
Her manner was
mellow,
Her attitude fearless,
She started to bellow:

"What kind of student
Would make such a fuss,
To toss back at teachers
What they tossed at us?"

On Cliff Notes! On Crib Notes!
On Last Year's Exams!
On Wingit and Slingit,
And Last Minute Crams!"

Her message delivered,
She vanished from sight,
But we heard her laughing
Outside in the night.
"Your teachers have pegged you,
So just do your best.
Happy Finals to All,
And to All, a good test."

The finals prayer:

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not flunk;
He keepeth me from lying down when I should be studying.
He leadeth me to rivers of Mountain Dew when I need to be refreshed;
He restoreth my faith in study guides.
He guides me to better study habits
For my grade's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of borderline grades,
I will not have a nervous breakdown;
For thou art with me.
The words "grading" and "curve", when combined, they comfort me.
Thou givest me answers in moments of blankness;
Thou anointest my head with understanding.
My test paper runneth over with questions I recognize.
Surely passing grades and flying colors shall follow me
All the days of my examinations,
And I shall not have to dwell in this university forever,
Amen.

one of my best friends sent it to me, and she heard it from another friend from college...ultimately, someone wrote it at one point or another...

You guys will have this messed up dream years after you graduate from skool. I have this dream every few weeks and it pisses me off everytime I wake up from it.

It goes like this: It's the last day of final exams in your last semester in college. Graduation is a week away.

You have not studied one bit for your exams, the tests are hours away and YOU ARE FREAKING OUT BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO FAIL AND NOT GRADUATE. :err:

It's a relief to wake up. :hihi:

I thought only I had that dream Ben. :laughs: It was a lot more frequent the first decade after I grduated then the second decade. Thanks for bringing it back to the surface now :smash:

I have another dream of walking around campus with a pointy stick picking up trash as my livelyhood. Had flashbacks for a while after we did the shore cleanup last spring and you told that inquiring lady you were a homeless person looking for cans. :laughs:

I wonder what that dream signifies, Ed. I'm sure it must be in some dream interpretation handbook somewhere. Is life a test? Is that the metaphor?

Am I gonna fail? :laughs:
