What do you guys use as an obtainable reasonably priced wood for your plugs? Are certain types of wood used for certain types of plugs? Is a certain style of plug's preformance enhanced by a specific type of wood? Like different types for needles or floaters or swimmwers, etc., or will any wood just do for any type of plug. I understand that the placement of hardware, weights, hooks, ect. have a bearing on the performance of the plug but does the wood type itself have a bearing on the plug too. Hopefully these are not trade secrets if so I understand. Thanks P.M.

The search engine can find tons of stuff.
I would say as a general rule that I am sure has exceptions, lighter woods float higher and heavier sink easier.
Also closed grain woods are easier to finish with paint.

And the tighter the grain and harder the wood , the longer it must sit in the sealer. ;)

I use whatever I have.

cedar is good for swimmer because it's light

needles can be anything , weight it how you want it.

mostly I like AYC but it's getting to be a hassle to find and expensive, so I use scraps. Lots of my needles are maple from leftover scraps. I have some 8/4 maple that will make wonderful darters someday.

pr ,Im going to tell You something You should do.
find a 2x2 pc of balsa wood. turn a danny phat boy like I do.
weight it and then jig it up and put on a heavy coat of epoxy alot will soak in. then wet sand it or scuff it and prime then paint then epoxy it again and swim it.
I have not done the balsa wood yet ,ned to find some. but have with another wood on some very special plugs i made for me and the action is to die for and the best part is the bass go bonkers,
the lures will swim in fastest of the fast water and will not roll out and if done right. You can use a danny lip or a pike lip each has there own action and if You place some 3/0 trebles You may not need any weight .
paint the plug yellow or white....................
