All of a sudden it seems like the tranny is slipping on my F-150.
Feeling really funky when I accelerate.

I'm peesed , only has 66K on it, sure I pulled the boat here and there, but its a freakin truck, supposed to be able to handle it. Plus I really dont haul it much any more cause shes in a marina.

Great timing, no raise this year, no xmas bonus this year, shes put of work and spending money like mad. Plus daughters college tuiton is due, just had a leaking roof that had to be fixed. before it ruined the office. Now this,,,,,,, GRRRRRUMP !!!!!!!!!!!

i guess, I'll get it into a shop soon and see what the damage is,

Does it vibrate when you accelerate? If so good be a U joint problem.

Fluid is full and looks pink.

Warranty is out and Extended too. (I'm screwed on that, but i'm gonna call the dealer anyway and double check on the powertrain warranty) Trucks a 97'.

Doesn't seem like U joints, it happens worse in the OD gear, (thats like 4th gear). If I hit the pedal hard it down shifts and sure feels like a slip, not a shake like u joints.

Think a fluid and filter change might help?

When was last fluid change?
Do the flush, not just the 5 quart and filter.
97 150 with trailer package ( tranny cooler) should take 14 quarts.
If you have never changed fluid, definatley try the flush and fill.

flush and check adjustments too...

I see if there are vibrations it could be u joints i have a 97 and when i accelerate up near 65 theres a vibration it makes the car shake if you slow down or take your foot off the gas it goes away then there is a clunking when you accelerate I know thats the u joint but u joints can cause this shake.

Make sure they drop the pan and put in a new filter. Don't go to Jiffy Lube. All they do is cycle the fliud till it comes out clean. I did this last winter (Jiffy Lube) and had to have a tranny rebuild a month later.:af: About 1700 I was peeesed. The tranny shop told me that when they cycle fluid all it does is push the crap from bottom of pan all through the system. Pan has to be dropped to do it correctly. Also make sure they drain the torque converter.

I think my fuel injector on my 1994 GMC Jimmy SLT is going out the window again, this will soon be my 2nd time replacing it, and they say its a very common issue with these models.

I think the next vehicle will NOT be an american brand...

I have already swore off any GM product due to consistant poor workmanship in many models I owned over the years.

Think I'm swearing off fords now too. Had to replace the tranny in the wifes taurus a few years back too. Hmmmmm !!!!

Just keeping my fingers crossed that I can get out of this for repair costs only, not replacement...

There's some pretty decent tranny shops, stay away from the dealership, they screw you to the last dime.

There is No such thing as an all American built car!!!
And LOTS of "Foreign " cars are built in this country anyway!!!

All vehicles, whether foreign or american, are equal opportunity "crap when you least expect it" vehicles.

I gotta 97 F-150 well on it's way to 175K and it has been pulling all of its life but I am very meticulous about the tranny fluid and filters as well as the other fluids, I have also removed the tranny lines from the radiator and installed them to a seperate cooler when it was under 70k. This truck has given me no trouble at all and still looks and drives like new. Check your door on Manufacturer date you may be surprised like I was that it was built in 96 making it almost 9 years old. You may get lucky and just be able to change fluid and filter an off you will go just keep your fingers crossed

Still from everything I'm hearing, a toyota truck is superior in quality to an american made. No matter where its built.

I know what you mean vector, it like a roll of the dice. When the misses had an olds, just like her friends, we figured it would last like hers, NO WAY. we musta got a friday car. POC from the minute it left the dealership. While her friends ran 200K miles with minimal repair...Theres no way to guess,

My buddy has owned F150s since we were in high school, and has had great luck with all trucks hes got a plumbing business and uses the truck for what it supposed to be made for.
Again I only have 66K, and most of it is easy miles.

Definetly try that complete flush, I had a '96 Dodge Stratus w/ 200,000 on it and it was slipping ( i know, shocker there) but it did improve with the full flush..Then I got rid of it...for the reasons above, (Dodge Stratus=200K) can't complain though, it didn't owe me anything.......

Just got off the phone with the dealer, all original and extended warranties are expired. He did also suggest a system flush, he said this is done without removing the pan or changing the filter. He thinks it might just be gunked up since the lower gears and reverse are OK. He also said if it was electronic control, the check engine light should be on. so again he suggests a total flush. Said it flushses forward and backward flow and removes all debris.
Also said it will clean out the valve body. ?? Does that make sense ??

One of my brothers is riding a truck he refuses to give up, regardless of it being a rust bucket, and it has well over 300k miles on the original engine. And says it fits him like a glove, and it runs, and he doesn't have to pay for it, so he loves it.

Van, I have 20+ years experience overhauling Dodge tranny's at a dealership. A flush will not clean the valve body. Your best bet is to have a transmission tech. at the dealership remove the pan and take a look inside. He should be able to tell if there is internal damage by what is found in the pan and filter. A flush is a maintainance thing and will most likely not fix a problem. A plugged filter ,on the other hand ,could be causing a problem, I hope for your sake, but the pan must be removed to see that. Good luck. Let me know if you need any advice.

Here is a good one, my 97 Expedition the "#^&#^&#^&#^& light for the overdrive on the shifter is flashing sometimes. I have only noticed it on the highway, pushing the button does nothing. If I park the truck and shut it off problem solved. Other times I drive on the highway it's ok. These new cars are too smart for their own good. :smash:

Code for that Bill, means it's slipping on the hiway. Mine did same thing, had my bud drop the pan, clean the screen, then pump flush the tranny and tourqe converter. No more flashing light.

Barely made it home from work today (10 miles).
It hardly moves in 3rd or OD, and is slipping in the lower gears now too.

Mechanic I know hooked me up with his tranny guy, hes gonna check it out for free. I have a feeling if it makes it there its gonna stay there. I'm on vacation now til after new year so at least I have to use the freaking T ...

Then there was my t-bird....(which to this day I swear was possessed by demons) WE WONT GO THERE!!!!!!

sad when you by a vehicle twice...once for the vehicle itself and twice in parts

P.S. 193k on original engine of my corolla and she's still going strong with VERY few repairs. Not pretty but at least I dont stress about weather I will make it to work and back everyday.

I hear ya Jenn. I got about 130k on mine, last year it was an alternator rebuild, belt, and battery, lower ball joints, and tierod ends. The thing still runs like a top sp I guess it's worth it.

Truck ran fine but it was the tranny issues that cost us a fortune.
A rebuild finally fixed it. Good luck:(

Good news is:

Problem was NOT the tranny. Seems some sensors were going nuts because of another problem. These caused the engine to skip, but only at higher sppeds. But then at all speeds, and especially when shifting.

On the way to the shop, the check engine light came on and the truck shook like mad all the way. I thought it would not make it.

Bad News is:

It was also a bad coil on a cylinder. They replaced the plugs, the faulty coil, and the bad tranny/engine sensor. $$$$ is up there, but not as high as it would have been with the tranny.

At least I feel better about the truck not having a MAJOR problem like transmission, thats why i bought a big truck with a big engine, so it would last pulling my boat.

Picking her up tomorrow. He said its running GREAT !!!!!

Cheapest price I found thus far: $3,000 for re-manufactured tranny (from England, of course), + $800 labor. :wall:

I wish I could scrounge up some C-4 and just blow the dang thing to hell.

With the miles you have on it, service the fluid and filter on the transmission anyway!!!
