So, what is your favorite fishing book to pass the winter by? Is it the most informative how to, or is it the book that you read cover to cover and then pick up again and start all over? I try to read as much as I can find on anything fishing related. Sometimes you can pull info from books not directly related to surf fishing or even striped bass.

As far as most read, "20 Years on the Cape" is at the top of my list. I am working on "Striper Chronicles" right now. I can see that being one of my new favorite reads!

For How-To, "Surf Fishing at Night" is hard to beat in my library.

Hey T-Lap...gotta agree with you on "20 Years On The Cape";) only read it about 12 times so far but I am due to pick it up again.:D You ever read "Surfcasters Quest"? Written by Roy Rowan?:) Thats another favorite.

BF - I read that just before i went to Block this year. I am planning on reading it again now that I am familiar with the island. I really enkoyed it, but have only read it once. I didn't like the ending too much, though. It seemed a little too artsy/preachy for me.

Striper Surf by Frank D is an excellent how to book. I enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. Eastern Tides is also a great book it is a story rather than a how to. I would like to read some of his other books also just have not got around to it.

I really enjoyed Reading The Water..On The Run is pretty good too..I did find some good info in a new book I grabbed Salt Water Fishing Tactics from Salt Water Sportsman Mag....I Have to get a hold of 20 yrs...That is my must get next book, but it is not to be found in Boston???:smash:

The only two fishing books I have ever read are "20 years on the Cape" (last year) and just finished "On the Run". Both good reads.
Other than that its only "On the Water" and "Striped-Bass.com" for me.

Just finished Eastern Tides. Good read. Just finished on the run also makes me want to try and follow the migration. Striper surf read it for the second time. Recently read Striper chronicles also. Once I start one of these books I usually finish it within a day. They are just to interesting to put down.

Didnt like striper chronicles, should have been called "rich guys pursuit of stiped bass" found it boring, a few of the jamestown stories were decent, but talk to any Block regular from the 80's and you can get better first hand stories


As far as reading, I like 20 years, Eastern tides was decent, trophy striper was decent as well, but neither were 20 years

Dont waste money on Linda Greenlaws new book "All fisherman are liars...." snoooooooze!!!!! She should have stopped after hungry ocean...

If you read "20 yearsthen you have read all the rest. He just changes names and more hot air. The Fly book is mis-timed he should have done it 11 years ago when Saltwater FF was really hot. Twenty Years is a great how to book and he doesn't even know he did it that way. It was supposed to be a chronicle of his life on the beach. You too could have written it if you lived in a camper out on the outer cape each summer for two months a year when access was good and fishing was good and no seals. If you fish race point or the back beach everything you ever really needed to know is in that book you just gotta wade through his bs and he lays out it bare for all who would take the time to really look. Once I figured out all the little hints my Race score quadrupled, all when he espouses not sharing anything with anybody. He was good no doubt about it but he was pompous and still is and his day has passed.:smash:

Flap hit it on the head IMO. Have all the FD's books...they are OK, good info but most of it is re-cycled IMO. And the my-life thing I really didn't care for at all. My fav FD book is...100 hot spots. While I disagree with his choice and he didn't even include CH (how is this possible?) It was fun to check them off my list of places I have fished.

reading the water is good but it if you have no connection with these guys I can see it boring.

Quest is almost poetic. I like the "why" we fish books.

Cronicles was good. Funny I never saw this guy while I was there all those years but it was fun to read.

I like reading the old woolner and lyman books...yeah most are dated but it brings back a lot of memories and the info is still solid today..hell you guys are re-building the classic plugs they used and hailing them as timeless.


Right now on my bedstand are three books:
the shining tides..a classic but I fall asleep when I read this
the surfcaster guide to baits, rigs and lure (rosko) I really like reading about gear.
and Striped bass fishing (karas)..70's vintage but enjoyable.

Just finished reading "20 years.." twice.

Next up is "Reading the Water"

I reread 20 years and striper surf every winter, but I also check out bass from the beach before heading to the Island.

Reading The Water is my on deck book, too. Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I have been searching for possible b'day presents for the Dad who has everything already and found the two following sites. Hmm.. not fishing but I try to read Siddartha every winter. I love how he finds (in the river) what he has been seeking his whole life.

Just started Reading The Water, I plan to fish CH and the Block before MV but look forward to anything usefull I learn and feeding that desire for anything fishing through the winter.

i just got done with "reading the water" by robert post. its a very good book the thing i like is alot of the storys in the book tie into eatch other it covers the The wacky characters and stories of some of the vineyards legends.

"on the run " by david DiBenedetto it follows the stripers migration from maine to the Carolinas. i could not stop reading this book i wanted to see what happens next
