I was at Stop & Shop yesterday buying stuff for my diet. I get in line to pay and am behind a woman using the vouchers for welfare. It is a slow process as they have to be checked individually. Only certain items can be purchased with each voucher. I waited paitently and paid for my items. Then when I go to drive out of the parking space I see the same woman loading her groceries into her car. A 7 SERIES BMW (looked to be 2 or 3 years old) This is a $60,000 car. If she can afford a vehicle like this why are we supporting her family?:af: :af: something is wrong with the system

It is possible that she shops for a elderly and/or sick person that is eligible for food vouchers and can not go to the store. For that we should applaud her if not call the food assistance center and see where that takes you. There could be other people that can actually use it. There is always another side to a story.

thats all to common with the " government owes me crowd " .
years ago lots of caddilacs and lincolns parked at the welfare office daily . now it is SUVs of varying costs .

maybe she lost her job...

maybe she has just left her husband who bought her that car....

maybe she's having a medical problem and cant work??

I'm just saying, there might be more to the story.

I dont know why this is rubbing me the wrong way, but another reason could be that she is a foster parent. Foster parents recieve food stamps too feed the children that they are taking care of. For all we know she could be taking care of 5 kids who would otherwise be in a orphanage

Something I just found out about. If you take in a child from the state, ie: foster parents, or are in the process of adopting you get those wic vouchers no matter what your income. I know this as a fact. A friend of mine is a Union Plumber, they are in the process of adopting , and they get them.

Now I am not saying that this was the case here, but you never know.

All might be well and good with this one,
but......
there are some beauties out there. From reading ML's post, it sounds like maybe they have tightened up on what can, and cannot be purchased with them. A couple of years ago, the manager of the food store next to the booze store I work in, was trying to not take them from one of the section 8 moms next door.... she'd go in with the kid.... get a candy bar, give him a $20 coupon, and he'd give her the change, which she immediately bought cigs, and lottery tickets with... and.... with the 5 bucks change from that, come buy a half pint from me  he called the state, and they told him, if it's a food item, you have to take them, and give the change.

I do hope, that has been changed.

Yes very well could be. I guess I have just seen too much of this type of thing in Brockton over the years to think any differently.

Its great to see people here just sit on their butts and run their mouth.

You could have very simply reported it to the welfare office as being a concerned citizen including a description and the plate number of the car.

On the flip side I know of atleast 2 ex-dotcommers who were making big bucks then lost their pants with their investments. One was on food stamps/welfare because of "promises" made yet was driving a $40,000 automobile.

Sounds like what you are describing is WIC vouchers. If a child is eligible for MassHealth they qualify for WIC till the age of 5 regardless of income. They're only good for certain foods.

Karl F, food stamps are completely different these days. I had an ex that got them for a while. Now you get a debit card and it can only be used for food. No change given, just deducted off the card.
