View Full Version : How much gear is enough?

Ok I bet Slip on my blank thread, that I would probably win the award for owning the "least" amount of gear. I long since forced myself out of the habit of "got to have that" or "man just one more outfit" and got into the habit of only keeping a minimum selection of quality gear at my disposal. On the salt water side my only outfits are as follows.

2 - GLB841M Lami custom w/Baitrunner 3500's
1 - Cheep Wally-World 6 foot ugly stick w/6500C
1 - GW841M Lami custom w/Stradic 4000
1 - Titanium Lami 7' spinning (number somewhere) w/Stradic 4000
1 - Ditto casting 7'6" w/Calcutta 200

That's the extent of what I'd consider true striper gear and even the 7 foot Titanium spinning is way too light for anything but early and winter schoolies. Without getting into details on the freshwater side, the rest of the outfits would consist of 3/3 split of custom spinning/casting oufits. Those would all be Lami GW series custom by me, with Abu round casting and quantum 2/4 series spinning.

I'd almost guarantee I'd loose the plug count, because I can fit every plug I own in probably 3 Planno 3700 boxes. The sit in my boat neglected, except for the occassional popper being thrown once in a while. I've got 3-4 of those same boxes full of various plastic offerings, plus 2 large ziplocks full of my go to baits in my 2 usual colors.

I'd be surprised if many people have less gear.

GotStripers, this is what I have for surf fishing.

I use a 10 foot Diawa (no clue make or model numbers) that I cut down off the butt to make 9'6 with a 7500SS Penn. That is my primary Big Stick.

I have a 8'6 St. Croix Benn Dorr with a 5500SS that I use most of the time when I am fishing areas that aren't to rocky. The penn is currently in about 15 pieces as it broke on me up at the cape.
I have been using a BG series in it's place until I get a chance to get the 5500 out to penn.

Aside from that I have another no name 8ft graphite that I normally use with that BG reel. So I guess I have just 2 primary surf rods.

For my winter schoolies I use an all star rod I bought this year, it's 7ft. with a penn prion. I use it for freshwater bass when not fishing for winter schoolies.

I have a bucketfull of plugs and 2 box style carrying case full of various plugs.
I would like to get one more heavy set up, aside from that it's all I have been using.

I have a lot more freshwater rods however.

1 10' Lamiglass XS10MC conventional with an Abu 6500C3

1 10' (Custom by Eric Pederson) GSB120-1L Rod to be delivered 11/15/01 which will have my new and improved Mitchell Nautil 6500GV reel.

Assorted no-name Rods and cheapo reels.

Note- Once Ditch Jigger posts his toys we will need to go to a second page... I think he rents a warehouse to keep his Fishing Gear in. :D

Oh, then there is my Baby... My 94' Explorer with the Cooler Rack in Front. That's me in the picture. The Grin is due to the fact that the picture was taken in Montauk (Yes Bassmaster, the "Other" Mecca.)

OK - 6.5 foot stick witha a Corsiar 300 (sucks) which I never use any more

7.5' St Croix SCIII (that Clammer wants) with a Stradic 4000 because I want to be just like you GS :p (well, at least I want to heavily explore your methods)

8' Loomis SUR965 with an Abu 5500C3 - great schoolie/smaller keeper/Albie rod

9' 1088 Batson
9' 1089 Sabre (for sale $110)
10' Arra XRA1205
which are fished with: Calcutta 400 (2),6500CL Big Game, or 6500ME (2 - but I will probably sell one this winter)

Rods to build: 9' 1087 Batson for my wife, 1088 AllStar, 1088 Plum Sabre

And I have about 7 other rods that never come out to play since I found that building custom rods is easier and higher quality than 90% of the off-the-shelf rods...

The contest isn't fair, because I fish alot of different methods, species, and structure.

Sorry, I ain't a gear junky, so I don't know the blank numbers...

For the beach & blues:

11' lamiglas w/penn 8500 spin
10' st. croix w/penn 7500 spin

For the beach & bass:

9' sabre 1088 w/mag elite
8' cabelas salt striker w/penn 5500 spin
7.6' bps mh extreme w/C4 abu (schoolies)

For the boat:

7' bps extreme w/shimano stradic 4000
7' bps bionic blade w/shimano spirex 4000

And a whole bunch of freshwater bass gear and oh yeah...

A 5-6wt. cabelas flyrod for trout
A 5-6wt. l.l. bean flyrod for trout
An 8wt. bps white river flyrod for schoolies

So while I do have alot of stuff, each group serves its own purpose and I don't have a ton of stuff for any one application. Alot of it overlaps too.

I want three more outfits which will fit specific needs and hopefully, I'll be done. Time to start making out those Christmas lists.

Chris L. I've finally gotten comfortable casting Conventional with the Lami XS10MC. I love that rod!

Weren't we smart to pick it up when we did? For those un-informed, We got the Rods directly from Lamiglas on "Closeout" for a great price. Lamiglas no longer makes this factory rod and I "think" it's made on the GSB120-2L Blank.

Too true, Arby. I have to have some consideration for John's bandwidth. Newest additon to the forest is a 10' XRA 1204 that will join the Ditch household by week's end, hopefully.

Now I see these Batson "Rainshadow" blanks taking flight everywhere....and I still have one original Sabre 1088 blank in the rafters waiting for me to decided, conventional or spinning?

I'd trade a lot of that gear for two new elbows, though. Man am I hurting---thank God there's only about 6 weeks left to my season. Sometimes I wish #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& was still out there thinning the herd before they cleared Rhody and made that hard right at the Big Candle ;)

I don't know, Mike, I have an image in my head of your fishing equipment storage as the warehouse scene at the end of the movie, "Indiana Jones". :D

No amount of gear will ever satisfy an avid fisherman.

Lets see
7 foot St Croix/Calcutta 250
8 foot Sabre 967/Abu 6500C4
9 foot Lami GSH1082h/Abu Suveran
9 foot Loomis 108-30/Abu BG7000CL
9 foot sabre 1089/Abu BG6500CL
9 foot Ugly Stick/Penn650SS
10 foot Arra XRA 1205/ Chrome Abu 7500C3
10.5 foot Loomis 1266/2 / Abu BG6500CL or 6500 Mag CS
10.5 foot Breakaway1265/2/Abu 6500Mag CS
11.5 foot GSH138-2MH/ Penn850SS
Breakaway 11'9"/Abu BG6500CL

Of course that's just my "striper" rods.
I have other rods and spare reels were mentioned.

Also , I have about 20 blanks in house to be built.

Oh yeah , forgot the 10 wt fly rod and the three boat rods (2- 4/0 Penns and a BG9000CL) all of which are used for "striper fishing".

BM , I won't even get into lures. That would start out something like 1 -5 gallon bucketl of atom poppers. 300 smilin Bills assorted size , 200 3 OZ ball jigs , at least 40 Gibbs plugs , etc , etc , etc. We buy 8 inch curltails 100 at a time. Its a vicious cycle you can never have enough fishing stuff!! :)

FW , I once had a girlfriend who liked to fish with me. She expressed an interest in something for her hand and something special to wear. I put a custom made graphite rod in her hand and I dressed here in perfect fitting womans cut redball bootfoot waders.... She left me..... How was I suppose to know a diamond for her hand and a wedding dress is what she meant??!!! :)
