Congrats Dave you've made the first step!

Identify your triggers that make you WANT to smoke, ELIMINATE them for 30 days. You will feel better and 30 days is the real hurdle. Come back and tell us how you feel in 6 months.....and then a year. Cuz if you think you feel better NOW just WAIT.

I think i'm 8 years quit now last January I don't remember the years...2.5 packs a day for 18 years.....

Fishaholic...how did you do it? Gum? Patch? Cold Turkey? I'm quitting tomorrow...I've tried 3 times before, but never caught on. I'm actually sick of smoking, it doesn't give me any rush like it used to, and now it's more out of habit than anything...any more advice from anybody would be great too. They say smoking is the hardest addiction to knock...even worse than heroin.

fishaholic18
02-21-2005, 01:41 PM
Cold turkey.
It's not as bad as I thought, gets easier every day.
I still crave after I eat, so I just keep eating. LOL
The cravings after eating seem to last less every day.
The tough part for me is that my wife smokes, but she's been good enough not to smoke in front of me, that helps.
It's mostly a mental thing beleive it or not, setting your mind on quitting is half the battle.
Go for it, your lungs will feel better in just a few days.
Good Luck!

I'm trying Larry, it's not easy convincing someone to quit if they don't want to. I'm not giving up on her though, unless she gets pissed and throws me out. :laughs:

Ahhh...the "horking"! Thats the most fun part of smoking from what I can tell. I see people "horking" all the time and their solution is to have another cigarette. I sure am glad I never smoked cause it sure looks like a real pain in the ass!:smash:

When my dad quit drinking he picked up another vice......Ice Cream.

He would eat a quart a night, every night, and I'm talking w/ Hot Fudge and Whip Cream. Put on about 30 pounds and he's only about 5'3" so it showed....But after a couple of years he backed off the Ice Cream and the weight came off.

it's the mental associations you make with things that cause you to react
negatively or positively towards them... and i believe there are stop smoking tapes you can buy to change your mind set...for about ten bucks... but remember that smoke is dust....and within that dust is the nicotine,,,which by the way is an insecticide utilized by cotton growers to kill the cotton boweevil
because NOTHING else will.... power walking is better than jogging because is less traumatic to your joints.... and you don't build up carbon dioxide and fatigue yourself so readily..

Hang in there Fishaholic,

My Mom and Dad quit 1 year ago this month...My Dad had pretty much smoked non-filtered Camels for 45 years. If you can stop smoking those things anything is possible.

Is great going to their house now. No cigarette smell and the grandkids don't stink when they come home...

I quit smoking about 11 years ago and then quit Copenhagen about 2 years later... Copenhagen was much harder. :bc: :bc: :af: :af: :wall: (I did two tins a day, which is roughly the equivalent nicotine of 6 packs of smokes)

One thing I remember: After about a month or so I noticed my taste buds came back and so did smells (not always good). I also remember how nicotine kinda keeps you in a bit of a haze that you never noticed until you quit...

the reason your body craves food is because it is no longer working fulltime with all its eliminatory organs to rid the body of the INSECTICIDE nicotine
and the oral stimulation is also absent. Plus your tastebuds return to normal.

Broke my ankle in February. Three weeks into cast got a wicked chest cold. Coughed all night every 15 min like clockwork. Lungs hurt so bad thought I was gonna cough up my testicles. Stopped smoking and now it is 2 months and 1 week without a smoke. Wife goes outside and smells when she comes in. Hope she'll stop. Came out of Home Depot the other day and followed a guy who lit up all the way to his car then walked back to mine. But now I say "I choose not to smoke" and it's getting better.

Hang in there - It'll be worth it for all of us.

Wow, thats a lot of tobacky, 2 1/2 per day! A pack will last me at least 2 days, unless I'm chasing them down with beer on a weekend. I can't smoke at work, home or in my new truck.
