View Full Version : trolling with lead core
Fish Or Die 02-23-2005, 08:08 PM i have a couple of questions about lead core.this is my first time using lead core.what pound test lead core should i be using?and some people are telling me to set the drag and some are telling me not to.what should i do?i am using penn 113h with a senator trolling rod.any other tips on using lead core? thanks
Need info.
What are you trolling???
mostly lead core is for tube n wormin.
Roger 02-24-2005, 09:29 AM Basically, anything over 18# reaches the same depth because the line diameter offsets the heavier lead in the line. As such, 36 - 40 should work well on your setup with room for backing.
fishaholic18 02-24-2005, 09:33 AM I use 36#, I set drag as I normally would.
One color = 10' of depth.
Lead is only goog to around 30' of depth or so, then you need wire.
Fish Or Die 02-24-2005, 11:43 AM yes van i will be using a tube and worm
thefishingfreak 02-24-2005, 12:22 PM 45# is good. about 6 feet of 60# mono for shock tipet.ball bearing snap swivels are key.
low and slow. troll outside fawn bar from the lighthouse to the 6A can then turn arround and go back. 4 colors out in about 12 feet of water and you'll be stylin'. hold the rod 'cause lots of salad down there to foul hooks quickly.
airport flats. arround long island, lower middle, all good places for the tube and worm.
go see fishin' finatics in everet, he'll hook you up with supplies.

tattoobob 02-24-2005, 12:50 PM I was told 36 pound test is the best, If you go to fishin finatics web site
there is a whole story about trolling boston harbor from the fisherman a few years back. see you out there

tynan19 02-24-2005, 12:59 PM Try to troll really slow, under 2 knots with the tube.
fishdog13 02-24-2005, 03:19 PM /-------_____<###( THAT'S 100:laughs:
Fish Or Die 02-24-2005, 04:56 PM whats the best way to rig the lead core to the mono?barrel or direct tie to the mono?what knots are best for lead core?i usually use a palomar for everything, will it work with lead?thanks
Roger 02-24-2005, 06:49 PM Tieing knots in lead core is the same as tying with dacron. Just pull out about 12 inches of the lead core and you're left with dacron line.
I use a high quality ball bearing swivel between the leadcore and mono. A tube and worm spends the whole time spinning.
ProfessorM 02-25-2005, 12:43 PM Dacron backing to leadcore to mono leader use an Albright knot. Use a high quality ball bearing swivel in your tubes and a high quality snap swivel. P.M.
blue oyster 02-25-2005, 11:36 PM i think using a rod with a roller tip is a good idea i think it puts less strain on the line. the most important thing in my opinion is use a good quality ball bearing swivel , dont buy cheap hardware , the tube spins the whole time and if your swivel fails you will turn the line into trash real fast . i tie a spro ball bearing swivel to the lead core then attatch 5' of florocarbon leader , at the end of the floro i use a spro ball bearing snap swivel (these snaps cost over a dollar each) another thing to think about is if you are trolling the flats in say 16' of water or less you don't need to use lead core . in the shallower water i use 40# super braid with a 1oz tube and had real good luck last year .one other thing to watch out for is the lead core reeling up all in the middle of the spool . some times you have to level wind by hand i used a 113 last year this year i got a penn gt330 levelwind . good luck
pete santini 02-26-2005, 08:47 AM leadcore can be used for trolling the deadly tube and worm as well as trolling live bait such as pollock or herring. I use 36 45 or 60 lb on a 113 i would use the 60 lb . Heres what i would do 150 yds of 50 ld dacron or mono backing then take the lead out of the lead core by peeling it back with your fingers. attach the backing to the deleaded leaded with a double uni with 3 turns on each side. spool on the lead then do the same to the other end of the lead take the lead out and splice 50 floro or mono leader i do not attach the leader to the leadcore "bluefish' then put a black crosslock or ball bearing snap swivel on the end and your good to go. Spinning will only occur if you go to fast you gotta crawl baby crawl thats the speed you want to go when youre tubing. santini
tynan19 02-26-2005, 09:22 AM And use his tubes^^^^^^^^^^.
thefishingfreak 02-26-2005, 09:31 AM PFFFT.
like HE knows anything about tubes
Fish Or Die 03-03-2005, 05:12 PM another question.can i use a penn 330gti for tolling lead core?i seen that penn sells a reel i think it 49l for lead core.can i get away with using a level winder?what is the ideal rod for lead core?roller tip?what are u guys using?
thefishingfreak 03-03-2005, 05:36 PM 330 gti's are fine. 320's are a little quicker ratio, but don't hold as much lead line. it's pretty thick.
levelwinds are sweet 'cause anyone can use em:)
6-1/2' medium action boat rods are fine. you don't need a roller tip.
Fish Or Die 03-03-2005, 05:43 PM ok thanks freak
