I have a almost 4 year old Dell 4400, 1.6, P 4, 512 DDR Ram, 160 gig hard drive, Windows XP Home.

I have Comcast BroadBand

I keep losing the internet connection and the only way to get it back is to reboot?

I have NetGear 10/100 card and a Belkin Router, with 4 computers hooked up.

I have changed the wire from the computer to the router.

I have changed which plug I use in the router.

I have reloaded Windows Explorer 6

I have replaced the 10/100 card with a brand new one
of the same.

And I still keep getting booted from the net?? It is at all random times, 1 time today, 5 times yesterday, and then nothing for a day??

This has been going on for a month now??

My computer is the only one that gets booted!! No one else has this problem with theres??

Anyone have any Ideas

Dump IE and try Mozilla (Firefox or Netscape) see if you have better results.

Did you load any new software lately and what are your firewall and other protection settings at? Is there an automatic sign off setting you are missing?

macojoe

The only new stuff I did to the computer is install a new CDRW/DVD player and Nero.

But this started about a month after that??

As for Firewall I use Microsloth XP firewall and it is on??

Automatic sign off?? I have never seen one nor have I ever used one?? What would be somthing that would have one??

Thanks!!

OK I have removed all cookies, temp files, did adaware, and Microsloth spy ware, and updated Norton and did a full scan and it says I am clean.

I also have found out that when I get booted, I am still connected?? But AIM, Yahoo Messanger, and my Browser goes Down??
And I have to reboot to get anything to work??

I know this from going to start, settings, network connection, and double clicking. And it says connected and a clock is going.

macojoe, try a different port on your router....

you might also want to consider blowing away your TCP/IP settings and reinstalling them... this is only an option if you have the original setup disk....

It sounds to me that you might have a hidden TTL/MTU setting(s) that might be over riding causing your machine to dump it's ip.... I'm totally brain dead with this IT stuff ATM.... but this is a simple fix... usually happens from time to time... most companies secretly adjust your Network settings so you can't notice when they are sending info back and forth...like auto updates...

Just review your network settings and make sure that they are all the same well except for the ip...

actually.. i just re-read your last post..
make sure your router is set to DNS and that each machine is set to automaticatly obtain..... if one machine is set to say 192.168.1.100 and it's down and you have another machine set to auto it's ip might be just that....

ack i just re-read what i've posted... if you can understand what i've said then... if not just ignore it... i'll post something easier to understand when i get home from work...

stays on the net ....then that sounds like a router issue...
and that the range of ip adddress's changes so that your
PC is out of that range..... either that or its a browser setting ...time to live thang.... you could switch to trillian
to still use the aim client indirectly.... as a test...

or run something like shoutcast 24/7 with sound off to

never be idle... interesting though ....i always love a mystery

Ok I think I am getting closer to the problem??? Not that I no how to fix it :smash:

Here is what I got from the adminster tools event thing a majig

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok just got booted again, and found something else,

Your computer was not able to renew its addres from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 000000000CA8 (Ichanged the IP adress for this posting). The following error occured:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. Your compute will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

Are we getting closer??

first of all....realize that computers lie like hell and will often generate a computer message when something fails ...meaning that the message isnt necesarily accurate...

just that its encountered a problem and it auto generated a message as a response mechanism....ok... as it doesnt possess -> artificial intelligence....

but its entirely possible, that its also correct....

open your browser and type in the address window

192.168.1.1 ..........hit enter ...... and that should

get you into your router configuration screen... if prompted for a password just enter administrator
with no password....

once in ......... increase the range of IP addresses

from say 10 to 150 so that your pc always is
included.... within that group.... just a guess mind you

macojoe
03-07-2005, 11:14 AM
Ok I reset the router today, we will see if this helps??

Raven I was not sure were to increase that number?? It had something called a pool?? and it had 2 in one and 40 in the other at the end of the IP address.
Is that what you were talking about?? If it still screws up I will try it.

Thanks

Raven
03-07-2005, 11:30 AM
the point is...that if the pool isnt big enough ....see...
your ip addy ,,,, jumps outside of it.... so by expanding the size(range) of the pool ....your addy isn't squeezed out any more.

so depending on what your P'Cs ip address is and how close it is to the begining 2 or the 40 end.... may be the solution... better that your 20 and or in the middle.

Raven

router companies have help lines and are good about tech support for "their" products.... so find the pamphlet that came with your router and look for the tech support number.

an explanantion to them might further pin point your settings error.... if it (the problem)continues to occur that is....

Have you tried to use the PC without the router? Most of the router ports have auto config enabled and when they get out of sync you lose connection. Try to hardcode the port speed and duplex mode on your PC and router. Most routers are set for autonegotiate and by default XP is as well so nail those suckers up and the problem will go away :)

Most routers cannot get out of autonegotiate mode but if you nail up the PC side the router SHOULD auto negotiate to the speed you set on your pc. If the router cannot the link will not come up but I am guessing that the negotiation problem is the issue...

Remember work in layers...physical, datalink, network....

Thanks All!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I have tryed everything and still nothng?? Got rid of the router and all!!!

All except for one thing that is....... My friend who just got a computer for the frist time says did you try restoreing to a earlier time?? :smash:

So I went as far back as it would let me Feb 4th and I have not been booted since??

Its always the simple things!! :laughs:

Again thanks all!!

If you got a new 10/100 or some other internal Cable card, did you call your IP Provider and give them the MAC address so they could program that in ?

Especially if yours is the primary machine providing internet.

Also nail up the interface to 10mbs and a duplex mode of half and see if it is an autonegotiation problem. Auto neg is bad stuff for networking equipment.

Sounds to me like your firewall is preventing your ISP from pinging your system to verify you are a membre. It allows you on but every so often , say every half hour , it sends out a ping and you firewall is preventing a return response so it shuts you off as if you were not a member of their service.

We reformatted the computer and it works fine now??

I read through this whole thing and it seems a little f*ed up. I would try a static ip address, and disable the windows firewall, and just utilize the firewall on the router.

OR

Get a SWITCH or HUB and I doubt you will have any problems from that.

OR (if you cheap like me and need a solution without spending a dime)

If you get "booted #^&#^&#^&#^& next time, run the command ipconfig in prompt, if you still have an address like (192.168.1.XXX) or (10.127.1.XXX) then your network card is fine. Go to another pc in the home and try to ping your computer ( c:\ping 192.168.1.XXX(yourpcip) ) if that works, then you know the router works fine. The problem must be somewhere else.

Ill keep checking back here...
