Its good to rediscover this board after a long time!

I know how well wire line jigging works around Billingsgate and at Race Point, however I was wondering what alternative tactics work for lighter tackle. I've surfcasted for years at Race Point with sand eels, live eels, plugs etc. and am wondering if similar tactics will work from a boat.

Does anyone drift live eels or sand eels in these spots with any success? Given the success with sand eels from the beach, it seems that drifting them would work well too. If so, any particular tactics or methods? I will likely go wire as well, but would like to try some other methods.

Drifting eels and sand eels at other locations (outer beaches and MV) from a boat worked very well for me last year.

When I used to boat fish, we would drift eels at the Race and Backside. Get as close to the beach as you can, flip out 4 eels and drift out.

did you guys use any weight with the live eels? egg sinker or anything or just let them sink on their own?

No weight, or rubber-cores.

Depends on depth and current/drift. For MV, I would typically use a 3 way rig with a 4-6oz weight since the drift was fast and the depth was between 50-100 ft.

For outer beaches, we were typically drifting in 25-40 ft so a 2oz egg sinker was fine. Further south along the monomoy rips, no weight was usually needed if you dropped correctly.

Ells look most natural without weight. When I fish Hatchetts Reef in CT I use a big swivel and 7-0 Ocupuss Circle hook with 4' Floro. The big swivel and hook helps keep them down. We fish in 2-3 kts of current and the eels get down. Eels want to go one place... Down. We also found that 50lb braid helps... thinner dia...

I fish a lot in CT and 50% of my total fishing is with Eels. I plan to hit Race point more with Eels thats why I'm working on a new, faster drier ride.

One thing CT and MA have in common... Stripers LOVE Eels...

Yuh, but at the wrong tide, dogfish love eels too.
