View Full Version : Any squid at goat Island bridge? Mr. Sandman 11-13-2001, 11:13 AM if not... where are the good spots to jig up some? bloocrab 11-13-2001, 04:00 PM ..yes, there are squid and mackerel passing through there...as of Yesterday!!... ..another spot that they tend to invade and "hang out" at ..is...Point Jude ....where the charter boats are docked..;) JohnR 11-13-2001, 04:18 PM Gallilee - that's what I was thinking "Great Island Bridge" instead of "Goat Island Bridge" Mr. Sandman 11-13-2001, 04:36 PM thanks. I 'll give it a try some night. AnthonyN 11-14-2001, 10:07 PM Sakonnet Point in little compton is also a good bet. But its been slow as far as the squid fall run. Spring was great though. Here in bristol I haven't much of them at all in the past couple weeks 1 guy i talked to said that the squid fall run was over while another said it was just starting. I think in the next couple days it should heat up. I tend to trust the latter as the water temps were a bit warmer than last year this time. Once the water gets too cold they get going quick so catch them while you can!! East Tide 11-15-2001, 02:27 PM Anthony, From what I understand about stripers I don't think you are going to be seeing anymore of a "fall run" at this time of year. Even though there will still be pods of smaller fish and occasional larger fish cruising taking advantage of what bait will still frequent the warmer than average water. For the most part though the fall run is set off by the amount of light there is each day. It's something they don't learn, it's in them naturally. Like John R and some other guys can attest the big fish are hit or miss and you can usually find some resident schoolies or ones that just aren't quite with the program yet. I hate it though. I had steady action all season with good size fish, the only real difference the fall run made for me this year was smaller fish that were always there and the bigger fish being more predictable. This is just what I have learned from experience and from talking to guys who have been doing it a lot longer than I have East Tide AnthonyN 11-15-2001, 03:06 PM No doubt the fishing is pretty much done except for some bass that are staying behind usually schoolies in the warm out flows by the power plants but I think the squid will have there fall run very shortly. The reason i think that it will be soon is because i haven't seen a big push of the squid yet. It will happen this week or not at all as far as squid. I am done fishing for bass but I will try tonite for some squid. The fall run i was talking about was for squid I know the fall run of bass is over but I am gonna head out tonite for some squid. If the squid comes in like I hope they do there might be some straggler bass hanging around. East Tide 11-15-2001, 03:39 PM Ooops, Anthony I'm just jealous and bored and have had one too many cups of my lethal coffee this afternoon. I'm wicked jealous that I'm sitting here in St louis and you are going to go out squid fishing tonight and a school of 40 lb fish is going to start wacking your squid jig and you are going to have a blast while I sniff the dirty miss dreaming of stinky hands. Sorry bud, just bored. Next time I'll read the post better. Really I hope something weird happens tonight and the stripers are on your squid and you write about it so I can read about it tomorrow ;) Good luck squidding Duke 11-15-2001, 04:59 PM Try Newport Yacht Club. I used to be able to sneak in after hours. There is a spot light shinning into the water near a mast crane. The squid tend to stay on the light. I have not done this in a few years..best of luck Fishpart 11-15-2001, 05:12 PM Roccus, There should be some decent smallie fishing in the rivers not too far west of St. Louis. At least you'll be feeling the pull..... I spent a winter at Ft. Leonard Wood and there was plenty of moving water out that way (127 miles). East Tide 11-15-2001, 07:15 PM Fishpart, Talk to me goose. I have no info. Not even what weight rod or any of that stuff. I haven't done much trout fishing since my younger days, drifting worms to brookies. Did some trout thing on the cape last spring but they weren't all that smart (stocked fish). Dave Fishpart 11-16-2001, 07:18 AM I just fished some of the streams around post. Light FW tackle spinner with, 8 lb line. Drifted worms did some casting with small spinnerbaits and curltails. If you have one you might want to try around a 5 or 6wt fly rod. Sorry, not much info but it was 9 years ago. I always say a bad day of fishing is still better tan the best day of watching TV.... AnthonyN 11-16-2001, 05:08 PM No problem east I didn't say which "fall run" i was talking about so i edited my post. My fault! As for the squid they must be hiding I was hoping to catch some to eat. I dont think that there is any large stripers left here in the upper bay but i could be wrong!!! I am sure there is some schoolies still leaveing the rivers far and in between though. I think my striper fishing is done unless I see some heavy squid activity. Crafty Angler 11-16-2001, 08:04 PM Hey Ant - If you don't mind the drive (yeah, I know, that's scary to most of us RI'ers) there's bass around the Breachways and some still in Newport as of last nite. And yeah, it can be real spotty but that damn Fat Lady hasn't started YET. Crafty Angler 11-16-2001, 08:05 PM But don't wait 'cause I think she's gonna start warmin' up pretty soon. AnthonyN 11-16-2001, 11:07 PM I hear ya crafty I hit the breachway last night had some hits but the wind and surf picked up real good and i called it a night besides i didn't have eels :( Pluggin didn't come through for me. I would rather have eels at night. Plug by day sling eels by night. BTW crafty I haven't been down to newport in weeks due to the fact it was pretty dead for the last 4 weeks at least. One night I hit Fort adams front and behind eisenhower then the causeway than the beaches and castle hill ended up at sandy PT nothin there either. The only place i didn't try was ocean drive. So thast turned me off to newport for the rest of the season i should have had atleast a blue!!! SOOOO wheres the fish hiding in newport BUDDY!!!! and are they big or schoolies big blues must be making there way out. Crafty Angler 11-17-2001, 09:01 AM Ant - Reliable sources tell me there was bass between 12 and 25# locally after dark Thursday - I'm not at liberty to reveal da source or da location, but it was local. I got a dozen eels in the patio livewell and I might give it a shot after work today if I have any steam left. Good luck, give it a shot! Crafty Angler 11-17-2001, 09:05 AM Oh yeah, Anthony, don't feel like the Lone Ranger - I hit all the Breachways Thursday nite and got skunked - almost literally, too to add insult to injury. Saw one of the biggest striped kitties in a long time at Quonny - I hear they get mad if ya step on 'em with korkers. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
