When buying new lures theycome in so many colors I don't know which would be better for catching bass. Some guys say stripers and blues have preference to certain colors. But everyone I ask has there own colors different from the next guys.

As a rule of thumb i stick with light colors during the day and dark colors during the night except when jiggin they bass love white jigs and grubs or when the moon is bright.

One guy i talked to down the breachway said that the blues love banana and red colors and the stripers like the white and blue colors.

So i guess the point of this is that i don't have as much money as i used too and i would like to buy the right color plugs.

In the past Color really didn't matter just light and dark that was it. But after talking to people it might matter after all.

Buy one of each color and test yourself. MAke one cast with each color, and the color that catches the fish is the one!!! Just kidding.

I've often wondered how much a difference it makes, and how a specific color is "tested" to be better than another. Is it possible to do a conclusive test in fishing? I'm figuring you have 2 anglers fishing side by side, same everything except lure color. They would have to simultaneously cast into the same spot in order to see which color the fish wanted in order for a true test, right? Theyd also have to retrieve it exactly the same way.

A one-man testing machine is also impossible to me. Maybe the fish weren't around when you were casting the first lure color, then moved in at teh same time as you switched. Maybe he changed his retrieve a litle and that turned the fish on.

I love a pretty paint job, (especially gay pink which BM has cornered the market on) - but I feel confidence in what you're throwing has more to do with it than anything else.

Bone... well, I guess I could keep going on and on as there are SO many different things, then when you start adding different teasers and single bucktail hooks to plugs instead of the rear trebble... just goes on and on... This may be a time when building plugs over the winter becomes more economical come summertime. But you can still only take so many with you if you're on your feet and not sledding the beach....

When you consider the rather drab color most of our local bait fish come in and factor in the often murky our local waters can be, I don't think color per se is what turns on fish. Especially night feeders like bass.

What I do think is that color translates into shades of light and dark. What may look like say orange over white or green over yellow to us appears as various shades of dark over light to the fish. Given the conditions one shade may be more visible than an other or look more natural than another. But to say the fish were really turned on to orange or chartreuse or yellow or hot pink I don't think is totally accurate.

Then again, it has been shown that sharks prefer bright colors over dark colors even though no natural food is bright yellow or orange. So what do I know. :cool:

Right on Jaiem! My own feelings are that size and action is far more important than colors. Those pretty paint jobs catch more fisherman than bass (sorry BM) but that is MHO.
