Interesting read, and very nice to see a publication finally bring some of the concerns into light of day. The experts quoted, still like to dismiss the fact that seals target bass, but there si a picture in there of a half eaten bass, hanging on an anglers line. They would need a 100K they say to prove it... well, they should just go fishing, if they don't believe the "common" angler.
Nice to see some of the tackle shop guys quoted as well.

seals are best shark bait and chum there is japanese longliners have been known to use seal meat for their longlines Look for plenty more big shark sighting along our coast as their favorite food supply increases.

I saw that OTW said there once was a time when there was a bounty on them. $5 for each nose you brought in.

Alas, the fun ended in 1962.

I actually duck hunted with an ole timer (who has since passed away) who told me about seal hunting in MA. He said that the buggers sink like rocks - that from a boat, you'd have to shoot them and then harpoon them before they sank. He also swore that they'd eat downed ducks if you didn't retrieve them quick enough (although I've never experienced that yet). He also told me about the bounty he used to collect!

Something has got to be done.....My brother lives in Idaho and the analogy to the wolves is right on.

All I can say is if any seal comes near my new #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& needlefish....well....that will be self-defense! :devil2:

I was a amazed last winter/spring/summer when I was doing some work in Chatham Harbor/Pleasant Bay and the sheer number of seals on the shoals inside the harbor was amazing, especially in contrast to RI where you see a handful at best during the fall run....

Greg Skomal did a very interesting talk at the MSBA Show on the white shark in local waters last fall. He had some interesting observations/pictures of suspected white shark bites on seals . . . he is very interested in hearing any first hand accounts from folks like us that may see something out there.
