The theme to my new semiar series this year is "Understanding Fish and How to Catch Them".

In order to help you learn more about the realm of the striped bass and many other marine game fish I offer you this cool site:
Discovery of Estuarine Environments http://omp.gso.uri.edu/doee.htm

You might recognize some of my handywork in the virtual field trip section. Check out the slide show and you'll see some fine examples of prey items -- great for you fly fishers trying to match the hatch.

AnthonyN,

You would be amazed at what lives in our bay system...that's what makes this kind of site so interesting.

Clamdigger,

Gary wants me to take a couple of photos of it on Sunday -- a great boat -- all tricked out for fishing.

I have four videos out now:
Striper Magic
Stripers in Paradise
Surf Fishing and Distance Casting with Ron Arra
Secrets of the Striper Pros

So what's the personal differences you have with these two spots?

Mike,

You do an absolutely fantastic job and produce some of the most educationally entertaining videos I have ever seen on this sport. In a unique perspective that every fishermen has thought about but few have seen.

Everyone I show them to are amazed.

I grew up on the water around fishing, boats, beaches and surf fishing for bass a lot. I came across one of your striper videos in a tackle store and picked it up on a whim a few years ago after moving to RI. I kept saying...how good could it be? The visibility around the coastal northeast has always been pretty poor for diving (compared to Hawaii or the Caribbean islands) After seeing the first one I immediately ordered the others.

Last week I walked into the TV room and I found my kids (who like to fish too) watching striper magic...My youngest said it is like watching "sponge bob square pants” for real! (A silly kids cartoon about undersea life) Consider that a compliment from a 5 year old.

Great job! My only suggestion is go DVD instead of videotape.

Mr. Sandman,

Thank you for your kind words regarding my videos. I have always strived to combine entertaining images with useful, solid, how to information. Another goal has been to produce a body of work that the whole family would enjoy -- hearing how your young son was fascinated with the video is one of the greatest compliments I could hope for. The other compliment that I love to hear is, “Mike, I’ve watched your video 100 times. I’m not kidding, I’ve watched that tape 100 times!” This quote came from an excited fan and his wife, “The Pogie Princess.”

I'm working on several new videos for release over the next few months. I'm able to deliver these as DVD's but won't do so until late 2002.

I spent 4 days on Cuttyhunk with Lefty Kreh this past June. I directed an Emmy award winning camera/sound crew and matched Lefty up with two accomplished local guides...the end result will be two fantastic videos that look at: reading the water, fly/lure selection, how to animate your offering, where to find fish, when to fish specific structure, how to connect with larger fish, and a whole lot of underwater video of schooling bass and solitary cows. These videos will use stripers as “generic” fish that represent “all fish” and therefore will focus on tips and techniques that will work most species of marine game fish. Add to the mix Lefty's outstanding personality and I'm sure these tapes will go on to become classics. My goal with these two productions is simple –produce the best fishing video ever made -- time will tell.

I read a number of your posts with envy. Although I spent over a week on Cuttyhunk this fall, I was on-island a week after your most successful visit. Although the full moon made for fabulous midnight photos by the legendary Cuttyhunk Club...the bass had lockjaw. Here's a look at the full moon in October and the very special waters that ebb and flow in front of this historic club.

I look forward to these coming videos! I can't image diving around Pigs and Sows...or the channel on the east side, the current can become insane (at one point it had to be ripping 7 knots+ thru the channel) and slack water doesn't last very long. But the underwater structure must be awesome to see. I was telling a fellow fishermen on the island I would love to see this place with all the water drained for a day just to see what structure is really like down there! Please post something here when your videos are available.

I am surprised to hear the fish were not that active the week after I was there. There was a pretty nasty weather system that blew thru there during my visit and could have messed things up for a few days. I know there were nice fish caught the week prior to my visit. At times, the action was quite outstanding and other times when you had to work a little, but there were plenty of fish around that place. It was one of the best surfcasting experiences of the year for me. I am already looking forward to fishing that place next season. (Have 3 trips penciled in) Truly one of the better sweet spots for bass and other fish as well, no doubt.

Good luck with your video-production efforts.

Good Luck with the new Videos Mike. Underwater Photography is cool. I liked to dive and its nice to be able to sit back and enjoy the underwater stuff without having to put on a wet suit.

..Mike...quite a few of those pics. look like Aquarium environments...were they all actual " Ocean " shots ?? or some aquarium ones mixed in...:)..

..Great shots either way!!..

..some people may not have noticed but, has anyone ever looked down a squids throat??...I'm referring to the " Parrot Beak " :D:D..looks like it could do some damage if it latched on to ya! ;)

..a quick question about the sennets...early this summer, I encountered some fish similar to the "sennet" ...but these fish had teeth like a Barracuda...( a lot smaller in scale..these fish were no longer than 4"..)..but the size of the teeth amazed me!!..could they have been sennets or something else?..

Bloo, Mike didn't take those in the aquarium. I believe Kenny Abrahms did.

Those auarium shots were from Kenny, he had some similar ones during his show - which is also excellent.

Mike & Kenny really go after what the bait looks like and both have very impressive shows. Mike, what I like most about your videos is that they show an INCREDIBLE DISPLAY of what happens under the surface...

I'm looking forward to seeiong those new videos too....
