View Full Version : Just Returned from the RISSA Show
Steve K 04-01-2005, 02:54 PM I enjoyed the show but I only had an hour and a half worth of time to spend there. Captn Don's booth was a zoo with people going after the Hab's and Bernzy plugs. Not many left at 1:30. Did not like the non-fishing booths like Gutter Helmet and Sears. What is up with having booths like that there? Overall, well run and organized show with plenty of room in the aisles. :kewl:
reelecstasy 04-01-2005, 03:03 PM Did not like the non-fishing booths like Gutter Helmet and Sears. What is up with having booths like that there?
It wasn't put on by Mass. Striped Bass Assn. :hihi:
BigFish 04-01-2005, 04:01 PM Gutter Helmet and Sears??? Glad I will miss the show in that case......I want to buy gutters or go to Sears I can do that anytime! ;)
Why don't they have fishing tackle at Home Shows?
The Dad Fisherman 04-01-2005, 04:13 PM Why don't they have fishing tackle at Home Shows?
Funny you should mention that, I was talking to my Bro-in-law the other day he said he was at the Home show a couple of weeks back and they had a raffle for Fishing lures....said he thought of me when he saw it so he put some tickets in for it......I thought that was an odd place for fishing tackle when he mentioned it
BigFish 04-01-2005, 04:16 PM Whats good for the goose...as hey say!
Striperhound 04-01-2005, 04:31 PM Show was good, early bird got the habs! Capt Dons booth was a joke early. Habs and Tattoo's booth was nice, some new paints John has are out of this world. Really no deals to be had, full retail and then some.
Thanks Warren
Saltheart 04-01-2005, 04:33 PM Tha's gonna turn people off fast. next it will be Cell phone , long distance service and timeshare condo's there. Same thing happened to the Worcester show starting about 7 years ago.
kippy 04-01-2005, 05:01 PM Tha's gonna turn people off fast. next it will be Cell phone , long distance service and timeshare condo's there. Same thing happened to the Worcester show starting about 7 years ago.
There was a raffle at the Providence boat show for timeshare condos..what a joke. :yak6:
Tha's gonna turn people off fast. next it will be Cell phone , long distance service and timeshare condo's there. Same thing happened to the Worcester show starting about 7 years ago.
there was a booth for Verizon DSL :hs:
i thought the show was great. i saw the gutters, and other crap and kept on walkin ;)
TheRattBoy 04-01-2005, 05:54 PM Just got back from the show, we were THE FIRST ones in the door and I was the FIRST one at Capt. Don's booth....got everything I was after Hab's , Hab-a-Tat and Bernzy pluggage, oh yeah, venison too, wicked good :kewl: ...Hey, we even got to talk with the Govenor, whoever he was  .
Got some Bugger wood and J.P. got a free t-shirt, with the secret handshake :laughs:
It was a GREAT show, you can tell a lot of work goes into it, all you RISSA guys should be proud :claps: Yeah, I saw the gutters too, big deal
Now bring on the fish :kewl: :smokin: johnny
Peter Lajoie 04-01-2005, 06:13 PM Got into the show around 930 am ;) scored allot of habs and tattoo plugs, aquaskinz stuff, a new wader belt and other things, also met allot of great people there too and ran into allot of people that I have fished with, it was a good time...The bar was a nice touch too :gu:
Navy Chief 04-01-2005, 06:53 PM Got to the show when they opened the doors, was about 15 people back.
Dropped $200 in about a half hour. Finally got some Habs needles, 8 of them actually. Bought one of #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&s Squids and got a T-shirt with the secret handshake. Got home, ordered 2 more habs from Joe Lyons. Total cost of todays purchases $250 and change. It's good to be single :kewl: Spent no money at the Gutter Helmet booth.
Missed the bar though, very sad. :gu:
Finally met the famous Mustache man himself. Hey Habs, when the stripers show up at the War College, I'll take you out there (just brings squids).
Slipknot 04-01-2005, 07:57 PM I just got back myself. Lots of booths there and plenty of fishing stuff. It was weird to see the oddball booths there but it was no big deal, just walk right past them, nope, don't need a mortgage. I wanted to trade plugs to the gutter helmut guy for gutters for my addition, he wasn't biting.
We stayed long enough to see the Hab and Tat girls at Habs and Tattoo's booths. Had a few laughs with Charlie Cinto, what a character he is. Saw many familiar faces. I didn't see Eben though :( Fun afternoon :kewl:
OhI forgot, Peter, I saw the needle you made in the Aquaskinz booth - nice, looked like birch.
ah slip i would have loved to have seen you.. I have a phil lesh CD i burned for U, and could have brought it up... oh welll... i'll give it to you at one of the Legs..... :D
Slipknot 04-01-2005, 09:22 PM send it with your plugs to canalman, he'll get it to me :D

RI Popper 04-01-2005, 10:05 PM It wasn't put on by Mass. Striped Bass Assn. :hihi:
Your Right, a lot of people at this one :smash: Besides it's proof that you can't please everyone no matter how hard you try. Hope you enjoyed the forum anyway.
Armand

Jetty Hopper 04-01-2005, 10:49 PM How's the parking at the show? Is there parking on the street? Can a Chevy Tahoe fit in the parking garage? What's the fee?
Alot of faces and great people and more tackle than any of the other shows. Some of the rows had as much as five tackle shops. Hopes it stays that way.
And yes the venison was good Thanks John
How's the parking at the show? Is there parking on the street? Can a Chevy Tahoe fit in the parking garage? What's the fee?
$10 for my van at the lot next to the show, i'd say the same for the Tahoe. $7 for a regular vehicle
Clammer 04-01-2005, 11:44 PM $8 bucks for all day in the attached parking garage /// :hs:
BasicPatrick 04-01-2005, 11:44 PM Guys,
I just got back from the show manning the MSBA Booth. I thought it was the best of the large type shows i have seen in a long time. Yes there were filler booths and some empties, but that is how you put on the big shows in todays market. All in all it was smoothly run and a good job by the guys from RISAA.
I am the guy at the head of the MSBA show and the two are just different. I think RISAA did about as good a job putting on a large show as can be done in todays world. The MSBA show is more of a fishing event or gathering than a show. both have their own plus and minus points but hey, we can all attend both.
It was good seeing everyone all day. A friend from another part of my life ended up working a booth for a new charter boat and finally came to see me about 6pm. He was amazed that I seemed to be talking to people all day, but that is how many people I knew that went through. Definately a good time.
Striperhound 04-02-2005, 06:47 AM I parked in Providence Place mall walk across the sky bridge and through the westin to the show. Usually you have to validate the parking ticket to get a reduced rate. They still only charged me $1 for 3 hours.
I hung out with Habs and Tattoo, Point Jude Joe and Pete from the Saltwater Edge, I bought a cool print of off Crafty - at the Anglers Art booth....
Habs and Tattoo had two spokesmodels handing out flyers - they did not speak much nor they did not know anything about fishing. Nobody seemed to mind....More importantly, they looked like they did not know anything about fishing.....
Clogston29 04-02-2005, 08:45 AM Joe, I was hoping to get a chance to meet you at the show but I just missed you at the Habs/Tattoo both. The "TAT" t-shirt was pretty amusing. I looked for the angler's art booth and couldn't find it. I just bought a condo and need some decorations. I bought a print that I really like from Benjamin McCormick. I may need to place an order from Crafty. I finally scored a herring spook and lime over yellow habs 2 oz needle, I'm ready for spring now.
snake slinger 04-02-2005, 01:00 PM just got home from the show.i had a good time got to meet charly cinto and look at his huge fish.and how about the habatat girls.whent over to the quaker lane booth and got some habs needles thanks steve.got to talk to seawolf .then i pick up a salty bugger plug.it was cool seeing the old pics at the gibbs booth.pretty good show .snake
Saltheart 04-02-2005, 02:22 PM We went today and it was a good show. Didn't really notice the iodd things like a big Candy seller about 6 booths long. There was tons of fishing stuff and lots of boats. Spent money , saw friends and had fun.
In The Surf 04-02-2005, 03:24 PM HAD A GREAT TIME
Janette and I had a great time at the show yesterday! Good to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones. Got some great shtuff! A speacial thanks to John (Habs), Mike (Tattoo) and Dom, had a great time hanging at your booth. Now she really wants to get the pass and go to the Cape. Was great meeting Charlie and seeing the fish! Met Kadir, got to see Crafty and the Mrs, the Point Jude brothers, Pete from SWE, and Iron Mike again. Also got to see my bud Joe outside the house (only kidding Joe). Clammer, Janette said it was great seeing you again and beleive me she and I would both like to see me back to work Soooon! Great show even with a couple of out of place booths, worth the price of admission.
Fishpart 04-02-2005, 04:09 PM Good, show, I had my hands full with my little traveling show...Those HAB TAT lures sure were nice :heybaby:
Good to see DonM, Mako Mike, missed Afterhours, Sokey and Saltheart, Kadir the boys love their hats THANKS ...
fishweewee 04-02-2005, 08:36 PM WOW!
Consensus amongst the people I was talking to was that it is probably one of the best shows ever put on. At least in the Northeast.
Attendance was pretty darn good Saturday afternoon ... I bumped into a bunch of folks - Victor, Nils, Don M, Kadir, Surfpirate, Fish_Eye, Flaptail, Tattoo, Habs, Fishpart & sons, and a few others.
Don Michaud, Nils, Kadir, DZ, #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&, Mako Mike, and Corey of Saltwater Edge looked pretty darn busy manning their booths. Frantic at times it seems, particularly after the noon rush. I'm wondering if these guys will ever admit to being "showed out" by now!
Habs & Tattoo - gotta hand it to you, those two ladies were a hit! :heybaby:
I'm sure the rainy weather really helped attendance.
Good show. Lots of good vendors with stuff to sell. Ample parking, and very convenient access to the shopping mall for the attached significant others who did not want to be stuck browing fishing stuff for hours on end. Lots of diversions for after the show.
Was rather intrigued to see a LOT of new custom wooden plugs whose makers I have not yet heard of. All I can say is, wow.
-WW
basswipe 04-02-2005, 09:07 PM My girl and I got there for opening and left at 12:30 when I couldn't take my hunger anymore and plus the fact that I spent all my cash and really didn't want to increase my credit card debt any higher than it already is.
Walked out with half dozen plugs and a #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& Tshirt after showing a rather lame secret S-B.Com handshake. Thanks for the shirt Salty. :D Also left with more literature than I could carry.
Met a some of you all for the first time.Ran into a few I've met before.
All in all a damn fine show.
lurch 04-02-2005, 09:17 PM I got there around 10:30 and saw tons of habs lures at a booth that no one was at. You may have seen me as I was the tall guy with the kid on my shoulders and the guy who was giving his son a time out :af:.
The amount of people at the show was CRAZY!! If you stopped for a moment you caused a traffic jam. I agree with folks here that it was a great show i will admit that this show was better than the Mass bass show only because the number of booths.
I could not believe the number of dealers selling Tica and Tsunami rods and reels. My buddy was lookng for a meat dunking rod but by the time we started looking for a rod the kids had meltdowns...we had a great time with the kids but it was just too much for them.
tynan19 04-02-2005, 11:03 PM Well I just got home now. I spent more on :gu: than I did on fishing supplies. Great time seeing everyone. Gloucester2 I see you every where. JBuck and PTJudeJoe keep up the great work. Tony well........., Chris tough job you had today. Don(afterhours) those lanyards worked well. I saw Scott and JohnR having a meeting of the minds. Scott thanks. TT good seeing you. Mako Mike was busy.
I did not see any girls at the Hab-a-Tat booth. But I think I saw them walking around. :bshake:
JohnR 04-03-2005, 01:35 AM I did not see any girls at the Hab-a-Tat booth. But I think I saw them walking around. :bshake:
You just had to look for Habs Jr. He and Nick were followdrooling the Hab-A-Tat girls around like they had a bone tied to their tails :bshake:
Nice show, well done, nout much for the gutter helmet stuff either but some of the non fishing vendors were probably club members as well... Liked that Silverhawk 24.
Didn't buy ANYTHING, was great :hihi:
Striperhound 04-03-2005, 06:38 AM Fishweewee hit it on the head. I was surprised too at the new custom plug builders with booths that no one has heard of. Funny how the custom plug price point starts at $20. I think Im getting a booth next year
365 days till next years show give or take
turn 20 plugs a day
$20 a pop at the show
$146,000 before expenses.
I may just quit my day job.
RI Popper 04-03-2005, 07:20 AM [QUOTE=Striperhound]Funny how the custom plug price point starts at $20. I think Im getting a booth next year ...
WOW, $20.00 each, Must have missed a few booths. I saw custom wood starting at $7.00 :rollem: must just be looking in wrong places.
Armand
fishweewee 04-03-2005, 07:48 AM On a side note, I have to say Providence looked GREAT.
Last time I got a chance to stroll around the town was back in the mid-80's when I was looking at colleges. The place as I remember it was a run-down pit, at least compared to Boston.
I am amazed at how much the town has changed over 20 years - on the surface. Lots more to do there today besides crashing Brown parties.

and after expenses that 146,000 becomes 10,000... :laugha:
Starfish 04-03-2005, 12:09 PM I had a great time...(thank god there was a bar!) But really for only its 2nd year that show has really taken off...thanks chris and t.o. for making it a little bit more fun ;) Great job to all!
p.s. Clammer I didn't wear stilettos! I had sneakers on!
ThrowingTimber 04-03-2005, 01:18 PM Wee wee if you get a booth next year let me know... I'll get my great aunt a lathe and duplicator... I'll drop it off at the old folks home and I'll ask that they extend their arts and crafts hour to 15 hours a day.. :hihi:
macojoe 04-03-2005, 01:20 PM I was on my way there and stopped by MikeCC first.
Well to make a long story short, I had a better time hanging there for a couple of hours then going to that big crowded show!!! :rotf3:
Thanks Mike

Yah got that right!!! I had lots O fun hanging drywall today :rollem: , couldnt make the shop. Went to the show Friday, thought it was good but what it wasnt was MassBass, that show got good MoJo.
Striperhound 04-03-2005, 06:16 PM I did see plenty of custom wood for less than $20 but the starting point still seems to be a 20 spot in most cases. The new builder from Barrington RI Afterhours custom plugs was $20 north. Im not complaining, I purchased one of his plugs, looks great.
fishweewee 04-03-2005, 06:52 PM Wee wee if you get a booth next year let me know... I'll get my great aunt a lathe and duplicator... I'll drop it off at the old folks home and I'll ask that they extend their arts and crafts hour to 15 hours a day.. :hihi:
Ok dude. But I'll let you crack the whip, I'm not getting involved in the management aspect of things. :hihi:
We'll get two grannies to run around in skimpy bikinis to hawk our wares. :heybaby:
anyone see those sweet surf hog plugs made in south county RI??:hihi: :hidin:

Joe I was in the shop Saturday with my father. Had wireline put on the Penn senator. :wavey:
Went to the show today..didnt have much time to browse as I got there at 2:30. All in all, great job by RISAA. :claps:

PurpelNoon 04-03-2005, 09:21 PM :kewl:
providence has some of the best thai, japanese, indian food i have ever had
PurpelNoon 04-03-2005, 09:28 PM Darn, I must have been in the wrong part of town. :(
Darn, I must have been in the wrong part of town. :(
i think so... pvd is known as one of the best eating cities in the country. Behind the obvious (NYC, San Fran, etc...), of course, but still, highly regarded.
i will say that many of the better places for food are not directly around the convention center. you have to go up to the east side, or to the outskirts for the really yummy stuff.
tynan19 04-03-2005, 10:09 PM sure.. next winter when i make the next batch :hihi:
Send you pictures? :eyes:
:rotfl:
depends on how good the pictures are... i might have to dip into my personal stocks :D
Clammer 04-03-2005, 10:19 PM What the @#$%^
tynan19 04-03-2005, 10:22 PM Clammer you already got some.
Eben thanks for posting that pic of the Vase, know she wants one. :whackin:
I make starfish too
flatts1 04-03-2005, 10:26 PM I went today for a little while. Not too crowded. Found free streetside parking nearby (score!). Found a $2 discount coupon on the ground (score!) Got some awesome Jerky at a good price, some custom freshwater spinners that I probably payed too much for (but would never find anywhere else), and some killer freshwater rubber from the Worm Barn.
Impressed to say the least. Just wish I could have stayed long enough to catch a seminar or 2.
Just kept walking by the gutter helmet, Verizon, Skoal, Mortgages, cars, etc..
Mike
tynan19 04-03-2005, 10:26 PM Her birthday is coming up, I will be in touch.
MakoMike 04-04-2005, 06:48 AM Just wanted to add that it was great to see everyone that stopped by the Nor'east booth. It sure was busy, so much so that we ran out of magazines to give away by about 1PM on Sunday. We never expected to see crowds like we had on Saturday. I got to walk around and talk to a lot of the exhibitors that I know on Sundy and they all said that they had a great show and will be back next year.
reelecstasy 04-04-2005, 07:48 AM All in all I thought it was a great show. The RISAA guys did a great job and the show seemed very well planned out. As far as the filler, well you are gonna get them when you have a show this big. I was impressed with all the volunteer's they had, MSBA members should take note. I didn't drop a dime, except for a few libations, which would have been avoided if I wasn't influenced by a crowd of S-B er's... :rollem: :D
I had a great time, even though I was working :laugha: (tynan19)
It was great running into T.Orlando, Tynan19, and of course the much better half- Starfish these guys seem to get me all fired up... Also ran into many more, Throwingtimber, Zacs, the big man JohnR, the AquaSkinz guyz (I did say it was very well made :hihi: #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&, and so many more.....
The show was great, but for me it didn't have the vibe of the MSBA show, but I am biased :hee:
Thanx to Afterhours bigtime, it's gonna slay :kewl:
piemma 04-04-2005, 08:13 AM Went Sat and had a GREAT time. Good price on Sluggos and a great price on a single row surf bag by BW. $24.50 and it looks just like the AquaSkins bag. Probably won't last as long but at about 1/4 the price I can buy 1 a year for 3 years and still be ahead of the game.
Thanks to Throwing Timber for a great looking plug. I now owe you one. met a bunch of the guys from the board and was happy to find out that most don't consider me a "spot burner" for my Herring post.
RIrockhound, being a licensed captain, knowns more people than you can ever imagine. If everyone he knows gave him one plug he could open a tackle shop. :bgi:
I too bought one of those BW surf bags. Could not justify the $$ for the aquaskinz bag.
spence 04-04-2005, 08:18 AM Went Sat and had a GREAT time. Good price on Sluggos and a great price on a single row surf bag by BW. $24.50 and it looks just like the AquaSkins bag. Probably won't last as long but at about 1/4 the price I can buy 1 a year for 3 years and still be ahead of the game.
Paul, do you have any idea how expensive velcro is these days ???
One spill and your plugs are going to shoot out of that bag like little mortar rounds :as:
-spence
TheRattBoy 04-04-2005, 08:22 AM If you got 20-30 dollar plugs in the bag , I can easily justify the price... :) johnny
ThrowingTimber 04-04-2005, 08:29 AM Paul,
I have the same style bag. Got to the fabric store and get a $1.49 plastic buckle and a yard of nylon webbing $2.50 a yard. (if you get yourself 2 buckles you can fashion yourself a fish leash as well) sew in 2 inches of webbing at the top of the bag in a square then an x pattern. attached and sew one half the buckle. Repeat the same for the other end of the buckle. I placed the second part just over the small pocket in the front of the bag. The small clip can be opened and closed with one hand in the surf no problem. And also save yourself some aggrevation and cut the mesh off the side of the bag.
my bag actually held up quite well by rinsing it every dozen or so trips with hodegman wader wash.
piemma 04-04-2005, 08:46 AM Hey Guys:
My bag has the SNAP buckle just like the Aquaskin bag
PurpelNoon 04-04-2005, 08:55 AM I have a BW Sports Hip Pack. Nice and roomy for large plugs, but the buckle with no velcro is a real pain to close in the surf. Also, when you store bucktails in the sleeves, when you open the top, the bucktails fly out into the water. My other bags dont do that.
choggieman 04-04-2005, 09:18 AM I was at the show on Saturday morning, bright and early. Had a chat with Habs and Tattoo- talk about two down to earth good guys. Their plugs were beautifully displayed and the add for the new goo goo was awesome. Best part about those guys is the ability to make some of the most sought after plugs on the market and still be humble. Both of them outdid themselves with that goo goo.I troll old coopers and am ready to toss all my old ones in favor of the newest habatats. Met Charlie Cinto and was truly impressed.
I am too amazed at the number of plug makers and some of the lures were pretty but have a lot to prove before I shell out the bucks for them.
Talked to Pete and the rest of the guys at swe, especially the custom rod builder, Dave Fontaine. Had some beautiful rods that really show off his unparalled workmanship. Talk about attention to detail! I will be saving my pennies for a couple of customs from him!
All in all a great show, the best in the area!
Gloucester2 04-04-2005, 01:41 PM Gloucester2 I see you every where.
I wasn't there
Saw you at MSBA - but we got interupted when you stopped Bigfish to 'Ho a plug . . . Starfish was on the cellphone :call:
We'll catch up soon :wavey:
tynan19 04-04-2005, 02:02 PM My bad I thought I saw you.

Crafty Angler 04-04-2005, 07:20 PM Thanks for all the kind words - it's been a real long Monday trying to get everything unpacked and back in place.
It was good to see all the Usual Suspects from S-B - thanks for stopping by The Angler's Art booth - me and Mrs Crafty couldn't have been more pleased with the show from our perspective as vendors. Our very first sale of the show was to Governor Carcieri who came by after the ribbon cutting and bought a framed 16x20 'Gamefish of the Rhode Island Surf' print - we thought it was a good omen and we ended up having a great weekend. Even though we got onboard with the booth a little later than most and were near the outskirts we were amazed at the traffic thru our booth! The RISAA guys did a great organizational job - it was our first show with the new business and we couldn't have been happier.
My only regret was that I wasn't able to visit the other vendors I wanted to stop by and say hi and talk to because we got so busy -
Anyway...Don and Janette, thanks again for the coffee, Clamma, we'll get together 'when the buds on the trees are as big as a thumbnail' ;) - DonM, good to see ya, my friend - Slip, wish we coulda talked longer, after hearing about the fees on the Cape  I'll never bitch about Newport sticker and pass fees again...Joe, I'll give ya a call - and JohnR, just give us a shout when you get a chance in regards to that thingy :) - and again, thanks to everyone who stopped by!
It was good to see you all - now that the heat is off a little we can get back to normal...
Although back to normal for Mrs Crafty is a lot shorter trip than it is for me :rotf3:

ahhhhhhhhh trout-togging. the finist of gentleman's sports, when the fish understand the pressures put on a vermouth drinking angler.. I would elaborate on the finer details of this small but sporting fishery but i have been sworn to secrecy :faga:
basswipe 04-07-2005, 05:29 AM I too have taken the oath.

Fishpart 04-07-2005, 07:24 AM WOW, I think I missed as many booths as I saw  Guess that is what happens when you want to make sure that you go home with the same number of children you arrived with.........All they wanted to do was climb on boats.....
