@HOME, which provides all of the network infrastructure for COX in New England (but not the cable itself) much of AT&T Broadband (and the companies they bought out) in New England filed for bankruptcy protection in Septermber and have received permission to pull the plug on most/all services as of tonight. It might happen tonight, or it may be in a few days.

You may still have some services but will probably loose e-mail and DNS and 50/50 you'll lose everything all together (with the possible exception of bare IP initially ) unless your cable provider has a backup plan (all of COX does not  :( )... What service may or may not be still available is all based on less than accurate info from what I've been able to pull off a few different sites, maily DSLReports...

If you are lucky enough only to lose e-mail, call me this weekend (not tonight) on my cell phone 617-512-2541 and I'll create an e-mail address for you @striped-bass.com so you can access e-mail via Outlook Express or via WebMAIL... We'll see how things work out in the next 24 hours and if some things work and some things don't, I'll put up all of the steps to get your e-mail & DNS through my server... If basic IP goes down the tubes, we're S.O.L...

My e-mail server has nothing to do with COX or @HOME nor does anything that this site uses (anymore, snicker, snicker, snicker)

Here is COX's statement from yesterday: http://www.cox.com/info/

John -

Hmmm, I saw a report of this this AM on the news, but I'm still a little unclear on it.

I've got a Cox@Home cable connection and my understanding was that Cox@Home wouldn't be disrupted - is that the case?

Thanks for any info -

Okay, followed your link and it sorta appears that Cox Cable IS going down the chute -

This would not be a good thing.

Its not Cox itself its Excite , a company who provides the internet connection for Cox. Cox is suppose to be setting up their own but now Excite is shutting down sooner than anticipated so we may get stuck for a while til Cox gets there own stuff going. They have a deal with Net Zero whereby we can get free dial up service in the meantime but that would mean a need for a dial up modem and setting it all up for a short time. If I lose it at home for a while I'll still have net access from work.

And BTW , I'm on now and there were rumors of a 3AM shutdown. We'll see.

We just now got a call from Cox saying that it doesn't look good. Y'all better back up and prepare to be internet-less if you have Cox @HOME--like I do, dammit.

I am a heavy user of cox@home. I work from home and rely on it for almost continously. I have had it 2.2 years in RI and so far so good. I have had dinner with a VP from Cox a few months ago. Everyone knew @home was going under. Cox never was crazy with @home set up but Cox did not have the networking systems and people to support a buildout. Cox was laying fiber in the ground not worring about webpage and email junk. For the last year they have been taking over more and more of the duties of @home, I know for a fact that buy June of 01 they had planded to be free of @home and have everything inhouse. They have accelerated the sched but it will still be a couple months before they can do everthing @home was doing. I expect that there might be a minor intrup here and ther but I doubt you loose everthing for very long. I know they are trying to buy time and they should have no problem doing this.
You all know the reasons(from what I heard).......Bondholders don't like it when the price of a company's stock X the number of outstanding shares drops below the amount of the cash that was loaned to them. (They were hoping to get their money back and just saw the company become worth less then what they are owed.) So they sued and said they think the company should auction off all the assets, but only ATT bid....not much of an auction...The bondholders want COX and COMCAST and maybe someone else to pony up some cash or they will pull the plug on customers (ATT already owns 42% of @home) and offered 307 mill for the rest. (The bondholders put up about 770 mil in 1998 to @home and they plan to squeeeeze the other cable compaines to get more cash.

What will I think will happen?..... Cox is strong, and will work a temp deal with the bondholders to keep things going until they get there own system up. Bondholders just want cash and cox has enought to buy some time. I know cox never liked @home but I never seemed to have a problem with them.

My biggest worry is switching 500K COX customers to a new and rushed-to-compleation network. You know there is going to be a few problems. Cox has a very solid infastructure and will be fine. It is the best deal out there for broadband hands down IMO.

I am glad I am not the sys admin at COX this weekend.

John...you want a local job?...I bet they are paying TOP dollar for a few good men!

#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&, and to think you were afraid about dial-up this morning, "John, I can't go back!!!" ;) :D :p

Mr Sandman - I'd love a job in Rhody, I might just need to look inito that ;) ... But even better, how does one arrange a suitable IT position that allows one to work at home?

I use my COX@HOME very much as well. Just for my regular job, I spend a lot of my time over my VPN to check servers, security, job kick-offs, and various remote access products. Going back to the near dark ages would be difficult for more than a couple weeks. Other high speed options are out too. I don't think I would touch fixed wireless yet even if it were available (which I doubt) and xDSL is too unreliable through Verizon (I'm told) and they're practically the only game in town. Plus the distance bit, I'm not much over 2 miles along the Telco poles to the CO but Verizon's line tests run an absurd 22K feet - out of DSL range...

When I started this site 18 months ago, it was all run on a 384 SDSL out of my living room in Braintree, Ma. I was only 12K from the CO but it wasn't cheap, the cost has gone up a lot since then too....

During my dinner with the VP I told (her) that cox should give away internet service to everyone in the state FREE for 3 months. No one would give it up after that. They would sooner adjust theri food budgets then give up the cable modem. Most people who use dial up have no idea wht they are missing out on. Broadband cable has the lowest turn off rate of any service EVER! Once you get it, your hooked. When they raised rates...no one dropped the service.. My COX internet costs 34.99/ month . My neighbor has AOL (25 /mo) + and extra phone line via verizon @ 28 bucks /mo and lives live with busy signals and 56K with the family fighing for the connection...duh? His kids plead with me to convice their dad to get cable.

RE cox job:
I really think you should at least drop your CV off at COX..You KNOW they need software/network guys.... You might even be able to swing a working@home deal at least for some of the time. You really should inquire. They have got some serious pressure on them to migriate 500K+ customers over to an untested and unfinished system. And they want continued growth. You know they are offering jobs to @home support guys.

Go back to a modem...You got to be kiddin..I transfer about a 500 megs to a gig of data via ftp nearly every day between my office here and DC. It is not an option for me. DSL....Good technology but the distance limits are killer, I know I am out of range.

If I had to I would go satallite but the speeds are not as good as cable and it is 3X more expensive then cable.

I'm going to do that. It's a bit off my beaten track but not too much. The telephony area is where I'm weak and my Cisco skills are really limited to end user work....

I just saw this on DSLReports

AT&T @ home the odd one out

On the day after the ruling allowing Excite freedom in dealing with the cable franchises, it appears that only AT&T@home did not negotiate a temporary extension, and was shutdown. There are, however, various DNS, email and outage problems continuing with the other @home partners, perhaps due to the general chaos. Although AT&T has a backup network, and some customers have switched (picking up sought after email addresses as well), one must assume most AT&T cable customers are currently dead or on dialup. Discussion continues in AT&TBI forum or @home forum, join the party there now..

I have a 2 dsl lines at home . One is for my wife's job ( they pay ) and goes thru theyre routers and out . The other is for my job ( they pay ) I dont go thru theyre equipment , Im in a tunnel right to our routers thru the D-slam at the Co and out . I have never had a problem with the eithe rof the DSLs . Ive had mine for almost 2 years and the wifes is only 6 months old . The distance factor needs to be expanded as soon as they can cause that is hurting alot of potential customers .
