View Full Version : Canal (pier) bikes...
bluefish 04-29-2005, 08:25 AM I'm posting this here because I think I remember reading that more than a few of you use bikes when fishing the canal. I live in Brooklyn NY. Nowhere near the canal but there are a few piers and the entire length of fishable shoreline that runs from Caesars bay to the 69th St. pier and I guess since most of you don't know the area, that runs about 3-4 miles. Alot of guys around here use their bikes to get to the fishing, but few are really "tricked out" for the sport.
I wanted to see some pics of some of the "canal specials".
Mine has a zippered bag up front for the radio, a rear mounted rack with 2 rod holders, 2 collapsible baskets mounted to the sides of the rear rack and a second (rear) kickstand to stop the bike from toppling over with all the gear on it.
I learned about the kickstand from reading Ron Arras book, The Ultimate Guide to Surfcasting, and let me tell you it's a great idea.
People are amazed when they see how fully functional the bike is and how much it effortlessly carries. They are always impressed by the design and more than a few have said they never even dreamed about adding a rod holder or two but rather they just bungee the rods to the bikes frame. Well anyway, whatever works. I was just wondering if anyone else (besides Ron) has these "tricked out" fishing machines.....
ProfessorM 04-29-2005, 11:16 AM Most everyone I know who plugs the canal uses a bike. Need to. Double baskets in the back and two pvc tubes. Pretty simple. Old girls bike, without the support bar, so you can jump off fast without a rupture. I use a drilled out golf ball shoved on the kick stand end to keep bike from tipping over and digging into soft soil. Cheap and simple. Get too fancy and someone will steal it at night while you fish. Seen it happen more than once. Funny I have never seen Ron A. on a bike. P.M.
t.orlando 04-29-2005, 01:30 PM Sounds like your bike is fine. No photos of mine. Like PM said, dont go crazy if you wanna keep it. Nothing like riding by someone with a cow barely fitting in the basket :grins:
outfished 04-29-2005, 01:34 PM Okay, here's mine. I know some of you guys have seen me out there on my new bike. Everything you see here comes standard except for the 50 calibur. As you can see it's loaded! Fog lamps, gaff(which comes in handy if you drop your car keys or cellphone into the ditch). 4 rod holders, 3 on the handle bars, 1 on the side. I only use one to keep the weight down, saddle bags (which I swipped from some hells angels bike at the foxy lady one drunken evening), front attached quick release beer cooler, which has a built in cd, dvd, mp3 player and satellite phone. Fighting chair with harness (to keep me from falling off when I'm sleeping), 1 ton anchor that acts as a spare braking system(yes antilock), and finally the 50 calibur I though I'd add on for chits and giggles, sure is a head turner and keeps the gulls at bay! This all can be had for relatively short money which I should be able to pay off in 7-8 years. :laugha:
afterhours 04-29-2005, 07:25 PM girls bike- no, open framed bike-yes :grins:
bluefish 04-30-2005, 02:07 PM Well I've seen pics of the canal and I know that you can be a good distance from the bike at any given moment but such is not the case here. Here, you are fishing over a rail. The bike is always near you so theft is not such a problem. It also gets the Kryptonite lock to the rail for good measure.
outfished... lol. The only thing that bike is missing is plumbing and tank treads~
Prof M~ the golf ball is a great idea for the kickstand especially in the soil/sandy terrain! :kewl:
Swimmer 05-01-2005, 10:55 AM Outfished,
I don't like black. Does that come in any different colors? What about the chick in the waders? Will she bait my hook?

I have. Look for an orange bike with Lamiglas decals on the rod holders ;)
You can ask him about the day he almost bought the ranch on it at Highbank :D
Hi Ron. :hidin: You made a friend for life with the fly rod you sold to Christine. She's off at a fly tying class as we speak.
ProfessorM 05-01-2005, 05:13 PM Mike your right now that you say that I remember the color. Problem is the last several times I have seen him he has been on the opposite side as me so the bike was out of sight, but his lure was right in front of me that is why I knew it was him. P.
