From Cape Cod Times 4/28/05

BOURNE - The Army Corps of Engineers met yesterday with the Massachusetts Highway Department to discuss the results of their recent study. The study was conducted by both organizations to determine the plight of the Cape Cod Canal, it seems that the ever increasing tourist traffic is taking its toll on the two bridges that connect Cape Cod to the mainland. Jeremy Santiago of the Army Corps of Engineers had this to say, "A total rebuild of the steel structures would be an astronomical expense."

The study conducted over the last 3 years tested the strength of the bridges (built in the 1930's, the volume of local traffic and the volume of boat traffic through the Canal. The weight of the study landed on the side of the motorist. Carl Bernhard of Acushnet Architectural Association conducted a case study on the life expectancy of the two bridges and had this to say, "The structures are old and the construction is old hat" said Bernhard, "With the volume of traffic going over these bridges these days, I give them 2 ro 3 years before we see serious deterioration."

Needless to say, an agreement had to be reached, fast. The two organizations settled on removal of the bridges and filling the historic Cape Cod Canal back in. "We know the history at stake here and we know that many will be saddened by our decision, but we feel that these drastic measures must be taken before something catastrophic happens" said Santiago. Constuction will begin on June 14, 2005.

If even one third of the sqandered, embezzeled or stolen money from the big dig was available, then we could build three more bridges with 6 lanes each :smash:

To compare, what's the new Sakonnet River Bridge gonna cost? Like 125 Million...

I could see the Canal replacements being double that easy...

If this was true and planned by state beauracrats, the plan would be to use the dirt from the tunnel to fill in the canal.

They would not have to fill it in....just tell everyone it is the last year for the canal. Everyone would fish it like never before and all the lost lead would create a natural fill-in!

Canalman - Nice one ;)

there is no damn way they can fill in the canal to much current they cant just stop the flow the canal is there forever. the canal was built to provide safe passage to ships fill in the canal you are going to have a ton of ship wrecks around the outercape

Those bridges are in pretty sad shape, i guess the bourne is in worse than the sag. I know a guy that was doing rescue training off the bridges, hanging by ropes and all that jazz and he said they were in pretty scary shape. Im sure everone has one spot that has taken so much tackle they would love to see what in the hell that canal monster looks like that is getting ready to open a tackle shop. How many of you guys have thought bout fishing right off one of the bridges? I think of it everytime i cross over, impossible but still intriguing.

All would be well if more people used the tunnel :wiggle:

Actually they're going to submerge the canal... that is, put it under the existing canal. Then they'll fill the ditch and make a nice green park on top of it. What a concept :hihi:

That wil be known as "The even Bigger Dig"...
if they get many more leaks in the Big Dig, that might become an underground canal......

Gee.......I hope that doesn't affect the tunnel !!! If that gets filled in what would we do?????????????
