View Full Version : OK, serious question here...
JohnR 12-09-2001, 03:22 PM Other than the obvious lathe, what equipment do you all think is essential to building plugs, more involved stuff than just needles...
(I like that belt sander arrangement, I'd even try to add a little jig so you can make facets on different angles of the plug body)...
Thanks...
Tattoo 12-09-2001, 03:30 PM Drill press and a lathe is really all you need John.
Have you been bitten by the plug bug?:D
Slipknot 12-09-2001, 03:48 PM here is a nice little belt sander set up. , cheap too.

Slipknot 12-09-2001, 03:52 PM A hand drill and bits also. Maybe a coping saw. Some kind of saw to cut to length. You can always use screw eyes instead of thru wiring as an option.
Adam R 12-16-2001, 10:28 PM Band saw and dremel tool are real handy too.
JohnR 12-17-2001, 08:55 AM The other day I was thinking "If only the Dremmel had more tourqe, I could fabricate my own Plug Lathe...."
Down the road, I'll be adding some of the necessary tools for my other "Projects" around the house. Then I'll be in the game ;) - Thanks guys...
Adam R - Welcome to SB...
Clammer 12-17-2001, 01:35 PM John, keep to the rod building, if you add anything else to your plate you;ll never earn enough [home] points to go fishing again///;)
Slipknot 12-17-2001, 04:10 PM John, yesterday I saw something on the plug forum on SOL that turns a drill press into a vertical lathe. Pretty cool attachment. Now don't you need a drill press to finish the basement? the attachment is about 58 bucks
TackleMaking 08-21-2002, 04:39 PM I would also add a "Turning Wheel" for drying the paint on the lures. Unfortunately, nobody makes or sells them, but there pretty easy to build at home.
Here's a photo so you know what I mean.

It looks massive, but it's actually a very cheap item to build and it will seriously improve your finishes.

tlapinski 10-16-2002, 11:40 AM what type of wood is generally used? is there certain wood for certain plugs? also, anyone have a good mold for pouring lead to weight plugs the way gibbs weights theirs?
JHABS 10-16-2002, 01:15 PM JOHN R, A plugs a plug. it could be a needle ,swimmer , popper or what ever. It still has to be turned , drilled ,sanded ,water proofed ,painted and put together. LATHE, DRILL PRESS , SANDER,DUST COLLECTOR, the more tools the easyer the building becomes. also depends on how many you want to make.
Jigman 10-16-2002, 02:37 PM Table saw is good for ripping wood into blanks. Band saw for cutting slots for lips on swimmers or angles on a darter. Plus the other stuff that was mentioned. It just never stops :D

StarsnStripers 10-21-2002, 10:13 PM I know, I'm only a beginner, but what is Lathe? lol:laughs:
Do I make the blanks out of lathe or out of wood?? :smash: :smash:
JohnR 10-22-2002, 07:28 AM Yo Stars! Is wood shop next semester? Or has it been gutted from the school budget? This is what turns up after a search on the word LATHE (http://www.striped-bass.com/vbulletin/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=6855&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending&pagenumber=1) when the http://www.striped-bass.com/vbulletin/images/top_search.gif (http://www.striped-bass.com/vbulletin/search.php?s=) button is used...
Clammer, somehow, this thread resurfaced recently as I started it last year after the Plug Party over at Slips house. I was very impressed with the way things were done (and I still am). But I'll be doing something to a boat before I get a chance to make plugs....
