View Full Version : storing sabiki rig
nightfighter 05-06-2005, 08:53 PM So you just got your fill of herring or macks and are ready to go slay 'em with liveys.....what do you do with your jigging rig??? How many times have you seen a sabiki all twisted sitting in a bucket, needing 5-10 minutes to set up for next time? Well John Pirie, who charters up this way shared a slick solution that's cheap too!
Get a section of 3/4 PVC pipe and cut in half, about 5 foot section. This is your new jigging blank, a little whippy, but it does the trick to about 20 foot depth. Two small hose clamps to hold an old spin reel (we all have em in the corner of the cellar) Drill a hole approx a foot above reel and file diagonally to smooth opening for line as it enters into the PVC. A fender washer at the bottom of the sabiki rig, or above a weight stops the rig inside the PVC for storage. I know there are other rigs on the market, but here's a simple, do it yourself, solution.
Mr. Sandman 05-06-2005, 08:58 PM This is a good idea. I can't tell you how many times i have had sabiki hooks in my hands and why I just throw them away and take out a new one. The make a mess if you don't take the time to store them one by one.
Do you have a photo of this storage rig?
"uffah!!" 05-06-2005, 09:00 PM What is a Sabiki Rig? and what does it look like?
nightfighter 05-06-2005, 09:03 PM Sorry Sandman, Don't have a digital in the house tonight. Made it up in 15 minutes. I will try to get a shot for you this rainy weekend. (If you don't make one, I'll bring you one to the Derby :D )

Like this..
tynan19 05-06-2005, 11:25 PM Good tip nightfighter, I have been storing mine all wrapped up in a baggie. Most of the time it just doesnt cut it when you need to get it back out.
Raider Ronnie 05-07-2005, 06:15 AM I have a few pvc tubes I keep on my boat that are a bit longer than the sabiki rigs.
The bottom of the tube has a cap glued, the top has a cap not glued,
the top, I also have a slot cut down the tube about 2 inches down to to slip the top of the line through with the the swivel left on the outside of the tube.
I leave the sinker on the rig to store it in the tube.
I drop the sinker in the tube 1st and feed the rig down the tube, catch the swivel through the top of the tube and slip the top cap on, then they are stored standing up in my pilot house.
Drill some holes in the bottom of the tube for drainage if you want to rinse the rigs!
If I'm going to use the rigs on a daily basis, I leave them on the rod with the sinker attached.
Wrap the bottom of the line just before the sinker around the reel handle a few times!
If you want to spend a few $$$ they sell a sibiki rod, that is a hollow tube/ rod! :hihi:
"uffah!!" 05-07-2005, 07:46 AM Thanks guy's, now another question. What kind of fish are you fishing for,
and what size hooks are they?
nightfighter 05-07-2005, 10:45 AM Uffah,
Sabiki rig is for jigging up macks, herring, shiners, etc for livelining. or just adding to your bait supply if you don't have a livewell. They come in different sizes but hooks are quite small. i only go up in size when the bull macks come in.
fishsmith 05-07-2005, 06:53 PM cut up a foam pool noodle to size and you can store loads of sabiki rigs
the pvc sabiki rods work great.
