Thats the word that says it best about Bliz's new trolling rig The Bait Simulator. Jane and I took the day off and went to the Westport river for a boat ride. As this was a (ride) I was not fishing till we started back for the landing then I told her I had a new rig from Don that I would like to troll a little just to see how it worked. This thing is great if you don't mind trolling and catching fish that don't count that is. I fished it on a leadline rig so I could work the changing depth of the river easily. I was going to keep this thing to myself but you know me, can't keep my mouth shut. It puts very little drag on the rod and lets you know that it is working by the rod tip action. I put the rig over and started down the river just to see how to work it. It looks sweet in the water like a small school of herring or pogies. I guess it looks real as I was in only 8 feet of water and a ofspray came over and started to follow the rig behind the boat. I took the rig in till I got to a deeper part of the river as the bird realy wanted a shot at these (fish). I put the rig back out down river as we came up on a deep hole that usualy has a few fish in it. There were two guys trolling live herring there already that went nuts trying to see what I was using as they had gotten nothing so far and we got a small fish the first pass. They kept trying to see the rig and even came over close to get a look see. This rig will float if you stop the boat so I am thinking my 9er rigs may not see much action this season. If you like to troll you got to see this thing in action I am hooked!!!!!!

9'ers on wire works but they tend to wear out the angler as well as the fish.

these are the slammers that Al Gags tried to market to surfcasters.
problem was: they dont cast too well.
Don Blizard {bliz} took them and adapted them for trolling. and man-o-man what a rig he came up with!
these things are deadly! and they swim like the #^&#^&#^&#^&ens.
look out school tuna, here we come!

tff: they work great for sight casting on Dorado too.

You're not throwing far so castability really isn't an issue.

Them west coast salmon plugs (look up ace high etc.) are also KILLER for offshore fish.

Jim I thought of you and Devils Bridge as soon as I saw how good this thing works. You just might see me out there this weekend if the winds are not to bad.Also can't wait to get over to Sow and Pigs with it. This thing trolls and controls the best of any BIG school rig I have tried. Congrats Bliz I think you have a winner. Now how about bringing a few other colors over and you and me giving them a try out side as Jim said I would love to be a tester for some other colors :bl: . That first one set me back a bit but you got to pay to play.Matt yes thats the rig I bought one from the guy at the show.

Its pumping offshore still, pigs and devils bridge have some heavy swells.

likwid is right...yesterday it was blowin 25-30 again and the swells were pretty big. It was weird...70 deg at my house in the sunshine, went down to the boat it it was 48 and frezzing cold blow your hat off kind of day...so I went back to the house.

I may have to try one of these "bliz-krieg" rigs. GB...did it tangle or twist up up much?

Wed it hit about 75 at the house but on BB and Vineyard Sound it never got above about 45-50. Was just plain miserable out there if you weren't in full foul weather gear.

Never switched the instruments over to water temp, was too cold to care. ;)

One boat fishing quicks and nobody out on pigs or the bridge yet.

Jim never got a tangle and I don't think it can twist its made with real good snaps/swivels so it seems to ride true at all times. You asked about a down rigger do you have one and use it? I have a Scotty that I have had for years but only used a few times but would like to learn how to put it to good use this season so any help would be great.

Capt Don's shop was experimenting with some daiseychain stuff a little while back and was apparently hammering bass and tuna on them. My only caution is make sure you have good strong line :hee: .

Saw a rig like that last year at J&B Tackle sold as an offshore trolling lure. If I remember correctly there a little pricier than a 9er,somewhere around $150 for the chain with many colors to choose from. I might spend that on a tuna lure but to drag something in that price range around some rockpiles could a get a little pricey. Nice rigs all in all.

I agree about the line John... as I believe that there will be some very LARGE fish taken on these rigs.

I am not exactly sure how to classify this product due to the uniqueness of it's design which by the way Jim... is virtually tangle free.

I wouldn't call it a daisy chain because of the way the baits are set up to actually change position within the school while the rig is moving through the water... the spring loaded pivoting droppers were designed to swing freely around the main harness and the baits swim independently as opposed to the linear pattern that you typically see on a daisy chain setup.

There are many advantages to the design of this product due to the unique features of the Slammer, this offers the boater a totally different experience when trolling.

Umbrella Rig Trolling is more excercise than sport when the rod tips and you have a fish on... every bass is a 50 lb'er until you get it to the boat.

This new concept lets the angler enjoy the fight and weight of the fish as opposed to fighting the tackle. Plus you can use more than one of these if you're trolling by yourself...

In addition,

There are many more other features to this rig that offer an advantage over trolling softbaits.

This rig will raise more fish than softbaits due to it's ability to create more vibration in the water.

Combine that with a healthy visual presentation, and you have a winning combination when trolling.

I hope to see many bass & tuna caught this year on this product.

I took Capt Don out today and he let me drag one of those rigs around through Upper Bay. WWWOOOWW does that thing swim sweet through the water. Looks just like a little school of bait fish. Even dragged up a couple stripers around the channel infront of Barrington. Unbelievable watching that thing in the water. I'll definately be trying around the dump this year from some Tuna with one of those Don. :kewl: keep up the good Work pal.

They are available in a number of colors. Go see Mike Thomas, he had some at the Mass Bass show. The price has come down a bit as well. I got the blue/green mack pattern. Cant wait to use for schoolie bluefin. :rotf3:
