Well, I was visiting my relative last week who has a new 27' CC whaler w/twin verados. He had only taken it out once for a short run and loved it. The electronic throttles are really sweet (engines automatically sinc-up if they are within 500 rpm) and the torque is fantastic he said.

He took it for a real run the other day....alarms went off and eventually starboard engine died. He limped back to the dealer who is working on it now. I bet these didn't have more then 5 hours on these engines before breakdown. This is a brand new loaded boat costing serious coin. Like I said I don't care who makes em... outboards are not reliable and everything you read is how great these things are is all fabricated marketing ploys. My next boat will be a diesel no question.

I'll stick with my straight inboard chevy 350. Maybe someday a deisel when this gives up the ghost.

Outboards are a PITA, but I have to ask, were they broken in before he punched them WOT?

I'll take a nice diesel with a freshwater system/keel coolers/dry stack any day over outboards.

Likwid,
Honestly I don't know. I do know that the dealer is one of the more respected dealers in the area and sells a ton of whalers with mercs.
I still don't care, this kind of breakdown really ticks me off as you constanly read mean time between failure and reliability figures basically illustrating that these engines will not breakdown. It appears the fuel pump failed. How the hell can a fuel pump fail on a brand new expensive unit like that? IMO this is STRIKE one against the new great verado.

i agree, strike one. I never really trusted merc anyway.

I hope the E-tec ends up to be as great as they say.....

have spent over 50 hours on a 275x3 verado boat and love every minute of them. controls are very nice as are the steering. Have 700 hours on 2002 HPDI's are have not had one issue and they always start on the first try. older outboards definitely have some issues as far as fuel burn and starting. love to hear what the problem was before jumping to conclusions? 21k apiece to have them poop the bed is bull though. keep us updated on the conclusion. :devil2:

New outboard growing pains?

Need we mention Fichts Injection? :rotf2:

Devils: 275x3? Hope you weren't footing that bill.
A pair of big inboards would consume half as much with just as much speed set up right. :D

Should have bought ZUKES simple design no frills just a solid motor that turns a big wheel. 20 hours on mine and not a hiccup and it was thousands cheaper than Merc Verado. :btu: Your argument for an inboard is a bit weak, I dont care what you buy new eventually you get something that isnt right, computers, cars, everything. We had a brand new 120K generator put in at the bridge while I was there and it had an injector problem at startup :conf: Imagine a brand new diesel generator with a problem, was it a POS no it just had a problem. I got another one for ya my ex boss bought a brand new 52' Hatteras with twin diesels he had less than 30 hours and started having issues with one motor they would not replace his motor stating it wasn't necessary he now does not trust this motor and chooses to putz around Buzzards Bay instead of fishing the canyons taking trips south etc, he will eventually trade it. Need I state he paid something like a million 2 for this boat.

Likwid it might be possible with diesels. Triple 275 Verados 42 knots on the gps 30-33 gallons an hour. Wot around 70 mph. Don't know diesel boats with that kind of speed. Oh yeah I wasn't paying the bill. My 200's burn 15gph 2.2mpg at 33 knots. :devil2:
