View Full Version : surf virgin , any last tips
blue oyster 05-26-2005, 04:55 PM heading out for my first surf fishing trip sat nite (i'm a boat guy but trying to broaden my horizons :D ) i have waders , small neck lite , hat , bug repellent , small shoulder bag 12 asst. plugs , couple of tins , rubber shads , teasers , spare spool , extra leaders , needle nose plyers , small knife , sand spike ,2 rods , rain jacket , can anyone think of anything else i might need ?, also the waders are just rubber do i need to ware long underware this time of year?
Moses 05-26-2005, 04:58 PM Someone to go with who has done it before, especially the area you may be heading to.
nightfighter 05-26-2005, 05:14 PM Lose the sand spike, and bug repellant (too cold I think) take fluidsand some food, nailclippers, something that can cut a hook and small first aid kit. That's just me, never used a spike with plugs. Wool socks and fleece pants should be enough.
BigFish 05-26-2005, 05:28 PM Ditch the extra rod and travel light...get a good all purpose rod, one good for throwing plugs and also has a decent backbone for that "big fish" you might get into! :btu:
Use your car/truck as a basecamp. take ONLY what you need when you leave yoru buggy. A couple plugs, and soft plastics is usually all i bring in my plug bag for weaponry. i also carry a spool of leader material, swivils, snaps, plyers, and a small knife. Thats it. back in my buggy, i have an extra reel, a slew of plugs, maybe an extra rod.
Right now my plugging rod is a GSB 1201-L with a 360 slammer.... the total weight is about 3 pounds :D
The lighter you fish, the longer you can fish.
Swimmer 05-26-2005, 06:37 PM Alone/at night, I suggest a PFD. Especially if your going to stand in nay moving water. Remember at night you can't see what your stepping on, or very little of it. And what was said about the first aid absolutely, one with the anti septic chit in case the same hook you put in your hand was just impaled in a bluefish. Cell phone........in caes no one else mentioned that. And good luck.
Mike P 05-26-2005, 07:35 PM Stick a spare neck light behind the plug inserts in your bag, or bring spare batteries and a spare bulb.
Take an extra shirt and pair of pants and keep them in the vehicle, so you don't have to drive home in your skivvies or bare-assed if you take an unexpected swim.
Notaro 05-26-2005, 09:51 PM stick to one or two style of fishing. pack two setups or one if you are planning to chunk and use lures. also, good luck!

Ya, done that and it's no fun.
Rob Rockcrawler 05-27-2005, 12:19 AM Had to call it a day last year after bout a half hour . My girlfriend thougt she was being helpful when she cleaned my truck before we left. Good intentions, really crappy idea in november.
Extra lighter if you smoke.
lurch 05-27-2005, 01:38 AM I agree with the truck base camp idea. I do not like using another persons vehicle because I always forget somthing because of the different type of fishing scenarios.
This may sound like a doomsday prediction but.....I know you said you had a knife but try to keep it on your belt so if you do take a dive and your waders fill up (past your wading belt) you can cut them off.
PFDs are only 100$! We spend more money on lures and reels and they will not save your life. Spend the cash on a PFD, your significant other will feel much better!
Rappin Mikey 05-27-2005, 05:50 AM eels!
PERSONALLY- I would go in the day a few times to get the hang of it before any night trips. You can catch plenty of fish until mid-June durring the day.

Like everyone said, travel light.. If you don't know the area it is a very good idea to go during the day and scope it out. You don't wanna go stranding yourself on some bar with an approching tide or something like that... You say Sat pm, are you going out with MSBA to Plum Island ?
Steve K 05-27-2005, 08:52 AM I would definitely check out where you are fishing during the daylight first or at least get there before sunset and fish into the night. I don't know where you are fishing but there are a few places where I fish that are so dark and at times foggy that it is difficult to find my way to and from my spots if I did not know the area so well.
blue oyster 05-27-2005, 01:10 PM thank you all for the great tips , i will not be fishing alone , one last question , do you ware long underware with rubber waders this time of year
partsjay 05-27-2005, 01:17 PM I do. :uhuh:
Pete F. 05-27-2005, 01:19 PM I don't with breathables and the water was fairly chilly in Maine yesterday.
reelecstasy 05-27-2005, 01:20 PM i would if I were you. 47 degress is not warm, especially all night long
McSpooled 05-27-2005, 01:44 PM Not sure if I missed it below, but do make sure you have a wader belt. If you do get dunked, you don't want to fill up like a water balloon!!
Be safe, have fun.

And even if you don't, a lighter can come in handy (along with a stick of hot melt glue) if your tip comes loose.
