View Full Version : Who would you fish with?
eelman 06-01-2005, 10:49 AM If you could go back in time who would you most like to fish with? who are the surf ledgends that have influenced you the most?
For me it is Tim Coleman, who I owe much of what I know
There are many more surf ledgends , name your favorite and who if you could team up with them would be your choice!
Of all of these I have fished many times with Tim Coleman and he is a great guy, tim still fishes today as much as ever. Tim has a 60 and 3 50s from block island.
Second Question!
If you were hot and heavy fishing in the late 70s and 80s where would you rather be at that time
1)Block Island
2) Cape Cod
My choice hands down! Block Island, that place was smokin them and it was never talked about!
Karl F 06-01-2005, 10:57 AM Arnold Laine, or #^&#^&#^&#^&ie Samms, or better yet, both... if your ever up at Nelsons, look at all the old black and whites... looked like those 2 had it down.
late 70's early 80's... Cape, if it was Monomoy :D especially late summer/fall of 81.... :D
Slipknot 06-01-2005, 11:09 AM Stan Gibbs for sure. Also Charlie Cinto :kewl:
I'd love to have been on the beach with Tony Stetzko the night he caught Bertha.
It would be great to fish with all of those guys.
2. Block Island for sure.
likwid 06-01-2005, 11:12 AM None of the above.
Chet and the islanders. ;)
jsullivan 06-01-2005, 11:28 AM Pete Zaface
I love NY waters
Mike P 06-01-2005, 11:31 AM Stan Gibbs for sure. Also Charlie Cinto :kewl:
Been there, done that ;) The only problem with fishing with Charlie is that you'd spend too much time ROTFLYAO. :rotf3: :rotf2:
My choice would be the Mad Russian, Sergey de Somov. He racked up eye-popping catches everywhere from Sandy Hook to the Cape, and almost everywhere in between. Won the MV Derby 2 or 3 times, always with fish over 50.
The Block would be more my style. Big water, rocks, tough fish in tough terrain. Especially when I was in my 20s. Nowadays, I'd probably rather be a sand sissy :ss:
BigFish 06-01-2005, 11:39 AM Stan Gibbs hands down....Flaptail #2...when we going?
capesams 06-01-2005, 11:41 AM there's two here in town..one boat ,one beach...that could and would fish the paint's off of most....when the fish weren't on the bite these two would still fill the truck and boat every trip out.But they arn't chest beater's so you wouldn't know them even if I typed their names.
You callin steve campo old :hihi:
the cape for sure..
Tattoo 06-01-2005, 11:41 AM Campo, just to see all his plugs.
capesams 06-01-2005, 11:44 AM u mean had
BigFish 06-01-2005, 11:46 AM I want to fish with Capesams! :heybaby:
Roseneath 06-01-2005, 11:55 AM I have to plead ignorance to most of the names on the list. With that being said, I'd pick Steve McKenna. He's always more than helpful everytime I see him and I'm sure I'd learn leaps and bounds about RI Fishing.
eelman 06-01-2005, 12:00 PM Not sure how many BI Guys you all know but another great out there was Mat Squilante who has since gave up fishing, he smoked the doors off the bass, he was one of the first out there with charlie dodge that found out just how good the block is. Even though I am not 20 anymore I still love rocky beaches, that type of structure gets my blood going, nothing like seeing the water make up near a nice boulder, you just know there is a bass there! the block is gorgeous bass water for sure. There were many new york guys out there who smoked the fish in 80s also, I am sure DZ Can pass on some more names
eelman 06-01-2005, 12:03 PM Steve was out on the Block in heyday and was as good as anyone else! Steve is right up there with any surf ledgend. He is a great fisherman. I dont mention him much because I fish with him all the time so for me , he is just one of the guys, by the way, steve and I will be on the Block july 6th for the new moon! Cant wait.
fishaholic18 06-01-2005, 12:17 PM JohnR...On his boat.... :uhuh:
Hi John. :wavey:
piemma 06-01-2005, 12:38 PM Charlie Murat, Dave Hammock, The Pergo brothers. George Heavey, #^&#^&#^&#^&y Conoyer and the others from the old Murats in No. Smithfield RI. They fished the Backbeach the right way back in the 70s. I fished with most of them and those guys could fish. 2 or 3 days straight with no sleep. Boy we did a number. :bc:
Daignault made himself a legend with photos and good story telling, plus his kids caught most of his fish for him :hihi:
I chose tim coleman. He sounds extremely humble.
partsjay 06-01-2005, 01:16 PM anybody from this site...I'm getting tired of fishing alone.
I would love to fish with the cape beach guys.....capesams, flap, BF, BM, RM....ect..ect
piemma 06-01-2005, 02:09 PM You know, George Calzone's name should be on the list. i fished with George and he was 80 then. I think he is in his mid to high 80s now and still fishing the Back. Got a 63 lber to his credit.
eelman 06-01-2005, 02:31 PM yes lots of names could not ad them all! how about Al Pellini he got a 60 out on block also
Karl F 06-01-2005, 02:33 PM George Carlezon (sounds like carlson) ? P-town George... yeah, he knows his stuff for sure.
Fish On 06-01-2005, 02:40 PM Cool thread. ever since I read his book striper surf I would have to go with Frank D., but if I'm on the vineyard I would have to throw Jim, alias the Sandman, onto the list.
jsullivan 06-01-2005, 03:01 PM I think if I were fishing w/ frank I'd want to be doing it from a beach chair with open ears he can spinn a good story :gu:
basswipe 06-01-2005, 03:20 PM How come Charlie Moore isn't on the list? :laughs:
ThrowingTimber 06-01-2005, 03:21 PM Campo. I've got a few of his plugs
Block all day.
TheSpecialist 06-01-2005, 03:37 PM Block, you and Steve. John could tag along as well :bl2:
chris L 06-01-2005, 05:09 PM I would fish with some reallly hot younger babes
but since thats not on my wife agenda . I would like to fish with arnold lane , andy lemar , kib bramhall or jack yee
I would have to say Janet Messineo and it would definately have to be the Cape.
Goose 06-01-2005, 07:12 PM I fish with an invisable freind, no more then one dude... sorry.
Skitterpop 06-01-2005, 07:40 PM Flaptail and BM :kewl:
BasicPatrick 06-01-2005, 08:15 PM Alive tody...My friends Steve Morris & a guy named TK
From the past...I agree with MikeP. on the MAd Russian but then again I think the Derby is just plain old religion
relentless 06-01-2005, 08:24 PM Patrick,
I would have to say Ted Williams and my Dad. Both are heros, Ted being a Marine Corp fighter pilot who loved his country and unfortunately the man who taught me how to fish can not go up a few stairs. This is due to years of cigarette smoking and now he is paying the price. If I could have just one day on the water with him again, I would cherish it forever.
PI guy 06-01-2005, 08:42 PM Along w/ Relentless I would choose Teddy ballgame and also his fishing pal Curt Gowdy. ;)
Jerry sylvester would be my 2nd choice :D
dondkim 06-01-2005, 11:34 PM I voted for Woolner but I really rather fish with Roy Leyva.
:D :D :D
Notaro 06-02-2005, 12:05 AM i voted steve van stall and #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&. with steve, i thought that i might get a good exercise. as for #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&, maybe watching him might improve my eeling skills.
however, i would like to fish with crazy alberto and BM. he is a diehard.
i would like to fish down the cape and rocky shore on RI.
the gals that make the PENN ads :kewl: thats one time I would'nt care if I caught anything and a close second would be John R and clamman but they would have to be together :smokin:
Squibby17 06-02-2005, 09:03 AM I'm a young guy but I have read lots about the good old days when monster bass were caught every day.
Sergey de Somov: is mentioned in "Reading the Water" by Robert Post. He was one of the best bass fisherman ever. He won the MV derby three consectutive years in a row between 1963-1965 with 52, 54,and 49 lbs bass he won again in 1969 with a 51 lb bass.
No one ever really got to fish with him. He was rumored to use lobster tails amoungst other things. He also would pick up his tackle and leave in the middle of a blitz if another fisherman was around. I'm certain he could have taught me a thing or two about pulling slobs from the surf.
http://www.mvderby.com/history/halloffame.html
I wish I had a mentor, because my Enthusiasm and drive is there, but I do spend many a night getting skunked and wandering beaches quessing rather than knowing where to go
I have never fished Block island (hope to get down this fall) but I'm going to nominate The isle of Martha's Vineyard in this debate but I'm openly biased.
Gloucester2 06-02-2005, 09:14 AM I fished with Coleman in the Keys - he's a quiet "actions speak louder than words" kinda guy.
Fished with Milt Rosko last summer on an overnight cod trip - he's truely a statesman of the sport.
I wanna fish with Jimmy Buffet on the Monomoy Flats with Flap, Slip and Dipship :D
Saltheart 06-02-2005, 09:43 AM I would most like to fish with old friends who for one reason oranother 9usually family) have no time to fish anymore or who i have lost track of over the years. I really couldn't care less about fishing with celebrities but if i had to pick some people , it would be stetzko and chirappo.
redlite 06-02-2005, 11:34 AM It isn't so much the actual "fishing" that I cherrish with Chirappo as it is the time spent talking and listening that I enjoy the most.
The same with everyone I fish with. To me it isn't about fishing. I fish with a great, great group of guys, most from this board, that what really gets me going is the sittin around shootin the bull tellin fishing lies resortin to "Plan B" when things are slow that do it for me. I don't care that some guy has caught this many fish or that many big fish years and years ago. Good for them. They need to take off their high school letter jacket. I am not a fan of celebrities and prefer to do my own thing than chase spots and reports. I have stood on beaches before slaying big fish every cast and had people walk up with their Walfart rod combos (the ones that come with mystery line on them), cast out, reel upside down, and catch BIG fish. Good for them too. Its a matter of gettin out there and doing it.
The thing that makes someone a skilled fisherman involves some technique as to where to be/ when, but the biggest factor next to luck is being able to be out there all the time. Fish have fins and move, so they could be at any spot at any time. Its just a matter of being in the right place at the right time.
Person I'd like to fish the most with is by myself more even though I can't stand myself, cause then I don't have to worry about "spot burnin" and make people angry. And I'd always catch the most fish.
Flaptail 06-02-2005, 12:01 PM I enjoy company but to seriously fish, without having to worry about catching or if the guy with me knows what he's doing or not, I prefer to fish alone. I fish with Woolner in a way, I have his boat. In four years it will be forty years old and this past weekend over a hundred bass were landed in it. Several in the 20 pound class, one bigger and lots smaller. I think he would be happy that it is still a viable fish catching machine. On the sand I like being alone under the stars and sometimes just look around and take in the scenery. I am at peace there or drifting across the flats at B-Harbor or Monomoy. Of course you are never really alone, the spirits of those gone 'round the bend are still watching. Me and the ghosts of all those who went before, that's who I like to fish with.
teaser 06-02-2005, 08:21 PM All these people are great at what they do , but ... if I had a choice I'd pick...
Heather Locklear!
Fish On 06-02-2005, 11:03 PM Saltheart I agree with your last post 100%!
SBASS1 06-03-2005, 07:05 AM I chose Charlie Dodge, because he's forgotten more about The Island than I'll ever know! However, Pat was a close second.
Saltheart 06-03-2005, 03:38 PM Hmmmm...fishing with heather locklear????? OH YEAH!!!! :)
chris L 06-03-2005, 06:10 PM now this puts a spin on this poll hands down
heather fishes ? Id wouldnt mind that myself . Oh yes Heather Ill fish with you during the day , sun shining bright in the sky , sure you could wear your bikini .
Linesider82 03-17-2015, 11:51 PM Bump.
Tim's written words were always great.
Tony, I just missed you.
Pat Abate, I'd like to fish with now.

Linesider82 03-18-2015, 12:06 AM Heather Locklear would also have been a good choice, she aged nicely.
:topic:
Rob Rockcrawler 03-18-2015, 12:45 AM Cool thread..
Whatever happend to Bill "#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&" Nolan?
Got Stripers 03-18-2015, 07:37 AM Boy didn't he and I have some fun debates:).
Boy didn't he and I have some fun debates:).
He did seem to have the knack of "pushing peoples buttons".
Captain Jason Colby 03-18-2015, 09:09 AM He did seem to have the knack of "pushing peoples buttons".
Dennis, don't you have work to do? (I'm pushing your buttons!!)
You gonna be at the MSBA Show? I will have a booth there-stop by and say HI!
JC
Headhunter 03-18-2015, 09:33 AM My first choice would be my boys over all the greats that are mentioned ( also my daughter and wife on the rare occasion they want to).
Block hands down for me
Did not realize this thread was so old at first. Very cool though.
DZ after "#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&" went to boat fishing I don't think he returned to the surf much, just kind of disappeared? Perhaps health related?
justplugit 03-18-2015, 10:25 AM Clammer, if you could GUARANTEE me I would get back alive. :D
buckman 03-18-2015, 10:28 AM I would go back and fish with my uncle Bill in the rips of Nantucket with guys like Bud Henderson and Spider Anderson.

piemma 03-18-2015, 10:37 AM Whatever happend to Bill "#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&" Nolan?
He's still around. Gave up fishing completely. Plays drums in a band on weekends.
Clammer 03-18-2015, 11:27 AM Yeah what Paulie said ............... I don,t think he even has any fishing gear left .......... worked so hard to get the commercial license & UNLESS HE HAS KEPT MAKING THE ANNUAL RENEWAL . tHAN hE JUST GAVE IT UP .. he didn,t have enough landing to see the boat & license :deadhorse:
Mike P 03-18-2015, 11:50 AM Bumping these threads always brings up the memory of those we lost way too soon. :(
Swimmer 03-18-2015, 12:14 PM Any of the islanders, Cooper Gilkes, for one, Dr. Post, another, simply for his perspective on fishing the Vineyard, not his catching ability. Some of the up-islanders that I used to run into years ago when I fished by myself, and would come across certain people coming out of certain dirt roads at odd hours.

There are people that I fish with now that I wish I could've fished the back beaches with during the glory days.
I fish rocks 90% of the time, but my love for fishing started on the sand.
Also my good friend Greg Zeek. I fish with him out of the boat, but would love to have hit the surf with him locally and out on the Block. No doubt that would've been wild :ss:
Poncho 03-19-2015, 09:31 AM There is a guy who works on the gol course I work at who is a starter. His name is Jack Wilson. He is 85 years old and started the beach buggy association way back in the day on cape cod. He used to fish from Brewster to race point every summer and live on the beach eating beans am fresh shore caught fluke. His association built sand dunes using snow fencing. He tells tons of great stories and has several fish over 50 and two fish in the 60's, primarily on plugs. I would have loved to see the undeveloped un touch land scape And fishery at the time.

Jimbo 03-19-2015, 03:37 PM Charlie Soares. I bet you get an incredible history lesson fishing with him.
piemma 03-19-2015, 04:42 PM So it's 10 years since the start of this thread. As you get older you look back and reflect on, not who you caught the most fish with but, who you had the most fun with. After all is said and done this should be about having a good time.
Here is my list:
Clammer who has mooned every living soul on th Bay but is my Fluke and BSB guru, my old surf partner RIRockhound who I spent hundered of hours with from Narrow River the Watch Hill, Back Beach and Tony O at the canal, John Habs (God rest his soul) at Fresh Pond Rock, Quonny and the Block. Steve Mckenna at Frenchmans Reef. Al Pellini at NR and the Block. He who cannot be mentioned, on the Bay and at Napatree in late November. Toby at Watch Hill Light oh so long ago. A lot of guys who have gone to the beach in the sky like Gil Guillitone, Chet Tomkins, Gene Ayotte, Lanny Grazini Dave Hammock, Charlie Murat.
I am past the age of wanting to fish with "the greybeards", I am one of them. About 50 years in the surf and boat with a couple off for the service and I wouldn't change a thing. Probably another 10 left in these old legs and then hang it up. But I still look forward to every year like I was 16.
For me, it is block island Jeff ... @ southwest point after 8 beers at yellow kittens.

nightfighter 03-19-2015, 05:21 PM My dad.... a lot of things I wish I could do with him now, at this point in life.... and ask him why I could never go on those Swordfish Tournaments.....
And Flaptail.... I really wish I had gotten to know him more. The few times we spoke he was a wealth of history and knowledge that he gladly shared.
Capesams too,,, old fart. Still breathing. Maybe. Someday.
Clammer 03-19-2015, 08:29 PM anyone that doesn,t drink or smoke while fishing :walk:
doesn,t have a watch ><.:uhuh:
& wants to have fun even if the P/B swims away because of a pigtail:huh:

JohnR 03-20-2015, 03:09 PM New (to you) wheels, Clammer? Got your message while in a meeting - will call later
Raider Ronnie 03-20-2015, 04:24 PM Call me crazy.
I could care less about fishing with any of these guys / legends mentioned.
My choice over anyone is fishing with my 2 sons which I do whenever im not booked with charters.
Only thing that could be better for me is if my grandfather were still alive to fish with my son's & me.

Clammer 03-21-2015, 10:35 AM THANKS nEBE > but its nice to know you,ll have a few years without any major problems & also a nice writeoff ;
Tacoma ,s are in such a high demand / try & find one & then see the price ..........................plenty of four doors around , But very, very few access cabs .:wall:
But on the good side .its easy to find in a parking lot . when everything else is silver or gray :jump1:
Jim in CT 03-21-2015, 11:35 AM Had a great night with Tim Coleman at Watch Hill Light many years ago, I told him I was a subscriber to his mag, told him I went to the keys every April, we had a nice long talk. A giving and gentle and humble soul, I think.
denis 03-21-2015, 12:10 PM Now the blood will not show, and it will smell good for a couple of weeks.
and you will always see RED.
good luck with it.
Clammer 03-21-2015, 01:02 PM thanks Bud , we,ll need it ><><>
I,m gonna drill a ton of holes in the floor .. so all the blood & gas & other crap will just drip out :devil2:
ok a little hijack here ...Clammer like the "new" truck (new are too much $$, and loose their value too fast unless youre on the buying end that is)...did you trade-in or sell the old? If not whats the issue with the old one and would you want to sell as is to someone for a "project? :)
Clammer 03-21-2015, 06:50 PM JENN Trade in $2500
had 160 K needed a left ball joint , frame was rotted right thru , windsheild had a large crack , exhaust system needed to be replaced , both pistons gone again on the rear hatch ..........might have been dirty beyond repair & who knows what else ..................
The manager @ the dealer said it was a shame ...... Because the body only had one small dent / the rear bumper needed to be replaced & some work to the tailgate .
But he said last year of that model 2004 / SR5 .Limited w/ the off Road package
but its going to auction & watch for it on TV . because they all are being bought & shipped overseas to the Arab countries // Wars
You going to make it fishing this year ?????:eyes:
Rappin Mikey 03-21-2015, 07:32 PM My grandfather Jerry Bombardier. He was awesome and I wish he was still around. I remember when I showed him a pic of a crazy blitz from shore off of Race Pt. about 15 years ago when I was just starting to get back into the game. He told me how lucky I was to see that. He also told me in my lifetime I would be lucky to see something like that again. I haven't seen something like that since (close though). He was right. Memories of filling the boat with Cod will always be with me.

Gonna try my best if you'll still allow it :)
Bummer on the truck. All minor except the frame.in 2008 I had to surrender my 98 taco and it went to the scrap yard. I heard about the frame issues and finally looked underneath one day.... we stripped every saleable accessory off and drove her down to the dealer. Cant complain because I got twice for it what I paid. It had almost 200k but I still miss it. Few years later hubby had to ditch his 4runner because of the frame too but no buyback on those (it was a '99) that too was in flawless condition as far as the body went...motor too. interior may have had some fishing funk :)... If you can find 'em you don't want to pay what people are asking. Love my 2001 Frontier I got to replace it. Put 2k in the engine last year. That hurt but when I looked at new they wanted $35,000k + for the modern day equilvilant and I just cant justify that kind of dough for a "light duty" truck......
anyway sorry for thread hi-jack again!

Aha,
I now meet all of these criteria. When we going fishing, Mike?
Ps thanks for the kind words about my friend. He smoked too much. Dead at 42. Just pointless

Fishing with Pop was fun. He'd get pissed when you got your jig caught on the bottom, but made everybody reel up and would have #^&#^&#^&#^&y drive around in circles until it was free. I'd give anything to fish with Raymond "Cookie" Ferriolli, Bobby Ruel, and my own personal favorite, Father Romulus, who would get so sea sick that he would scream for mercy to god( not just pray), on the boat. Every. Time. He. Fished. He used to literally kiss the dock when we got back.
I'm blessed to fish with #^&#^&#^&#^&y as much as I do. I want to keep that alive as much as possible.
After Paul's passing, I'm planning on fishing with Butch, Gabe, and Todd for some sharkin. I'm also going to bring my 8th grade bully (but high school best friend) Lou Polverini and Matt Johnson. They don't drink or smoke, like Clamma said.
Finally, some guys on the site:
John Pollack (we've been fishing together plenty in the past).
Night fighter
Slip
Billy Mitz aka the Specialist
Dangles
TFF again
Chris L
JR (no drinkin and smoking on my part)
TTB
Smokey
Big Fish and Slingah
Shawno and Rappin Mikey
Goose, Milo, and Hemdukas
Flap, Jenn, and Bruce
Bill and Jules
If I missed anyone, I'm sorry. I feel like I was present for fishing with a lot of my heroes, just not there 100%. I'd like to give it another shot the way that things are for me and some others now. I'm pretty sure I'd have a lot more fun!

justplugit 03-23-2015, 09:24 AM Clammer, but only if there is a guarantee I get back alive, and a 2 mil
Life Ins Policy is included anyway. :D
piemma 03-23-2015, 09:34 AM Fishing with Pop was fun.
I'm pretty sure I'd have a lot more fun!

bassballer 03-23-2015, 12:46 PM After years of talking shop with, I'd still like to hit the suds with McKenna.
Piemma, we still need to go gunning for the little tuny. This year definitley.
Im lucky enough to fish with some pretty good fisherman that are my age now. Having friends that fish just as hard as you do, and some who fish harder than i ever will keep the obsession going. When the texts come over from the morning you had to work, you cant wait to get out and one up them.
massbassman 03-23-2015, 01:19 PM DZ... just for the stories alone!

MAKAI 03-24-2015, 11:13 AM Can't beat fishing with Dad. Nothing he liked better than a few days of living like a gypsy on the back. Getting fish was a bonus.
He hates seals as much if not more than me.
One time he was snoozing in the back of the Ram at hatches by the sticks. I knew the top of tide would cover the bar by a couple of inches. I'm sitting in a beach chair half asleep and hear him yell.
He woke up and from his perspective thought he had drifted out to sea !
Was pretty funny !

numbskull 03-24-2015, 01:30 PM Strikes me that of all the fishermen that have ever lived I am just fine fishing with the ones I fish with now (plus Flap).

*&^% it take us digging! ( you'll let me try this time, right? :) )
Rick I'll bring the Wasabi, lemon and a knife....my mouth is watering thinking about 'em. You make a gourmet PB & J for Clammer as he wont partake in those briny delights on the half shell!
Duke41 03-25-2015, 06:03 AM My Uncle Paul DeChambeau. He was a early rod and reel tuna guy and a world class surf guy. Died way to young. The sea gave him a endless palate to paint his large life.
l.i.fish.in.vt 03-25-2015, 06:11 AM i would fish with these guys
Just realized I have fished with 8 of the names on this list.
jimmy z 03-27-2015, 02:39 AM Those are all legends mentioned, but there are so many good bass men over the years, not mentioned. I've fished with John, years back and would have loved to fish with Steve Campo. :kewl:
afterhours 03-27-2015, 06:32 AM would've loved to fish with campo, woolner, lyman and flap. current guys include prof m, numby, slip and some i'm forgeting. fished a few times with john - he made me go to the darkside once :eek5:.

good call Joe, it doesnt happen often but when she agrees to go "only on calm days", its great. Usualy just go out seabass and fluking. Go in by 9:30 and have breakfast. i look forward to it.
BatesBCheatin 03-27-2015, 12:28 PM Bob Pond. If it weren't for him, the bass may have been gone for good decades ago. This is a man that gave back and just didn't take.
