Again, I want to thank Don & Charlie from Weekapaug B&T (http://Weekapaug.com)and Mike & the family from M&Ds (http://capecodtackle.com) for donating plugs to "The Cause". Remember how they help keep the lights on here next time you're buying something ;) :p ...

OK - We have new STUFF from Mike @ M&D's this week. Same deal as last time, let's come up with a format and how to draw the lucky winners. I also like Don's suggested date of January 8 as a the final drawing date... Afterall, Navy Ships of War are cool...

http://www.striped-bass.com/Images/cctplugs.jpg

So, how should we run this one and how should we distribute the winnings?

Maybe make up groups of $10 prizes. Like 1 mackeral Pencil popper. 2 or 3 jigs . 2 swimmers , etc. Yes , if you won one in the first draw you're out of the second!! :)

thanks don charlie and mike . nice !! Ill take the mac poppers and the jigs and I could always use a few more bombers . Oh what the heck I'll take them all then there wont be any fighting amongst the boys !

How about if you have ever won anything " anything " in your life then you cant get in the drawing . That should sway the plugs alittle my way . ;)

same as is good and if you win in one your removed from the remaining draws .

John:

It looks like you have 9 plugs, 3 of which are poppers, and 6 jigs (including the shad in the lower right of the picture). Why not make up three sets each containing 3 plugs and 2 jigs. Make the 3 plugs one popper and 2 swimmers.

Then let your wife do the 3 drawings--and If you win, you're going swimming at the West Wall in April!!

Winners of anything during, say, the last year, are not eligible. Eligible members have to state their participation by email to the board.

Same as last time: If I don't win then it's rigged!!

How's that?:D

OK - groupin' a few things together works, three prizes including a mixture of stuff...

Let's have a little fun with this. So say that since Fishpart, Tattoo, & C-Ratt already won in the last round (and will be OK to win for future rounds), what if we took their three chances and gave them out to others for some funny story. If some of you cough up a funny thing that happened to you or a friend or something you saw over the past couple years fishing that's funny and would hold back cabin-fever a little, the 3 winners from the last round can choose which funny story they like best and give their "chance" to those that had one of the 3 funniest stories (am I making any sense here  ?)...

So the three with the funniest stories according to C-ratt, Fishpart, & Tattoo would double their chances in the drawing... How does that sound? Figure we have 3-4 months of cabin fever to squash here, may as well have some fun with it...

Just a little clarification... Don & Charlie @ http://weekapaug.com donated for the first one and Mike http://capecodtackle.com is donating for this one....

OK , here's the short version of a good fishing story:

I once had an old girlfriend who wanted to go fishing with me at Lake Quinsig in Worc/Shrewsbury MA. We were likely to get perch and largemouth bass , maybe even a trout. I had a good outfit but no spare so I set her up with an old baitcaster rod with a closed face zebco spinning reel on it. :) It wouldn't cast at all so I tied a big striper lure on there so at least she could cast it. It was a Rebel about a foot long with 3 sets of treble hooks.
Beginners luck , she hooks the largest largemouth bass i have ever seen alive in my life. She takes one look at this huge bass and throws the rod and reel in the lake and runs back to the car in the parking lot screaming in fear!! :) The bass swims away with the whole rig. I tried to snag it with mine but no luck.

As god is my witness , it's a true story.

Ok last year I took my brother and his friend , and brother in law, my sister and her boyfriend. We were using live herring. I was busy setting everyone up and hardly had time to get a line wet. After everyone elses lines were in I hooked a herring through the nostril. I went to cast it , and on the back cast it shot off and hit some guy in the back of the head. Embarassing yes, funny, yes only cause the guy had a sense of humor. Next time I get my lines in first.:smash:

this is also a true story, this happened back when i was a young lad lobstering on a rather small day boat, probably not more than a 30 footer. we used to do two and three day trips with this old wooden, historic gem. well to get to the story we, the captain and i, would take turns driving the boat while the other guy slept. one night it was kinda rough out and we were heading for home when i noticed the boat was feeling a little more sluggish than usual, i slowed the boat down and just took a look around to see if i could see anything out of the ordinary. i didn't see anything unusual, but because i slowed the boat down the captain had woken up up and ask me what was going on. i told him what i thought , and he went out on deck and lifted a plate and to our surprise it was full of water. great i thought to myself we are sinking as panic rapidly started creeping in.
there is one thing you have to understand, back then we never left shore without dry rolling papers and enough stuff to keep one twisted till we reached the dock again. the captain just happened to be one of the biggest heads/burnouts around, i wasn't to far behind him myself back then.
well anyways to get back to the story, i guess he got on the radio and notified some help and returned to me as i was bailing the boat out with a 5 gallon bucket. he stuck his hand into the bilge and fished around a bit and pulled out the bilge pump and started to inspect it and (i remember this clearly) pulled the cover off of the pump and there was nothing in it but a bunch of corroded green wires. i was pretty much stressed out bailing like the wind and not seeming to get any where. i can really remember him asking me to go and get some peanut butter and i'm thinking to myself what the hells he want peanut butter for the damn boat is sinking, so i ran and got the peanut butter thinking maybe he is going to coat the wires with it to stop the corrosion so we can get the pump working again. i still remember the look on his face when i brought the peanut butter back to him and he asked "where's the bread" . we're on a sinking boat and this guy wanted a sandwich, he sat there eating his pb sandwich while i continued to bail. he then put the pump together again. needless to say the pump caught up with the water and the packing around the shaft needed tightening, and we made it home safe and sound. that was my last trip on that boat. but those words"where's the bread " will be with me forever;)

JOHN, I don't have enough PLUGS.

DZ
01-04-2002, 09:55 AM
What's your Favorite Flavor?

We all knew we were pushing the season. It was now late November, Thanksgiving Turkey just a recent memory. Bass were still to be had on these island shores although we had yet to see any on this our last weekend trip of the year. Very few casters were on island now, just the hard core, the shadows in the night.
Zeke, Al and I worked the rock bar with needlefish plugs in the 35-degree night. Very cold but at least the wind was calm. We waded the bar gingerly so as not to get our hands wet, as they would then become useless appendages. We cast for an hour with no action save for the occasional 8-inch sand eel we would snag on our plugs. At least the bait was present.
Then it started. Zeke was the first to hook-up when we heard him mutter, "I'm on". Before Zeke could land his fish Al and I also hooked-up. These fish fought differently and when we beached them we knew why. They were all dogfish. Not an uncommon occurrence in the surf this time of year with the cooler water temps, but usually caught by the bait guys, not plugging. We continued to catch these doggies for the next half-hour. As we landed them they would spit up sand eels. By now we were somewhat resigned to the fact that we might not catch any bass. So we started to have some fun with our "dogfish blitz". We began a contest to see who could land the largest doggie, the winner would lay claim to a whole pint of Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey ice cream back at the cottage. As one of us would hook-up we would lean into the rod and yell "This is the pool winner" or "Bet you can't beat this one". We just couldn't believe we had all this bait but no bass. Must have passed by the island early this year.
Al had the lead with a nice 7-8 pound doggie. He said that the ice cream back at the cottage was already starting to taste good. I had another hook-up. Al and Zeke being the jokers they are started barking at me like dogs. But this hook-up was different; it was taking some line and heading up the bar with me in tow. Al and Zeke thought I was playing it up and followed me as I chased my ice cream winning doggie, the guys barking and laughing at me the whole time. When I finally had this hook-up in the wash I put my neck light on it to reveal a plump 20-pound bass. I lifted her up, turned and faced the guys who were still barking. Talk about two guys shutting up quick and running back to continue casting. I'd say I had the last laugh of the night (as well as what was the last bass of the season).
Al won the ice cream that night as my bass was ruled an ineligible species in the dogfish contest. He did share it with us. Since that night the three of us now refer "Chunky Monkey" as "Dandy Dogfish".

John,
Yea "Thumper & the Bass" is my classic BI story. Bobby is such a great guy and he really enjoyed that story after it was published in The Fisherman magazine. He became instantly famous. Of course he still builds the best surf rod in New England bar none.
My ice cream story is a compilation of events that have happend to me. I've combined them in one story because I just love to spin a yarn. Glad you enjoyed it.

I'll second D's opinion on Bobby's rod-building. No doubt about it, Bobby (Thumper) is one of the nicest guys around and does an incredible job on his custom rods.

He did a terrific job on my Lami 120 1L and this spring I'm gonna have him do a 10' Ron Arra for me...

Ooops, here comes the missus...gotta go...

Last summer, in August I think, the blues were busting all over the place around Monohan's dock in Narragansett at dawn. I got there, along with about 10 other guys, before the sun came up, and we all headed for the rocks to throw poppers at the noises (couldn't see anything yet but we could hear them).

There was an old Toyota fastback car parked right in the middle of the parking area; the kind with the huge back window that sloped forward over a rear deck that was the rear seat folded down. In the dark you could see that there were people inside, but no one paid any attention in the dark.

Well, when the sun started to come up and beamed into the car, it turned out that the people inside were two mid-20s kids, one male and one female, both sound asleep right underneath the sloping back window of the car. The guy was sleeping on his stomach; the girl was sleeping on her back. BUT, they were both strip, stark naked and surrounded by about two dozen empty Heineken bottles and a scrunched up blanket that covered their feet up to their ankles--only! :bgi:

Suddenly all those old blues whackers were milling around the back of the Toyota, ignoring the blues, and looking a lot like the smilies above!!! Except for me, of course.

Two massively hung over people trying to get dressed in a Toyota, while ten (remember that the 11th was fishing) grizzly dawn patrollers leaning on their Lamis were standing five feet away gawking into the back window, must have been a religious experience!

The kids left the area rather quickly when they woke up, much to the amusement and loud cheers of the crowd--I think they got a room next time. :D

Hey, can I play with you guys in this luck of the draw??

As for story, a couple of years ago, during our annual Cuttail Classic tourney, I was working a couple live eels during the dark hours, (see screen name) but was obviously not working where the big boys were. My brother fished from sundown till his "tribe" of 5 kids had had enough. He just left a couple baited hooks dangling from his transom over night. Lo and behold, the next morning he went to wash the boat down and reeled in the aforementioned hooks. He and the kids ended up winning a prize for most exotic fish of the tourney, a three foot long eel......... go figure

Sometimes wading at night can get just a little spooky.

Some years ago a friend of mine and myself were trying to figure out where to fish during the summer doldrums after getting skunked night after night at our regular spots. It was getting to be pretty frustrating, everywhere on the island was totally dead. Then we heard that some fish had turned up in Potters Cove and that was all we needed to hear.

Fog had begun to roll in that night as we crossed the Newport Bridge and headed for Jamestown. We were looking forward to anything at the end of a line - schoolies, blues, we didn't care - to break the curse and pull out of the slump.

As soon as we waded out into the cove we could hear an occasional splash in the far distance through the thickening fog.

"Didja hear that?" Paul said. "Maybe it's bass!"

"Yeah, I dunno - could be bluefish, too, who knows. Hey, some fish is better than no fish!"

We waded out waist deep across the soft mud. The tide was outgoing and we both started plugging toward the sounds in the fog.

We kept on for a half an hour with no hits, changing plugs and retrieves, trying everything we had with us. We could still hear the sounds of the occasional break but now with foghorns as a backdrop as it turned to pea-soup. The bridge disappeared in the mist.

"Any hits yet?"

"Nope - nothin'. I don't know, something's out there, though. I can still hear 'em."

I wasn't going to give up - it was always a contest anyway to see who would have the first fish for bragging rights, regardless of what it was. I looked over to my left in Paul's direction, he was less than 50 feet away, barely outlined in the haze. Now the only sound we heard was the plugs hitting the water. It had gotten eerily quiet.

All of a sudden, without warning, I heard him yell.

"ARRGGGHHHHHHHHHHH! GEEEEZUZZZZ!"

It scared the hell out of me in the silence and I could hear him thrashing around in the water.

"PAUL! WHAT'S THE MATTER? YOU OKAY?"

"GODDAMMIT!!!"

I turned on my necklight, rushed over to where he was and saw him trying to regain his balance. " Hey, what's wrong?"

"A coodeeesh! Goddam horseshoe crabs!"

As I looked down into the water when I got up next to him, there was a horseshoe crab trying to hop onto the boot of his waders as he backpeddled, no doubt mistaking the boot for...well, a lady horseshoe crab, I guess. Having the amorous crab grab his boot in the foggy darkness must have startled the hell out of him.

When I realized what had happened, I started to laughed so hard I literally couldn't stand up in the water. I finally had to stagger back into shore, laughing all the way and sit on the rocks until I stopped cracking up.

When he came out of the water I said "Hey, man, horseshoe crabs don't count." :laughs:

ok, it's last fall. new moon, foggy, lots on mung around, and lots of fish. i'm out perched on a rock next to a couple friends. we were picking up some bass and after every cast you had to clean your lure/line/teaser/terminal from the mung. we had some nice fish too, so it made us stick it out. now, you CANNOT turn on your flashlight to clean anything off. or even while landing a fish. so, i'm bringing in my lure, i'm starting to reach to clean off what i think is a nice pile of mung. as i'm feeling it take it off i'm thinking that this feels a little hard for mun....OOOOUUUUUWWWWAAAAHHHH!!!!! YOU SONOFABIT... and i pull my now pinched finger out of the green crabs pincher. my friends are asking what happened as i grab my rod and swing the lure w/ the crab still on it into a rock in front of me me make some scrambled crab. i tell them i got bit by a crab and they are laughing. yeah, real funny. eventually, i go back to the truck and glue the 1/2" gash in my finger back together. you know what's almost as good? i almost had the same thing happend the next week! this time, i pulled away just in time. but, i never put that light on!

Actually, Arby, before the Pats were "born", most New Eglanders were Giants fans. My father grew up in Lowell, and when I was a kid living down in Clifton, NJ, I remeber him enthusiastically routing for the Giants.

Now the Yankees.........that would be a different story. That's why when he moved to NJ he (and therefore I) became a Met's fan........he couldn't stand to watch the Yankees.......

Ok heres a hunting story that doesn't count. A few years back I bagged a fairly large doe and my buddy was helping me skin it outside in my garage. As he was pulling on the fur I was using my knife to help it along. Just then my neighbors kid a young lad around 10 decided to investigate. As he peered in his mouth dropped and his eyes got big as saucers! He ran out screaming the words I'll never forget " Dad!Dad! Hide Max they eat dogs next door!" Well it took us about ten minutes to pick ourselves from the floor just in time to see my neighbors jump into the car to leave for the day!

This is a little story about a friend of ours.. One night early last fall a group of guys went out on a great adventure in search of the great striped ones. Earlier trips had produced little success. On this day the gods would smile, for they had now entered into the land of Red. At first the searchers had very disapointed and worried faces from bluefish scattered on the beach caught by a few fisherman who had been"slamming them all night".
the distraught faces as the cigar butts started to pile up in the foam as the waves tried to reach the driest sand. Then it happened..... someone caught a striped one!!! And then another one. this one was worth a pic and a measure, and then another pic and measure. This continued for a couple of hours, and this night was deemed by all a great success.
John this story is all yours for spending all that valuable time on the beach taking pictures and witnessing measurements unselfishly. NOW WILL YOU PUT YOUR NAME ON THE GD LIST!!!!

THANKS

Red - That's OK, I get one or two perks & benies for running the site - it's OK not to include myself in this

But on the note of that wonderful story, this year I'm not going to get sucked into taking all of those Kodak Moments. I'll be fishing steel line from the beach so Clammer can't snip my line when I have a nice fish running and I'll be requiring people to purchase a Scale Cam (patent pending) to take their own dang picture when they weigh the fish. That way I can keep my line in the water...
