View Full Version : My final thoughts on Eben's post

I did read the rest of the thread that Eben started, and I was surprised at how fast the thread turned into a "share secrets" vs "not sharing secrets" discussion.

First, I don't know how my post got misinterpreted as a jealous beginner who was bitter that more experienced fishermen wouldn't share info. If you read that post (or any of my other posts), you'll see that not once, ever, have I asked anyone a question that would EVEN COME CLOSE to spot burrning. If anyone can find a post of mine that asks for that kind of specific info, I'll write John R a check to cover this site's expenses for the next 10 years. Once, I posted a question asking why some of the more experienced fishermen get so defensive about even general questions. Again, I can see the logic in being tight-lipped about where you fish. But if I ask "do surface plugs work during the day at Watch Hill", I don't see the harm in getting an answer.

In any event, that wasn't even close to what my post was getting at. It's one thing to be tight-lipped. It's another thing entirely to deliberately lie to , or in any other way, sabotage someone else's fishing, just because they beat you to your favorite rock. And that's how I interpreted Eben's post. If you got to your favorite spot and found someone there, would you tell them that you saw the cops towing their car just to get them out of there? If so, then you are an a**hole, and that's all there is to it. But, it sound slike there was more to the story then a couple of guys innocently trying to fish. To the extent that I misjudged what he did, I apologize

Again, that was my interpretation of what he did, and as someone who is trying to learn more about this sport, I was insulted. I was also surprised at the "cutthroat" reaction to my thread, because to me, one of my favorite aspects of fishing is the affable, helpful, approach that most fishermen have.

Finally, to those who justified what Eben did because "only the strong survive" and "big fish eat little fish", well, I respectfully disagree with that macho garbage. Helping out others is one of the most rewarding things you can do. And given the great response by others on this site, every time someone is looking to raise money for a pal in need, I don't think I'm the only one who feels that way. That's truly a pathetic outlook.

wow, i didnt know there was all this drama going on. It just killed about 45 minutes at work and I thank you for that. Now in regards to this issue, when I first starting posting here (about 2 mos ago) I think my first post was HEY does anyone know of any good spots in or around Beverly??? Had no idea that was a no no. And even after the responses I got I still didnt know it was off limits to ask that question.

So basically I say, if anyone is willing to help and put up with my stupid questions Im more than grateful and will return the help in any way I can. Being a n00b, i dont think the ol timers (dont worry your only as young as you feel) are really all trying to help but in a way where they want you to figure it out. Secrets???? no.....guidance????? slightly..... Direct knowledge??? maybe after you buy a few cases of the truth syrum :)

Also, after reading what unfolded.... We are fishing right?? This is supposed to be for the most part a stress reducer is it not?? I try not to take myself too seriously so when I screw up I have an excuse :)

Please PM me with all of your most productive and cherished spots.

Then, I will use the destructive reach of the internet to BURN THEM TO ALL TO HELL.

Soon, your spots will be over run with googans, garbage, and finally cops and fences replete with "No Trespassing" signs.

Thanks, and have a nice day.

I think there are varrying levels of helping others, advice, spots among them in fishing. I think one of the greatest ways in helping someone with fishing is to give them a piece of info and let them run with it and not dole out every last bit of detail. Help is good but it is at a time and place of one's choosing. This is fishing and not life or death.

Sometimes I have a hard time containing myself when I come across someone, especially when fishing, that acts as a horses ass or a sub level hack in the making. I don't want to come across as elitist as I think most that know me will agree that I'm not. In that particular case with a group of guys hammering brews more than blues I might respond in a less than pleasant, nurturing way. In similar situations I've dumbed down my technique (not much further to go though) not to give a bunch of hacks some hope.

I will go out of my way to help someone fishing that needs some help if it is a person realistically trying to catch and doing so in a smart and "fishing ethical" manner. If its a hack and a six pack, I'm less inclined to do it... And if the hack has had a few in them I have no desire to offer something that might enhance their success an keep them fishing, because I'm not up to pulling their drunk/buzzed a$$ out of the drink if it comes to that.

So while I think you got pig piled in that thread a little unjustly, I don't think Eben was Satan, the second coming.

If anyone can find a post of mine that asks for that kind of specific info, I'll write John R a check to cover this site's expenses for the next 10 years. How about you give me rough cost of expenses for 20 years and after the check clears I'll give you the site :hee:

I agree with J. R.'s assessment of Ebens reply. Devil he is not, tongue in cheek funny yes he is. Secretive also.

Some of us fish in spots and places that secracy has been brought to levels that even the c.i.a would admire, such as the Vineyard. Some of that can be funny and some not so. One night at the weigh in shack in Edgartown on the harbor everyone was paying attention to a young man who was at the most, ten years old. He was standing in a long line of fishermen who all had fish to weigh-in in the derby. He was dwarf in size to everyone else waiting. The anticipation built as the boys time to weigh his fish in came to pass. The line kept moving up closer to the table where the fish is first measured and then thrown onto the scale. While you stand in line you can listen to where everyone else says they caught their fish. The answers were either up-island or down-island. As far from exact or truthful while remaining polite as possible. It was an accepted practice. Some of the written stories aboiut trying to throw people of track and trail who were following you are ledgendary. Sometimes to throw people off you might actually tell the right end of the island you caught your fish. The little kid was with his dad and his dads friends. I'm sure the little boy had been schooled about what to say before the weighmaster took his fish and put it on the scales either from watching others at the weigh in or by what he had seen prior to this weigh in and he paid attention then. So the weighmaster takes the fish from this young man and says, "where did you catch it?" The boys reply was "up island." Everyone cracked up laughing knowing this nswer was far from the truth. That is about as close to the truth as it gets on the island. But the island is only a mircocosm of fishing everywhere else. I have learned to enjoy the hunt as much as catching the prey as I am sure everyone else does here also.

Swimmer, great post. That is how i operate... tounge in cheek, laughing all the way.. half of my posts on this board are meant to be humerous & sarcastic and half are serious..

I am a firm believer in the school of thought that no-one deserves all the answers, only hints and the ocasional bone... That is how my mentors taught me, and it took me years to learn how to fish where i fish.... If it took me years, why should i give someone the all the answers that took me years to learn??? Am I a sharpie?? no way... not by a longshot. ive still got a long long way to go...
