View Full Version : Can You Guys Believe How Crappy The Fishing Is This Year?
BigFish 06-26-2005, 12:02 PM Man it just sucks here in Mass.....I know I am not alone as I am hearing it from everywhere! I have been busting my arse and putting in lots of time and there are no fish to be found! The Cape is all but dead.....was just down there as were a couple other guys and it was skunksville! Even my local spots which are usually very consistent are not paying off!
beachwalker 06-26-2005, 12:29 PM are you fishing when the sun is shining bigfish ? ;)
we are happier this spring than last.
what are you giving them ?
BrianS 06-26-2005, 12:41 PM I agree... its been alot of el-skunko for me too...
Started having some decent luck south, but as for the cape in general... blah!
We killed on flounder today though.. that made me happy
basswipe 06-26-2005, 12:51 PM Down my way when its been good its been very good. When its been bad its been very bad.Its been 50/50 most of June.May was very good to me.
My fishing has been limited to a few select spots though because my truck finally died and its a pain in the a$$ to load and unload my girls' little Toyota car.
Bass Babe 06-26-2005, 02:00 PM Fishing at the Cape hasn't been bad for me yet this season, and I've been hearing some promising reports from others, to the effect of "this season is way better than last". Almost got skunked the other nite, but I managed to bring in an evil bluefish of doom. No keepers yet -- I haven't really been putting in my time like I should, now that I live 1.5 hours away. :smash:
basswipe 06-26-2005, 02:05 PM No keepers yet -- I haven't really been putting in my time like I should, now that I live 1.5 hours away. :smash:
I'm lucky I literally live a few seconds walk to some decent shoreline.
Gonna take that walk tonight after the race.
fishaholic18 06-26-2005, 02:14 PM Wow! That's weird, I'm having my best season yet. Got my biggest bass to date already.
cheferson 06-26-2005, 02:42 PM terrible the last few weeks :exp: . How big was the biggest fishaholic in your trophy stretch there the other week?
i don't really fish the outer cape all too much, but i just spent 2 weeks down there and for the amount of time i put in it was very disappointing. fished day and night for only 2 keepers  i heard there were some fish north of where i was but they moved very quickly supposedly. weird thing was i saw a good amount of bait(sand eels) but at night they were nowhere to be found. not sure if it was the moon or what. the seals definitely suck though, they follow you up and down the beach and set up shop in all the productive bars and holes. i did see fish everyday on the beach but they were very skittish, i'm guessing cause the seals were around. but who knows.
f-18-- me too
staltershoal 06-26-2005, 02:53 PM i agree, i do most of my fishing from shore around the fairhaven area and i got 1 keeper this year around the end of may. i mostly throw top water poppers and sometimes the pearl wild eye storm swimmers. i was getting quite a few smacks on top water in may not i get nothing top water. i have been getting real small stripers like 6-10 inch fish on the swimers.
now here is another theory that i have concaukted(sp?)
since there are so many menhaden around and since the moon has been so bright lately.. im thinking that the bass are filling up at night and just basking around during the day. but thats just my thought from what i have been seeing
also where are the blue fish. i have seen verry few in fairhaven area. they were chasing the menhaden but i havent seen the menhaden in close anymore
hope things get better!
BrianS 06-26-2005, 02:55 PM the BLOOOOFEESH are the one thing that I have not had a problem finding.
Codfather4 06-26-2005, 03:09 PM Thats funny, here on the south shore the fishing has been very good. A lot better than it was last year :kewl:
eelman 06-26-2005, 03:23 PM Because there all in Rhode Island  :kewl: this is the best spring I have ever seen,, almost everynight a fish at least in the high 20lb range and since may 23rd I have only missed 2 nights, Its just to good not to force myself out there everynight........... Dont worry its just been an unusually cold spring, the bass will be there before you know and we in Rhody will all be s#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g wind !
BigFish 06-26-2005, 03:58 PM Gotta love those rocks....right #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&? :kewl: Bassbabe and others doing well in Mass.....guessing most of you fish bait? Chunks, sandeels and the like? Yeah, you guys are doing well....but I would rather eat the sandeels and chunk bait myself than spike a rod and stare at it all day or night. Nothing wrong with it if thats what you like...all I am saying is its not my speed. I like to be more involved. :walk:
Slingah 06-26-2005, 04:13 PM think positive....plenty of fish around....its only crappy if you let it be
Karl F 06-26-2005, 04:32 PM Because there all in Rhode Island  :kewl:
True.... I know of 3 cape guys making the Rhody run 2 or 3 nights a week, bet there is a lot more than that!
vineyardblues 06-26-2005, 04:33 PM larry, jusy got to love them redsox :)

Squid kids Dad 06-26-2005, 04:55 PM I agree with Bigfish totally....Where have they gone? Or maybe they havent arrived yet...Hopefully...Even the Bluefish have been few and far between..I fish the southern part of the Cape...I got down to South Cape Beach sat morning around 4:30 a/m..Fished until 9:00...&^%& NADA..everything seemed perfect..Tide ,wind,dawn...NADA
Christian 06-26-2005, 05:16 PM much better than last year...i think...i am fishing 10X as much as i did last year though.
Vectorfisher 06-26-2005, 05:52 PM The chatter on channel 68 leads me to believe nothing is happening in Cape Cod Bay, my buddy caught 1 40# bass but in all honesty the fishfinder was not marking any fish and the spot we stopped in was just a stab and we only caught that 1. We have fished CCB in 4-5 different area's since and made 4 different trips and have only a couple of dinks to show for it.
CANAL RAT 06-26-2005, 05:55 PM i don't really fish the outer cape all too much, but i just spent 2 weeks down there and for the amount of time i put in it was very disappointing. fished day and night for only 2 keepers  i heard there were some fish north of where i was but they moved very quickly supposedly. weird thing was i saw a good amount of bait(sand eels) but at night they were nowhere to be found. not sure if it was the moon or what. the seals definitely suck though, they follow you up and down the beach and set up shop in all the productive bars and holes. i did see fish everyday on the beach but they were very skittish, i'm guessing cause the seals were around. but who knows.

sandeels dig into the bottom at night
Notaro 06-26-2005, 05:57 PM yeah, im catching blues all the time. i need to go to another state. also, its too humid outside now.
macojoe 06-26-2005, 05:59 PM Everyone knows there are no bass till July on Cape Cod, I don't even bother going to Chatam or above till mid July!
partsjay 06-26-2005, 06:10 PM I agree as of late....had an OK spring at some of my local spots..but I'm not seeing much action either....been fishing Fairhaven a few times...went to the Outer Cape...and the Canal...all in the last say 3 weeks.....not much to show for it. Hope it gets a little better out there....this weather has to help a little I would think.
Slingah 06-26-2005, 06:20 PM the fishing is okay....it's the catchin' that's slow :tooth:
beachwalker 06-26-2005, 07:00 PM I still don't get it.
WHAT are you guys showing them ?
fishing is so much better this year than last.
Do you folks move around or pick one spot and park there ?
BigFish 06-26-2005, 07:31 PM BW....I fish maybe 6 or eight different spots.....changing up always. I think I spend too much time trying to pick the "perfect" time/tide/moon phase and to tell you the truth I think thats all BS......the fishing is only as good in any one spot/at any time/tide/moon phase as when the fish are there. I am going back to just going fishing and letting what ever happens, happen! No more tide checking, no more moon phase checking....just gonna go and get back to basics. I have had my best times fishing that way and since I began micro managing everything it has been terrible! :exp:
Goose 06-26-2005, 07:33 PM With water temps only getting warmer, go the extra mile(or more;)). I know its hard with job & family commitments and all,,, but those who realy want to find LARGE need to find deeper colder currents.

Good to hear BF because the same thing happened to me last year. Started fishing with a friend who would always tell me about this spot or that spot and how it used to be at this tide on that moon on this day. My productivity evaporated. I tactfully went back to my old style. I definetly pay attention to tide cycles and wind/baro pressure but didn't micro manage or bullshiite it too much and I was right back on track.
Not that I was slaying 40+ #'ers but I was hitting the 15-30 lb fish that I had been for the past decade.
The reason I ask those questions is because this year has been good. I wonder if it is because the fish are farther south in my neighborhood or whatever. I don't know. I have had my off nights but they were still fun.
I am sad to hear some are struggling to find the fish.
Keep plugging away and don't be afraid to change your old standby plugs and learn how to swim new ones. The surf howdies i got from Joe last year have been the BEST producing plug thus far :walk:

nightfighter 06-26-2005, 08:00 PM Skunked again from the surf today 0500 to 0730
Out on boat with two kids and fresh herring 1200 to 1500 nada
Tourney going on up this way, maybe fifty boats fishing, saw only two small fish landed, both in the white water up tight by fly rodders.
Back out tomorrow for sunrise
CANAL RAT 06-26-2005, 08:43 PM the bass are starting to set into there summer patterns the only way to catch a good sized bass is either get a boat or fish at night. i usually start chunking and eeling this time of the year
Bass Babe 06-26-2005, 09:24 PM Gotta love those rocks....right #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&? :kewl: Bassbabe and others doing well in Mass.....guessing most of you fish bait? Chunks, sandeels and the like? Nothing wrong with it if thats what you like...all I am saying is its not my speed. I like to be more involved. :walk:
Big, I wouldn't touch bait with a ten foot pole. It would make me AND my car smell horrendous. Chunking is not my speed, either, thank you. Although I won't be snotty about people who have a good time doing it. They can fish however they want, and I won't blame any lack of catching on my part on the fact that I choose to fish in a "more involved" manner. Don't assume that all I do is have my boyfriend bait my line and daintily toss it out into the water. Not my speed...bah. :lossinit:
BigFish 06-26-2005, 09:36 PM Kudos to you Bassbabe on passing on rod-watching! :kewl: Hope my comment did not offend you it was not meant that way. What is your preferred method of fishingBB? You may ball me BF. ;) I did not mean to sound as though I was belittling you.
Goose 06-26-2005, 09:42 PM Its respectable to throw eels but when a guy dunks chunks he's goin ta hell.
A monkey can throw an eel a reel it in,,,give guy props for catchin when everyone else is pipping. People get the wrong idea about fishin ...its just bassassbackwards:smash:
BigFish 06-26-2005, 09:45 PM Not ripping anyones method of fishing Goose....its just that I hate bait dunking.....its the devils way! :devil2:

Notaro 06-26-2005, 10:28 PM chunking makes ur hands smell, right, larry?

eelman 06-27-2005, 01:07 AM She tosses little cute little rebels
Rob Rockcrawler 06-27-2005, 01:22 AM This year has been better than last so far. Ive only gotten skunked once this year. By this time last year i was into a lot of blues and unfortunatly i have yet to lose an eel or a dozen to them.
Their all still in NJ.Huge pods of bunker an constant south winds from the deeper waters keepin the temps in the low 60's an the bass hangin around.in the last 2 weeks many fish over 30 have been taken the boats are just killin em an us surf guys get em when the push in.50 # plus fish seem to be more scarce this yr.I know of only a few. The last 2 yrs many where taken.
Don't make me come up there an spank ur fish.I may stop in RI an beat up on the striped ones there first.
ThrowingTimber 06-27-2005, 05:49 AM :sled: I've been seeing a good sized increase in :ss: 's that are from Mass. Usually you see the increase later in the season. But there are noticeably more :ss: 's out here now. :kewl:
Dunno why sooo much traffic.. there aint no fish in RI. :faga:
MakoMike 06-27-2005, 06:16 AM You guysa are kidding right? The week before last there were 6 fish over 50 lbs weighed in in RI and this past week, there were three 50lb plus fish, just on Sunday! The first three places in the ASA tourney went to 50 pound plus fish.
ThrowingTimber 06-27-2005, 07:09 AM aint no fish hea!
iluvspots 06-27-2005, 07:43 AM Big, I wouldn't touch bait with a ten foot pole. It would make me AND my car smell horrendous.
A shpritz of Chanel #5 helps a lot. :faga:
i can't complain. not one bit.
although I did go on a fluke charter [bachelor party] on saturday and out of 15 people, we caught one short and a skate. Although only 8 or 9 of us were really fishing hard... the rest.... :buds: :gu: :smokin: :yak4:
So to some up, striper fishing = good, fluking = bad.

Mr. Sandman 06-27-2005, 07:55 AM Your not fishing MV are you? My take is bass fishing is pretty good in MA. We didn't get the big spring wave of fish where it was really hot for a week then a slow pick afterwards but there are plenty of fish around from the beach. Instead, it has been more of a steady trickle of fish this year. With new fish arriving each week. I have had a good number of fish > 20# and my largest so far was 42.5 this season. Lots of smaller fish just over the keeper marks as well to keep it interesting. We are getting fish almost every night. Somenights are better then others. Only a couple of what I would call really excellent nights but its been fine IMO. Boat guys are doing very well with loads of 30's and 40's on live scup.
If you want bass you need to fish nights. Spend time with your family during the day...there will be plenty of time for sleep when you are dead (or go back to work :hee: )
fishweewee 06-27-2005, 08:16 AM Your not fishing MV are you?
Sandman (and Beachwalker) ...
MV and Nantucket are striper disneylands.
They are not the hit-or-miss worlds of the Cape, RI, and Long Island (noticed I left out CT cuz that's mostly "miss.").
I have NEVER gone to MV/N and not caught fish, even during crappy Wx.
I would gladly give my left nut to have a shack where you guys are fishing right now. :faga:
Mr. Sandman 06-27-2005, 08:30 AM FWW..keep both your nuts. Fishing ain't **that** great. :hee:
Fishing is pretty good along the cape too right now. Was in falmouth this weekend and the bar tender was telling telling his friend just how hot the action was in the woods hole area from the shore at 8:00pm at night. "blues all day and bass most of the night" was his quote. I never said a thing just listened. Now I don't know this guy but he clearly was catching something and reading all the reports (fisherman, OTW, etc) it sounds like it is pretty good.
Moses 06-27-2005, 08:37 AM So far, this season has been disappointing. I've had the boat in the water since early April and fished northern ri and souther ma hard. Not many fish and none bigger than 36".
Late May thru today, have fished Buzzards Bay, MV, Nantucket Sound, sshore ma and cape cod bay. Again, not many fish and mostly smaller. Biggest fish so far was taken friday morning in Plymouth/Duxbury bay, 37".
The canal has been the biggest disappointment this year. I'm still heading down before work and some nights since early May. A couple small keepers and plenty of skunks.
Caught a handful of blues off some south cape beaches while on vacation last week in Mashpee. This was my most productive week. Blues every morning and night from shore, nothing bigger than 5lbs though.
Lets hope things improve.
BasicPatrick 06-27-2005, 08:40 AM I am fishing 4-6 days per week in MA right now...a lot of small 1-2 hour trips and catching keepers just about every trip for the last couple weeks...
and by the way...8 out of 10 trips are from shore
keep fishin BF..it will come
reelecstasy 06-27-2005, 08:45 AM For me personally, I am having one of the best starts to a season ever. I have only took the skunk home a few times so far. I have been fortunate enough to find fish just about everywhere I have gone. This past weekend, I hit 8 spots form south shore MA to the south Cape beaches I found fish at each spot. I hit a bunch of blues and a keepah down the cape and picked up shorts the rest of the time. I also sad to say dropped 2 really good fish but thats fishing. So, all in all I find it to be a good start to the season and if the start is indicative of the season to come, I can't wait for the fall run...not that I want to rush thru summer... Get out there and fish :ss:
likwid 06-27-2005, 09:28 AM telling his friend just how hot the action was in the woods hole area from the shore at 8:00pm at night.
8pm?
it starts at 6am and ends at 5:59am the next morning.
slack deep in the rocks sat night was amazing.
the area harbors have more schoolies than you can shake a stick at.
MakoMike 06-27-2005, 10:43 AM Zac,
Three of us had 14 fluke on saturday with two in the five pound range and one that went seven and a half pound on a certified scale.
You guysa are kidding right? The week before last there were 6 fish over 50 lbs weighed in in RI and this past week, there were three 50lb plus fish, just on Sunday! The first three places in the ASA tourney went to 50 pound plus fish.
can't speak for everyone else but my reply was directed towards cape fishing, which i do very little of . rhody has been very good to me this year, having my best season ever so far. :hee:
S-Journey 06-27-2005, 01:54 PM Yes, the fishing has been terrible this year, but I suspect it is only my 7 month old daughter causing that :-)
RIROCKHOUND 06-27-2005, 02:25 PM E.. you and me both; got your VM, I'll catch ya at some point..
This spring so far for me, the fish havent been where I THINK they should, I think they are around, but just aint been where I was fishing....

Canalman 06-27-2005, 02:34 PM :faga:
BrianS 06-27-2005, 03:41 PM Ive been a believer in the intangibles when it comes to fishing for awhile now.
There is a certain x-factor that some people have that others do not. Its something that goes beyond skill and knowledge. Its that thing that if there are 5 guys in a line using the same bait the same way, the person with the most x-factor outfishes the rest.
I thought after last year, I had it, but apparantley, this year, I do not. It must come and go, ebb and flow like the tide. Granted I am only behind two keepers on last years talley, overall count I am probably a few dozen back.
Call it what you will, x-factor, mojo, @#$ luck, I dunno...
MakoMike 06-27-2005, 04:05 PM Remember the old saw? 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish. Its true.
cheferson 06-27-2005, 04:07 PM I got a 20lber last night. 20lb furry raccoon that has been tearing apart the kitchen at work. Its definatly been sloooowww lately :crying:

of 37 trips at night I have only got the skunk ONCE !!
macojoe 06-28-2005, 09:59 AM ZAC "So to some up, striper fishing = good, fluking = bad."

I will agree that Fluke are slow this year, but I have been fishing for them 3 trips now and I have gotten 50 to 60 fish each trip.
I guess you will have to chatter my boat :heybaby:
Bass are hot one day cold another, But I have been doing just fine, Just check the freezer
devils fiddle 06-28-2005, 10:36 AM Fishing in the watch hill, BI, and fishless CT areas is on fire. have gotten several fish over 40lbs in the last three weeks. Maybe a fifty soon? there a little late this year but big. Fished vineyard sound over the weekend, several fish to 25lbs. but none bigger. Live bait only in all areas.
:devil2:

scottiehamma 06-28-2005, 05:09 PM not sure if this was brought up yet. don't have much variety for locations but i think the harsh storms we've had early in the year have changed the structure of the shoreline. so we've got to do more scouting.
fish are definately out there in mass. i've had my best spring yet, but only been fishing seriously for a few years.
north of boston has been treating me okay. nothing spectacular, but better than average.
I have a friend thats not really that good of a fisherman.thats up there an he's beatin on em.Said he talked to some guys up there that have never seen it so good.Maybe U need to go back a few steps.
schoolie monster 07-01-2005, 01:06 PM BF, I thought things were fairly slow up until this past weekend. I was finding small fish inside the harbor on plastics, but I wasn't finding any good fish inside or out. I've been getting a few keeper sized fish, but nothing great.
I had my dad up last week and my uncle up on Monday. Sun/Mon we got a much better class of fish up into the 20# range. Sun we got some good quality teen fish... Mon would have been one of my better days if my uncle and I hadn't dropped 4 straight good fish, 2 of which were mid 20# range.
I saw alot of fish too.
I bet things pick up for you, cause some fish have definitely moved in.
Good luck.
BigFish 07-01-2005, 01:41 PM Thanks Schoolie Monster....good to hear your gettin' some! :)
Notaro 07-01-2005, 09:17 PM fishing season wasnt bad for me this year. i got about 20 or more schoolies on a owner 1/4 oz darting jighead with a wite or olive sluggo and fished on barnstable harbor. also chunked for fluke and caught a 22 in fat schoolie and released it. no flukes this year... im so pissed. i need my keeper!!! arrgggg...
RickBomba 07-02-2005, 09:10 AM Best year of fishing for me ever!!!
Lots o topwater action.
Had to buy split ring pliers for the first time last week cause they keep demolishing my trebles!!!
Mikey's doing better than me!!!
Later,
Rick
Karl F 07-02-2005, 11:41 AM Met your bro Mikey one evening at the Race... wasn't too fishy for anybody that night.. he said we missed ya, something ta do with too many Sparks ;)
Watch that stuff, there's something in there that will cause chemical imbalances :hihi:
RickBomba 07-02-2005, 12:44 PM Yup, I couldn't buy a fish that day.
I did, however, catch quite the buzz. :rotf2:
Mikeys got pics to come.
Later,
rICK
schoolie monster 07-02-2005, 11:46 PM The fish have definitely gotten more plentiful... I grabbed a nice 23#er this morning and dropped another fish a bit smaller at the boat. 7 other keepers out of 22 fish on herring and plastics, but they were all about 30", so not big but fun.
Had an interesting situation. When I got the 23#er, I had two baits out and both got smashed at the same time. I hooked both fish using circles, but had to leave one in the rod holder. I hope I picked the right fish cause the other fish got off.
The nicer fish were on the first drift early am. I'm thinkin' I need to take some eels some morning so I don't spend time catching bait. That's probably my best shot at a lunker.
ridler72 07-03-2005, 08:13 PM Nothing stable around the Winthrop area as well. Atleast for me. One day a 31lber the next skunk. One day a dozen 10-15 lbers the next day or night nothing. Last year, July, August and until the first nor'easter showed cows on every couple of trips. That was a good year. Hoping for the same this year. I still talk to New Jersey folk who are having their way with cows. Lets hope for the best. :kewl:
This is the time for trolling eels for me. Sonic booms from this weekends fireworks curbed my enthuisiasm for night runs in the yak.
I hope next week, peace in quiet and the new moon all play into big fish.

its true, i gotta agree with you on that. BTW, i caught a fat 25 in bass and on a BM needles last night and released it last night.
