2001 yamaha 115 hp.... 2 stroke......

ran great all day.... packed up to head in and only got 3000 rpms at full throttle..... took it out of gear and gave it gas and RPMS went up no problems..... put back in gear and still only goes 3000 rpms at 8-10 mph..... No sputtering, and Not over heating ????

Looking for possible problems before I go looking for a mechanic.... also ... do these engines have some sort of fail safe system that only allows them to go 3000 rpms ?

Like BigBo said earlier check out the prop hub first. Din't need to be a mechanic to do that one.

ask on www.iboats.com.
under forums, in the yamaha section.
TONS of info there.

Before you do ANY further testing, veify that you have gear oil in the leg....

Before you do ANY further testing, veify that you have gear oil in the leg.... Exactly right.

Then check prop hub, then lower unit gears......IMO

Doubt it's the prop hub, engine would race and boat wouldn't move fast. I'm sure they have some sort of fail safe system that limis rpm when there's a problem. I'd also make sure the linkage is pulling the throttle all the way open on the engine.

Agree not the hub, the engine would race.

The newer OBs have overheat and low oil S.L.O.W. (Speed Limiting Overheat) sensors, that will not let the engine go over a certain RPM, I picked up a trash bag on the LU and the SLOW kicked in, saved the powerhead !!!

Check there is enough oil or that the sensor is OK if you got plenty of oil.

Good Luck
Let us know....

After reading HR post again I agreee probably not the Hub. Like guys have said you'd have high rpms but wouldn't be moving fast.

check for a fouled plug. 3000RPM's seem to high for a fail safe system.

Same thing happened to my buds 150 Johnson, but the plug wire was just loose, I plugged it back in and he was back in business. Those are the best fixes.
