Are all that! Finally gave in to all the hype and tried one as a teaser. Teeny piece of rubber lookin' sandeel thing. First cast using a yellow darter as the delivery vehicle I was hooked up. Kept hooking up until I noticed my right rear tire was going flat :exp: Freakin' valve core was stuck. Anyway, I resisted spending the money ( kinda pricey IMHO) too long. Give it a try.

BBJ.. got metal caps? get a set of 4 with the valvestem removal tool... stuck valve usually just needs a loosen/tighten to free it up, carry some spares just in case tho.... metal caps usually have a real good rubbah gasket inside 'em, at 15# or less of air, crank it on tight and it'll hold for a good long while, if ya can't stop the air pissin out, or cant get the valve out and replaced :kewl:

Red Gills slay fish. They have saved me the skunk many of nights when the fish wanted nothing to do with wood. They arent that expensive if you buy them not in the package. I think they are .75$ at the shop I work at.

I cannot extoll the virtues of Red Gills enough. It's a bit annoying when the hook backs up in the body and you have to reposition your little guy every other cast, but you won't see me complaining when I'm catching. Where is this place you speak of with 75 cent Red Gills, RR?

I wonder if you would do just as well with a bucktail teaser ? They're alot cheaper if you tie em yourself and its not hard to do.

I tied up a bunch to take on a week long trip, some were just white with silver flash on the top, others were dark on top & white on the bottom. I fished them for the whole week, and I caught as many fish on the teasers as on the plugs.

I also had nights where only the teaser caught...

I do think that they do have a down side. If you get into a school of mixed size fish and you are fishing a teaser, it seems that you will consistantly get the smaller fish. I'm not sure why that is (I do have my theories) but that was my experience...

Wrap a little tape around the RedGill hook shank so it fits tighter in the RedGill and the hook will not slip.

In my experience, the Redgil outfishes the bucktail. I have lost a redgil teaser, said, hey why not try one of my hand tied bucktails, or this sweet fly steelhead gave me, and they would not produce like the redgil. switch back to the redgil, and wham! back into them. BUT, I can't seem to catch anything bigger than 10# on redgils.

I caught my first ever keeper on a red gill this year, needless to say, I am a believer. Like Riverrat said, they have saved me some skunks also. That said, the few schoolies I have caught in the past few weeks took the mambo minnow and NOT the red gill, go figure.

A few falls ago now at Race Pt. blowing hard out of the northeast, a white Red Gill using a 4 ounce bank sinker and drag it over the bottom, bass to 30 lbs. The fishing was good in the big surf, few days later after thinks calm down couldn't buy a bite.

Fred, I never leave home without 'em. Last fall down by the ol' Mission Bell I had two good nights. Black/blue Yozuri Darter and Black Silver 4inch Red Gill, most of the fish took the gill. I got fifty or so left from the old days, four inch always was best for me no matter how big the fish though the sixes had thier moments specially down on Karl's beach. I was using them this Monday night down yer way cept when there ain't no fish nothin bites on 'em. ;)

Since 2004 they are my go to lure. I have a secret way of presenting them that is better and more fun than using them as a teaser. Good tip about the tape as I was looking to correct that.

The funny thing was, I wasn't a teaser fisher until then. I'd tried bucktails and some homemades and refused to believe that that cheap looking overpriced piece of plastic could be much better. With the wind in my face I got a real crappy first cast.... And I was on. The next was better and I was on. The hits that I blew, I could see fish chasing the teaser. There were others there and I didn't see them catching like I was. The more I think about those thing the more I think that witchcraft is involved. Now I'm not trying to sell these things, I'm just relating what happened to me.

I really doubt there are .75 Red Gills out there...but if there is please post the place because thats less than what I pay wholesale in 500 quantities.

Found some of the knockoff redgills when I was out fishing one day. Seem identical to the redgill except the plastic is not as supple and they say GILLY back near the tail. Haven't used em' so I can't say anything about performance. Wish I could find more 5 1/2" redgills down to my last 2, catching doubles is a blast.

I love them red gills. They have also saved my nights many times. funny storie about them, last year I was using one up infront of a beachmaster when I got hammerd. The fish felt heavy but fought strange. After 20 minutes I beached the bass. Now this was one of those dark nights so all I could see was the head beached and the tail moving back about 60 inches. talkabout craping your self I thought I had my monster, but it just ended up being two 30+in fish laying over each other one grabbed the gill the other the danny. im such an idiot sometimes.

For the 4.5", I use Mustad 34007 2/0

i got a triple of blue fish while using a red gill.

2 on plug, front hook, back hook, one on the gilly. rolling on the beach laughing.

gill came off 2 seconds after i found those fish were blues.

Yup I believe it that is what they were made for in England. They are awesome, definetly increases your chances of hooking up.

The knock off Gillys don't have the hole in the tail, either. They don't swim right.
