View Full Version : Dogfish July Blues...
Sgt_Nutz 07-17-2005, 06:11 PM Left the Sandwitch ramp around 5:30am, said hi to Nelson from Red Top launching a brand spanking new boat. Little bit of a crowd but everyone seemed patient and things went unusually smooth. Nothing doing at Scorton Ledge or Barnstable Harbor area so gave Billingsgate area a try. Gotta be something there what with the hole fleet of boats... First cut mackeral wasnt in the water 30 seconds and bang...dogfish. Hmmm, tried again and same thing. Ok, one more w/no weight.....dogfish#3. Well, maybe try the bottom, big 4oz bucktail. Tap, tap tap but no hookup. Fluke? Tried a 1oz bucktail and landed dogfish#4. Gave up on that and trolled an umbrella rig. One single blue and then 3 at once. Kinda taxing on the small Jigmaster....and tough on the plastic.... Tried Scorton Ledge again on the way in and landed another dogfish. How did everyone else fair?
Was anyone able to get into the Bass today?
ProfessorM 07-17-2005, 08:03 PM I have seen nary a boat all last week from scorton, parking lot, fingers and everything to Billingsgate. Last few years it has been mobed. Thought I went comm. a week too early it was so deserted. I tried places the last few years that have been good to me in those areas and a few bass but mostly blues or nutin. Everyone that was fishing was over at Billingsgate and north. Got to like full combat fishing over there. I like to find my own fish but did not fair to well. The dog's make fishing any kind of bait hard. This is the time of year you can see schools the size of football fields of surface swimming dogs in CC Bay in the morning. Just got to hope for a change or join the crowd. Paul
ProfessorM 07-20-2005, 06:20 PM Fished Billingsgate all day today. 3 small blues and that was it. Did not see a bass landed and there was 100 plus boats. Guy's are getting a few jigging but I didn't see them. Pretty depressing. Slowest I have seen it in several years. Lots of whining on the radio. So bad I am not even going to bother tomorrow. Weather was beautiful though. Hope you all are doing better than me. If you see me coming turn and run. Nothing but bad luck this season so far. Paul
Sgt_Nutz 07-20-2005, 10:53 PM Sorry about the luck. I am sure it will turn around. I still havnt been out since Sunday. That was my first trip to B-Gate. 100 plus boats on a weekday? How was the ramp? Maybe I'll try diving until things pick up.
My brother-in-law's girlfriends father (????) is supposedly doing well somewhere off P-town in the daylight. B n'law isnt very interested and I havnt been able to get any info. Never been there. Cant go out again (work n' kids) until Friday am or the weekend.
ProfessorM 07-21-2005, 04:17 PM The ramp was fine at Barnstable, dead I'd say, only 10 boats out because there are no, zero , fish off of Sandy neck to Billingsgate. I didn't see any boats from Scorton all the way to Billingsgate. I would imagine they are using ramps over toward Sesuit and up to P-town. Also a lot of guys go out of Sandwich. What kind of boat is Nelson got now I was looking for his Proline and could not find it . The guy, your brother in law's father's etc., is probably jigging. They are getting them that way. That is what the majority of boats are using now. Guess I got to join the crowd. Paul
Rappin Mikey 07-21-2005, 09:00 PM Yeterday I went out on the other side, hammered um all day, all stripers, all on top. I saw two other boats the whole day. Fish up to 20#.
macojoe 07-22-2005, 09:57 AM The bay sucks this time of year!!
If you must fish there then you need to get there at night just before dawn,
Wire line till sun up
after that go home you are done for the day!!
You want fish, you need to go to the other side of the world!!
humphrys 07-22-2005, 10:51 AM Hi,
I left Waquoit and went out by Noman's yesterday. On the way, stopped between Cuttyhunk and Gay Head and caught a some fluke.
Continued around the South side of the Vinyard and my son got a 39" Stripper on eel. Very nice fish. We also got 1 very large sea bass and some hugh
scup. All this and I only used 100 gals of gas.

Sgt_Nutz 07-22-2005, 12:47 PM Just back from Plymouth. Out to Farnhams Rock and back. Alot of time sight seeing and looking for shells in between too. One dogfish and one blue. 9 year old daughter caught both(with a little help) so it was worth it. Not even the schoolies are around Plymouth though. Gonna have to get myself to the "other side" I think. Diving is looking better all the time though.
Mr. Sandman 07-22-2005, 04:58 PM I am working on dogfish recipies...I predict, like the lobster once was considered a trash species, that someday these dogfish will be in huge demand. So in the mean time I am trying to find a way to eat them....so far sushi does not cut it :yak4:
As far as fishing goes...
I went to the hooter and got a gazillion bluefish, 2 bonito, two 20# bass, and lost a small football, just trolling yo-zuri's and deep divers on a flat calm morning. No dogfish! (There have been showing of school bluefins there but it is a right time right place kind of thing.) Cayon guys are kicking butt with awesome yellowfin if you have the boat for it.
fishdog13 07-22-2005, 06:21 PM ya the bay suck's :wid:
capecodder 07-25-2005, 03:14 PM Was out at Billingsgate the 20th as well. Jigging, umbrellas, live eels. A couple of blues, lots of dogs and skates (on jigs). Sux reeling in 300 feet of wire to find a skate.
More boats out there than cars on Rte 6. Tough day.
