View Full Version : The gas factor
eelman 07-19-2005, 01:32 PM Ok for me its at the point where You can now call me cheap! Many places I want to fish I simply wont go, the gas is crazy, is it now at a point where it has affected you? and are you staying closer to home? Cape trips will now be a luxery and a car pool effort to offset the gas..What does a night of fishing cost you?
So its no joke anymore, The gas prices have definatly keeped me closer to home and I have not left gansett yet! exept once to go to the cape. Even Block which I love is a big ticket item now, you need a full tank of gas $60 bucks A ferry ride with car $125 round trip eels $40 man its $200 bucks without making a cast!! Thankfully I am getting fish but it is possible I could do better by branching out however at the price now, I am not about to leave them to find them........
Homerun04 07-19-2005, 01:49 PM It has caused me to take less trips on my boat for sure.........
spence 07-19-2005, 01:53 PM I don't really care about gas prices, I'm independently wealthy

Glad someone is! I am certainly not rich
partsjay 07-19-2005, 02:09 PM While I will admit that gas is through the roof right now.....with the amount of money that I spend on plugs, lathes, drill presses.ect..ect....and the amount of fish that I have NOT caught....I would drive as far as I need to catch some fish.....but that's just me....I'm starting to doubt myself...don't think I could catch a decent fish no matter where I was fishing. :wall: :wall:
BrianS 07-19-2005, 02:17 PM Ive cut down a wee bit... but my longest trip is usually only the canal... If I go anywhere else I am car/truckpooling, so it hasnt been that bad.
blue oyster 07-19-2005, 02:23 PM with the price of gas ,oil , bait, and lack of fish i think its costing me about $50:00 per pound of fish i catch , will it slow me down , no ,but it sure is frustrating . its a long winter in these parts got to get the fishing in when you can
hasnt slowed me down- i have simply stopped buying food and diapers for my 11 month old son :hihi:
The Dad Fisherman 07-19-2005, 02:35 PM hasnt slowed me down- i have simply stopped buying food and diapers for my 11 month old son :hihi:
He's almost 1 its time he learned to fend for himself......I don't buy that whole "can't walk, can't talk, can't take care of myself thing" anyways.
i have noticed less people out fishing in popular spots in my neck of the woods, but i have also noticed alot more people food fishing for scup.
ThrowingTimber 07-19-2005, 02:59 PM still driving the same if not more
Sweetwater 07-19-2005, 03:24 PM I'm trying to not let it effect my fishing...but Sunday a dragged my boat 2 hours to get to a launching spot where I knew there were fish. Then I drove the boat for 8 hours. Then 2 hours back in the truck. Probably burned between truck and boat about 30 and 35 gallons.
So yeah...I'm starting to think about it.
striprman 07-19-2005, 03:36 PM The necessities of life come before play.
I consider fishing a necessity.

It's entirely possible that I'm stretching the truth a wee bit :as:

outfished 07-19-2005, 04:00 PM I'm still driving the truck as much as usual and fishing probably more than ever. But what I have done is borrow/stay at friends homes near the ocean and basically get to stay there for free instead of paying for hotels like I've done in the past. Either way, gas prices bite but I shouldn't complain too much, my Dad in Canada is paying $4.00 per gallon :(
Bass Babe 07-19-2005, 10:51 PM When I drive my fishmobile, it takes a half a tank to get to the Cape and back -- 3 hours round trip. So there's $12. Some days I wish I had a bigger car, but the gas mileage rocks on my little Escort. Adding up the fast food and gas station snacks and new toys from the tackle shop, I'd say I spend under $50 per trip. I wouldn't be too upset if it costed more, though. Money is no object to me, as long as I can pay my bills.
Raider Ronnie 07-20-2005, 05:53 AM I paid $3.15 a gal at Brewers Marine in Plymouth last Sun. for gas in my boat,
The most i have ever paid for gas in my life!!!
But i got a good up close veiw of the Mayflower and Plymouth rock while I filled up!!!
If memory serves me, gas was around 85 cents when I first got my drivers lic.
I miss those days of spending $5 bucks to fill the tank in my car!!!
afterhours 07-20-2005, 05:58 AM :humpty: The necessities of life come before play.

Gas money is not a problem but time is......
schoolie monster 07-20-2005, 07:15 AM I spent $50 at the pump for the first time the other day. It even affected me in the spring when I usually do some fishing at the cape and it wasn't even this high yet.
When you think about spending that much to go fishing, its not that I won't fish, but I would fish closer to home.
Now truthfully, I'm pretty much fishing local out of the boat. The honda is good on gas so its not a big expense. But I had been thinking of checking out the cape some more this year, even trailering down to monomoy. No chance. I'll stick it out in Boston Harbor.
Saltheart 07-20-2005, 09:58 AM I have become more conscious of things like running to lowes , etc. instead of multiple trips at the drop of a hat , i try to plan just one trip where I get everything at once. i also notice this for going to tackle shops for rod building supplies. I just put it off till i'm going there anyway for fishing.
as far as actual fishing , the trips have been so few and far between this year that when I get a chance to go , gas doesn't even figure into it.
piemma 07-20-2005, 10:44 AM I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't gamble. I don't chase women except the one I've been married to for 37 years. So I spend a few bucks more on gas. I get 20 miles to the gallon. it's a 110 mile round trip to Narrangansett.
So let's see: 5.5 gallons per trip X $2.00 per gallon last year = $11.00 per trip
5.5 gallons per trip X $2.50 per gallon this year = $13.75 per trip
So it cost me $2.75 more per trip this year than last. I fish about 5 nights a week X $2.75 more per week = $13.75. I am sure that a sixpack must cost about that. Since I don't drink so that's my beer money. :claps:
spence 07-20-2005, 10:46 AM Don't worry Paul, what happens in Gansett stays in Gansett :hihi:

piemma 07-20-2005, 10:47 AM It had better..... :nailem: :nailem: :nailem: :nailem: :nailem:
...it's a 110 mile round trip to Narrangansett.
woah. i have been on here [s-b.com] quite a bit over the past year, and from reading your posts, I would have bet $100 that you were from 'gansett by the amount you fish there. or no farther than warwick. wow. impressive.

RIROCKHOUND 07-20-2005, 01:15 PM Paul ends up fishing gansett more than I do and I live smack in the middle of town 200yds from the water...
piemma 07-20-2005, 01:39 PM Thanks Zacs. I actually live just about as far from Narragansett as you can and still be in RI. I live in Burrillville. :hihi:
paul you should move down heya.
Christian 07-20-2005, 01:54 PM i also do a 100 mile round trip each time. this is really my first year driving, fishing for trout was cool, i could fish 7 days a week without a refill.
its now 1/2 a tank per trip. its killing me.
and mostly just schoolies....UGH.
Pete F. 07-20-2005, 02:04 PM It's not just the gas for fishing. I drive 400 miles a week b4 fishing and a trip to MeNHMa doubles that so gas is costing me fishing time period.
piemma 07-20-2005, 03:10 PM paul you should move down heya.

Love to in a couple of years. My wife is still involved with the school system here.

I've been going to the outer cape just about every weekend since May (except last weekend). To RP and back costs me about 45 bux. That and the 80 I was spending when I was working in Kingston got really expensive. Working 1- 1/2 miles from home now has been a blessing. The trips to the outer cape will be easier. :spin:
beamie 07-20-2005, 08:28 PM I still lug 34 Gal at a time from the self serve at 2.36 instead of the Marinas at $3+.......Lately the boat is costing me about $100 a day for a trip far away. :ast year it cost me $57 to fill my 5 gas jugs. Now it is $81. That is a pretty good jump.

Joh,
Is you're boat diesel or gas?
I like you're boat by the way, I REALLY like it if it's diesel!!!
beamie 07-22-2005, 08:03 PM Ronnie,
Unfortunately it is gas. Someday, maybe someday when it gives up the ghost I'll repower with diesel, but she's running like pissa. But hopefully by then I'll be in something I like more if the price is right. Yanmar makes that 4 cyl 240 HP for 17K sure would be a nice fit for that boat but the word "Yanmar" doesn't always impress me. Too many stories of dropped valves etc. we'll see.
Hooper 07-23-2005, 05:45 AM Fuel prices have definitely put a damper on my fishing this year. Used to run to Monomoy in the boat and not give it a thought, this year, I ahven't been once. My wife and I are doing lots of fluke fishing outside of the river...
Actually given a lot of thought to downsizing from the 23' Seacraft to a 17 Stagepoint with a four stroke.

BigBo 07-23-2005, 06:12 AM Not the only reason, but certainly one of the reasons why I've gone to a much smaller boat.
macojoe 07-23-2005, 08:37 AM BigBo Not the only reason, but certainly one of the reasons why I've gone to a much smaller boat.
Yea a, puddle jumper!!
I have so many problems at home that I have not used my boat more then 6 times all year!! :crying: So it hasn't mattered.
But I like to fish the Vinyard, and thats about 40 miles, 11 mpg, round trip in the truck, Then for a day at sea I use about 18 gal gas. 18 + 4 = 22 gal X $2.34 = $51.48
we won't go into the rest of the stuff!!
I had a friend say to me, Must be nice to get all that free fish!!, It cost alot in the store!!
FREE :laughs: gas, oil, cost of boat, repairs, new trailer, rods, reels, tackle, ect ect ect I must pay $500 a pound!!
CowHunter 07-23-2005, 11:54 AM The Gas Prices really suck! It is a big expense for me, My truck takes 44 Gallons and burns 10-12 MPG. My boat takes 90 Gallons and is pretty efficient burning 3-4 MPG and it puts a dent. My fuel bill per week is a minimum of $400.00. Cant cry about it and wont let it hurt my fishing, just gotta deal with it. Doesnt look like there is any relief in sight....
redlite 07-23-2005, 03:16 PM Have mostly been fishing the boat (comm season) and now that I have relocated and found decent fish close to home without having to deal with the damn seals, it has been a little easier. I think about it every night weather or not to make the haul to the cape due to gas, especially since I'm not working.
The thing that is really affecting me is how gas prices are affecting every thing else. Eels have gone up every where due to gas costs going up to transport them to the shops.
I need lessons on how to rig up the 30+ dead eels I have in the future mother in laws freezer.
riverrat2 07-23-2005, 05:00 PM Gas sucks. My jeep costs about 50$$ to fill and i only get about 200 miles of driving. But I will still be going down to the cape as much as possible as long as there are fish.
Backbeach Jake 07-23-2005, 05:54 PM My old sand sled would be s#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g fumes after the Clinton-Truro run. Another tank for the beach, another for the ride home, another for the commute that week! It was a great truck( still is) but the Jimmy is a Godsend. When I started pumping gas at Duarte's in P-town back in the 1900's Regular was 39.9 and Premium was 43.9 a gallon! I can't believe it's 3 bucks a gallon more now!
lurch 07-23-2005, 05:54 PM I cant complain...I live 6 miles from work so I save there. If I only use the truck for work I can get a months worth of trips to the office and back.
I get about 18mpg in the 5.3L v8 so it isnt that bad...I get about 330-350 miles in my tank.
The high prices of gas do suck but like another poster stated I dont drink, smoke or even gamble so my vice is fishing and part of fishing is gas.
Maybe we could set up a trip sharing pay for half of the gas kinda thing???
riverrat2 07-23-2005, 07:18 PM Speaking of my truck I just got half the way to the cape and my freakin truck crapped the bed. Me and my vehicle have a love/hate relationship :nailem: . I am f'n pissed especially since I bought 12 eels and filled my freaking tank for an all night trip.
Newboater 07-24-2005, 06:46 AM Yup - Gas is getting up there. Put in 25 gallons yesterday to go out towards Isles of Shoals off N.H. $70.00 please - Hello ????
Didn't get any strippers but 2KR was fun for kids with 20-25 Dog Fish taken and about 10 Skates.
The Dogfish I didn't mind tearing up getting them off the hook but are the Skates good eating ? I heard someplace you can bbq them for pretty good taste.

jfcortellini 07-24-2005, 03:23 PM Regarding trip sharing, check out www.carpoolworld.com. These folks offer a very slick product for trip sharing, with the capability of setting up separate, independent ride share groups. I think the usual application of this technology is for home-to-work commuting, but it seems like it would work great for anglers wanting to share expenses, minimize consumption of petroleum, and limit greenhouse and other bad emissions.
