View Full Version : Cuttyhunk sign up whos going??
GBOUTDOORS 01-17-2002, 01:55 PM This would not have to be just a one shot deal but lets start with the first weekend in June. We could go over on Fri or Sat. you do not need reservations for the ferry so if you had to cancel last min. it would not cost you anything. I will go over on Fri. for sure so anyone that came over would have a place to hang his hat and we could fish fri. sat. and sun. morn. the boat goes back at 3 and back at New Bedford for 4.
Tattoo 01-17-2002, 02:00 PM I'm in! Is tenting allowed out there?
JohnR 01-17-2002, 02:04 PM That weekend is my wedding anniversary so that might be tough. Last year, she let me go away for that weekend but I don't think I can push it two years in a row. But....
GBOUTDOORS 01-17-2002, 02:06 PM No only on your own land and I don't mind but we would have to do a little clearing.Or we can just put some tents up in the yard its good size. That would be easyer but wuold not get our lot cleared!:laughs: :laughs: :laughs:
GBOUTDOORS 01-17-2002, 02:09 PM John I would be glad to have you go over with me for just one night and I could run you back the next day. Would that work for you? If not will still do this weekend and you can pick the one you want to go.

Fish_Eye 01-17-2002, 06:03 PM Hey, What's the big deal about Cuttywhere?

Clammer 01-17-2002, 06:57 PM Yes,Yes< Please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just one question !!! 1St weekend in june isn;t too early for the island????
last year we went on the mystery trip at the Cape, we left fish here and except for a very short blitz at dawn, the rest of the day ZERO // We were aweek too early ////// later Mike:happy: :laughs:
GBOUTDOORS 01-17-2002, 07:13 PM What do say Fish Eye are we to early?? I used to do good on the south beach all the way to west end of island first of June infact I looked it up and my notes from back in the early 80s say June first to the 6th was when I would catch my first Big fish of the year.
GBOUTDOORS 01-17-2002, 07:32 PM yes this is me 21 years ago Clamdigger check the dates on the photos.
http://striped-bass.com/images/gb_126a.jpg
GBOUTDOORS 01-17-2002, 07:39 PM These were the last two years that I was on the island to fish. What a idiot so much lost time.
http://striped-bass.com/images/gb_128a.jpg
Got Stripers 01-17-2002, 08:36 PM Oh yeah, I'd be interested in a big way. Probably too early to try to get out with the boat too, the weather that time of year can be iffy sometimes. What about running a boat over that time of year? Is it too early ie; weatherwise too iffy for a small boat?
redcrbbr 01-17-2002, 09:14 PM oh please, please, please, can i huh??? sorry to sound like i'm begging, but i will if need to
it is truly a very kind and generous invitation and i would very much like to join this great event. thank you gb

Got Stripers I am taking my boat over for the weekend 1851 cc striper seaswirl. If you want to you could bring a boat I do have one morring pole in the harbor infront of the house but the water gets low with tide out no rocks just mud but only about 2' at low. Red Crbbr your from Westport? I am next door in Fairhaven. Clamdigger what kind of gps you looking at? I have a Magellan 315 hand held and a Garmin 128 fix mount on the boat. Of the two I like the hand held the best as it goes with me everywere. If you realy get into the gps look up Maptech searver on the internet it is a great chart site that is free and get this if you look at the bottom of the chart screen as you move your pointer over a rock or reef it will give you the long/lad of that spot to the foot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
redcrbbr 01-17-2002, 11:05 PM yes gb, live near horseneck beach, and look at cuttyhunk almost every single day. thank you again. hope to meet up with you at the msba show. already started checking out a few spots. you might like this one ;)
http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?S=13&T=1&X=212&Y=2867&Z=19&W=2
GBOUTDOORS 01-18-2002, 07:11 AM Good site I had not found this one yet you can zoom in better than most I have seen thanks.
Fish_Eye 01-18-2002, 08:15 AM Once Tattoo and others find out that Cutty is a "dry" island (no blueberries...at least no blueberry beer) you might have to start scratching names off the list
Seriously, the first week of June is great, BUT the last week is fantastic.
It sounds like we have all the makings for a pretty nice tournament...what do you think?
GBOUTDOORS 01-18-2002, 08:34 AM OK so no brew but lots of fish and fun and Fish Eye is right could this become the first annual Striped-Bass.Com tournament on the island It would be up to John if he wants his name on this thing or not? Maybe he should wait to see how this one turns out first. I know the CT. surfcasters have one out there every year. I e-mailed them to see if and when they would have theirs but have not got an answer since last week. The date can be changed to other weekends in June but I think we do want it in June. If every one on the list I posted will pick a weekend I will go with the most popular is that fare?
Tattoo 01-18-2002, 08:53 AM A DRY ISLAND????
Who the....What the....well, there cant be any place better to be in detox. :D Looks like Iron Mike is out huh???
Maybe Uncle Crafty can make an extra stong version of his chowda.....Now Crafty....you need to put more magic juice in the pot rather than in your glass this time....
JHABS 01-18-2002, 09:10 AM If IRON MIKE goes he will dry up like RAISIN:smash:
JohnR 01-18-2002, 09:13 AM WOOOHOOOOO!!! My anniversary is on a weeknight!!!! (sorry honey  ) :smash: so I'm pretty sure I'm in (I'll only need to do the normal amount of paperwork - no anniversary forms this year ;) )
I do want to add, that in mid June, we will have the first Rhody Leg of the Second Annual S-B 4 leg C&R derby ;) and early July will be the Cape/Mass leg
The First Annual S-B Cutty Tourney sounds pretty good too. C&R? but fish over 30#s still count :bl:
Dry Island? That's fine. I don't mix drinking with beach business anyway....
Tattoo 01-18-2002, 09:15 AM Too funny Hab, too funny!:D
GBOUTDOORS 01-18-2002, 09:21 AM Ok thats it the first weekend in June is it. And only C+R will count do we want one night or two I think one Sat. only would be fare to all as some may not be able to do Fri/Sat. All fish from Sat. at 2pm on will count and last fish would be Sun. at 2pm that would give anyone time to fish the barges on Sun. and still RUN!!!! to the boat dock in time. Now what about prizes I will give up one old plug for first prize winner can pick
JohnR 01-18-2002, 09:52 AM Sounds good and smallest fish has to put 50 smackers of gas in your boat ;)
Crafty Angler 01-18-2002, 10:51 AM I think the Iron One will probably do okay on Cuttyhunk - that's where he landed his 63# bass.
In fact, the Mystic One, myself and John were discussing that over a beverage just last nite...:D
Canalratt1 01-18-2002, 11:35 AM Hey don't forget me! I promise I'll leave the deer alone!
JohnR 01-18-2002, 11:50 AM Hey, uhh Canalratt, you - err - mean you won't SHOOT the deer, right ;) ?
Canalratt1 01-18-2002, 12:03 PM Soouie Yah thats what I mean!:D
Clammer 01-18-2002, 12:59 PM GB I;m looking at/most likely getting the Garman 180.
Kind of had my mind made up for me// last November we were coming in from a late season Striper trip at 11 ;45 pm, we caught fish ,but running to port , no moon ,dark night spray, came down a wave and there it was !!! a great big channel marker, hit it dead center in the bow, took some damage but that was minor to what could have been,, we were dressed for the weather, layers and all that bukly stuff and not another boat around, I.Ve relied on the compass and ranges since I sold my last boat w/loran ,but too many times you can.t use them, oh well its part of the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GBOUTDOORS 01-18-2002, 01:47 PM Good unit I fished with one of my customers out of padanaram last fall late night coming back from Cuttyhunk we followed it from can to can it was great, alarm would sound as we came up on the markers. Thats how I got the 128 it was his and he upgraded to 180.
TheSpecialist 01-18-2002, 02:29 PM I got the Garmin GPSMAP76 this year. It is WAAS ready and has navaids built in. It will also give you sun, moon , and tide data. It is a pretty smart little unit.
GBOUTDOORS 01-19-2002, 10:35 AM All who can make it will get a small cuttyhunk bag from the corner store on cuttyhunk and we will have some hats and mugs to give away for maybe most fish caught and smallest.
GBOUTDOORS 01-19-2002, 04:43 PM OOOOOOH AAAAAAAH
GBOUTDOORS 01-19-2002, 04:50 PM GREAT HATS

JohnR 01-19-2002, 05:16 PM Sweet Hats! :btu:
GB - We should talk in the near future (within the next month) and hammer out some of the details. You are doing an incredibly nice thing for everyone here and I want to make sure you don't unnecessarily overextend yourself. Because you are doing so much already to make this happen, I propose that everyone kicks in a small amount so we can bring some food over, have a fish pool which will pay for biggest & smallest ;) , as well as the other things we come up with along the way....
I'm also wondering if it might be adviseable to push back a week or two for everyone to hit the Island at the BEST possible time :btu:
And again, I think I can speak for everyone when I say how thankful we are that your putting us up like that - Big Thumbs Up!!
chris L 01-19-2002, 05:24 PM ;) dont forget me ! As long as I am not on call that weekend !
GBOUTDOORS 01-19-2002, 05:34 PM John if it will not get in the way of the RI leg of the S-B C+R derby we can have it any weekend in June. That will give me more time to go out and find all the big ones before the derby.;) ;) ;)
Slipknot 01-19-2002, 05:37 PM You won't have far to go to find them GB. :)
The hunk,the hunk,the,hunk
There's nothing like the hunk
Ra ra ra......
ya, what John said:D:happy:
Crafty Angler 01-20-2002, 09:59 AM GB -
On top of an already kind and very generous offer, the hats take the cake.
I've been looking for a new lucky hat - my standby is now 6 or 7 years old - I could see myself wearin' a Cuttyhunk hat til it turns into dust...
John and GB - If you guys need a hand in any way to help things along or organize, let me know, I'd be happy to help. We've got a good crew here and it would be the kind of trip that would be a lot of fun and generate more than a few good stories - no doubt! :laughs:
I'll DEFINITELY pack a camera for this one...
Just one request...puhleeeease don't make it the weekend of June 29th....
Crafty Angler 01-20-2002, 10:01 AM Heh heh heh - the Alliance goes amphibious...
chris L 01-20-2002, 11:48 AM I dont mix alchol with fishing !
Im with John If we all kick in a few dollars each we can off set costs and help pay for the gas .
Im game .
And John have you figured out around when the S-B 4 legs will run . Try for new moon weekends !
Crafty Angler 01-20-2002, 01:06 PM I'm with you, Chris -
A good nite of fishing for me is as likely to be followed by a cold Pepsi as a cold beer - AFTER I've returned home to put away my gear.
As for drinking and fishing... never. It doesn't mix well with navigating rocks and swells in the dark. A friend of mine was formerly an accident investigator for the RI DEM - none of the stories are pretty and most of them involved alcohol.
Not that I've turned into a teetotaler in my old age - but there's a time and a place as far as I'm concerned.
I think everyone here will be focused on the fishing aspect. And everyone I would think expects to help offset expenses and give a hand where needed.
Besides, we've still got some winter to go and the planning will help pass a few more of the snowy nights we have left.
GBOUTDOORS 01-20-2002, 04:37 PM Ok Chris L your name is added to the list. John I will pm you my cell number and we can talk next week some time. Crafty I will pm it to you also call me any time if I do not answer try again as this is my work cell and is busy but you will get threw. This is shaping up to be a great time can't wait.
Great looking Hunk bag!!!!

GBOUTDOORS 01-21-2002, 03:57 PM Ok I thought the 15th looked the best also. John what do you think? Maybe the S-B Cuttyhunk derby should be on the 15th to the 16th. Canalratt I will bring the deer burgers and steaks and the grill if you will leave the deer alone. Also some wild boar chops. If anyone wants anything other than deer or boar just bring it or we can set it up to have some regular burgers and hot dogs to do on the grill. John I am making up some maps of the south shore and will have them laminated so every one will know where they are and some good spots to fish.
TheSpecialist 01-21-2002, 05:29 PM AH JOhn I vote GB to be logostics Man on all tournies. Laminated maps :) You are too good to us. Make sure your mark all lunker spots, and in return I will keep Canalratt away from the deer. I may even bring some venison out if I have any left.:D

So please count me in too!!!!!!
I thought i would never get a chance to fish there time won't pass soon enough!   :D
GBOUTDOORS 01-22-2002, 07:20 AM Alright AnthonyN your on the list. My wife said the same thing but after meeting John R and Tattoo,Crafty,Milo,Bloocrab,Fish Eye at the East Bay show I knew this gang was harmless. And we will be going to Cuttyhunk to FISH, its a dry island so you can not buy any alcohol on the island. I'm not sure but they look to be harmless to the fish too:jester:
Got Stripers 01-22-2002, 09:46 AM Anthony it's not the majority you have to be careful about, it's that BM guy, because he wants to make lovers out of the key people he meets and GB might now be on the top of his hit list :).
GBOUTDOORS 01-22-2002, 12:07 PM Hey Bloo it would be great to have some chourico. I am making a list of what everyone wants to bring and will be sure that we don,t starve. Specialist the maps are done and I did mark all the spots I did best at 20 or so years ago.

I ain't necessarily lookin' for grandma spots, just wondering.
GBOUTDOORS 01-23-2002, 04:14 PM Crafty I can put you on fish just off the road and on the beach. But don't worry I will work on something for us with my old friend Donna Veeder. I have a bad back and can't do the cliff thing like I use to and Donna has a nice Johndeer rig on the island and we go wayyyyyyy back as friends and family. I can also talk to Asa the harbor master about getting a lift around he is the caretaker for the house.

Crafty Angler 01-23-2002, 04:42 PM Thanks, GB -
I'm definitely not the lazy type, most of my favorite spots require a walk and a good bit of scrambling - I'll wear out the boots on a pair of waders long before the seat of the pants and usually live in my korkers and fish rocks 98% of the time anyway.
Just haven't been there and was curious about the layout - I did read Charlie Soares article about it though.
But I know what you mean about the back - I have to be careful myself - if it goes, it's nobody's idea of fun, I can tell ya.
GBOUTDOORS 01-23-2002, 07:18 PM CRAFTY THE SHORE IS GREAT FOR FISHING AROUND MOST OF THE ISLAND BUT NOT TO GOOD FOR WALKING AND THE FEW ROADS THERE ARE WELL THEY GO UP HILL BOTH WAYS IF YOU KNOW WHAT I AM SAYING. BUT WE WILL HAVE 24 HOURS TO GET ALL THE WAY AROUND IT. THE ROAD GOING TO THE WEST END IS OK TO WALK ON BUT ONCE YOU GO DOWN TO THE SHORE ITS TOUGH TO GET BACK UP THE CLIFFS. BUT THAT WHOLE SHORE IS GREAT SO YOU SHOULD FISH IT ALL THE WAY TO THE WEST END AND THEN GO BACK ON TO THE ROAD AS IT COMES DOWN TO THE WATER THERE.

Marking my calendar. Is there an anchporage or moorings available? Would love to bring down the 1957 Beals Island my brother and I spent 3 years refurbishing
SeaWolf 01-24-2002, 12:03 PM this sounds very interesting. how's beach access? got truck? i loved to give this island a try. isn't this place off the coast of kentucky? i've heard of it before.
hey, tat - dry island, no problem. i'll introduce you to a friend of mine while we're on the mainland. maybe you've heard of him. his name is something like sam. ring a bell? then, i might introduce you to my friend cap't. i think he knows your friend coke. hmmm???
Tattoo 01-24-2002, 12:32 PM
You mean Mr. Morgan??? Oh we had some good times.......but alot of bad times too. Why does someone always want to fight?
Fish-Eye, that case of Maggie show up from across the ocean yet????
Now that I think of it, anyone know where there is some Sam "Cranberry Lambec". I had it twice, but have been unable to locate any since. I think it's a seasonal thing.
SeaWolf 01-24-2002, 12:52 PM yeah, i've taken a few swings with mr. morgan. he hits ya pretty hard sometimes. and he's still kicking you the next day!
ahh, cranberry lambec. i've been looking too. i had one this winter, but it was bad - wasn't cared for properly. i think they are only available in the seasonal sample packs. you get like 2 of each flavor. i haven't seen it sold separately. maybe we need a "3-hour tour" of "sam's house"...i'm game!
Tattoo 01-24-2002, 01:33 PM Nope, mine didn't come in a sample pack. It was more like a quart size bottle.
Maybe we need to put up some missing persons posters?
A three hour tour???? They give a tour??? I will have to gather the troops for this one! Oh honey we are just going to a fishing show to give Eye-Ball some moral support, yeah that'll work.
Crafty Angler 01-24-2002, 01:56 PM Whaddya mean, do you think Fish_Eye's morals need supporting?
GBOUTDOORS 01-24-2002, 02:16 PM Nightfighter there are moorings in the harbor for 25.00 per night from the town. Call Asa Lumbard at 508-990-7578 he is the harbormaster and will save one for you. But you can not call till sometime in May as the town has the phone shut off for the winter.I think they also take all the water out of the harbor in the winter to clean it :laughs: There are also some private moorings out side the harbor from Frog Pond Marine vhf ch 9.
redcrbbr 01-24-2002, 07:37 PM I was just curious, was it decided the weekend of june 15 was a go??? still can't believe it. Cuttyhunk and the Patriots in the playoffs all in the same year!!!!!
GBOUTDOORS 01-24-2002, 10:46 PM Not sure yet I need to see when John is doing the RI leg of the S-B derby. But it looks good right now. Red CRBBR a few of my customers have summer places on the river and one told me he caught a few schoolies out of a deep hole out of the river the other day. I know New Bedford harbor has winter over fish but I had never heard of the Westport haveing any? What do you think? Not to much deep water!
JohnR 01-25-2002, 10:35 AM 15th of June sounds great to me, I already have blessings from TheBetterHalf (you guys are lucky yer wife isn't always checking you up online :smash: ) - just kidding honey :smash: :smash: :smash: . Seriously, the 15th works great if that's OK with everyone. I was thinking the weekend before might be bigger as it's the backside of the moon with evening high tides but I don't know that Island... So maybe do Cutty one weekend and the S-B Rhody leg the next? Or is tha too tight for people?
I think we'll schedule the S-B Rhody leg in around June 9th or 15th (depending on Cutty) with the Mass leg in early July.

Ummm, I don't know about that statement John. If you see BM online during the day, it may not be BM. if you know what I mean.
That reminds me, I should be working right now.
