What should I do to cast out far with lures and bait without useing a weight... I cant use eels because they are onily good at night

put a Kastmaster on... cast a country mile..

Bombers can be whipped out there. Jigs...

Chunk bait with a weight 4oz+

I use Youzzourie or how ever you spell it

Go at slack tide with the wind at your back

Striperboy, If you go fishing at low tide, whether or not it's day or night, I would suggest you do alot of scouting first. Not only as to where the fish may be, but for a nice, flat, dry rock that you can cast from, and a relatively easy path down to the water to land your fish. Get Korkers, or go down the slippery rocks below the high tide line on your butt. The canal ain't the safest place, and even I get a little nervous when I go alone. I'd suggest you take a buddy, or at the very least, a life jacket. Have fun! :wavey:

Striperboy, go to the canal and watch others fish a while, you'll see many different styles, get an idea about what methods are successful and find one that matches you. I like to jig, to do it right it takes the right tackle and a lot of lost jigs to get the feel.

Lots of people successfully chunk fish. I work with a guy who does quite well fishing chunk mackerel with nothing more than a hook a 3' leader a swivel and a rubber core sinker. Try to find a back eddy that will kind of hold the bait in one place when the current is running. Keep the rod in your hand so you can feel the pickup. Many a fish is missed whne the rod is wedged in the rocks, they don't all catch themselves.

Im breaking rule one BIGTIME when it comes to the canal
I need to spend some quality time there this weekend at some point. Unless I am dragged out in the boat again

The canal is a tough place to fish but if you can figure it out you can get large from there! I wish I lived closer so I could spend more time there mastering it.

Jigs - Jigs -Jigs When you loose them ( 1st hour) go get more -Night time - Eels -Sluggos - Storms -After the Blues rip them apart go get more.
When you go to purchase more STUFF - SHHHHH - Listen to what people are talking about and look for what is being sold. Then when you spend a few dollars ask a few questions...and LISTEN...The shops all along the canal hear and know what is good and what is not..THEY FISH TOO..

Remember this : Fishing the canal comes with a price....You gotta pay in time and lost tackle...Watch your footing and always greet others with a smile and a good day or morning...even those that are just walking for exercise...they see more than those that stand still....After a few years you will learn....I know I am still learning.....

ONE MORE THING - Bring a few small plastic bags with you....This is to get your trash out and be good and pick up from the other slobs...If we all do this then the place will be alot cleaner and safer.... :hihi:
