View Full Version : Dunkin Donuts
This morning I make my stop for coffee before work. I order a medium iced coffee and a plain donut. The girl says $3.05. I am looking at the register and it says $3.29. I hand her a twenty and watch how she hands me back the change. Bills in one hand and change in the other hand. She hands me the bills and apparently expects me to just give her the rest of the change. I take the bills and the change and she gives me this annoyed look and turns right around to help the next customer. I look at the bills and she gave me a 1 and a 5 and 95 cents in coins. I tell her that I gave her a 20. She then looks at the other woman working with her and adamantly states he gave me a 10. I then told her I gave her a 20 because all I had was 20s. Well she wouldn't hear it so I get pissed. Of course there were no managers as this dunks is in a mobil station. I leave fuming heading for work. The thing that really bothers me is that it is the principal of the whole thing. I told her I would be back tomorrow to get my 10 bux after she counts her drawer and finds out she is over. ( I will probably be told that she counted out correctly and it was my error) So instead of going back to that store I am going to the other store where the manager works during the early morning hours and tell her what transpired. The 10 bux isn't going to break me but that little snotty nosed chit really got me pissed. And while I am ranting why is it that they expect a tip? It isn't like I was sitting down and was served. They chose the job as coffee pourer it wasn't forced on them.
Mac, they don't deserve a tip. It's not like they're getting below minimum wage like a waitress or something. But everybody feels like they should be tipped these days. Every sub shop in my area has a tip jar on the counter.
Redsoxticket 07-28-2005, 07:56 PM Mac, I had a friend that has been thru this before and he asked the manager to view the tape of the camera of the day and time. I would suggest doing this ASAP.

I thought about that too. I really don't give a rats patootie about the 10 bux. It is just that girl was so self righteous, she needs to be brought back to reality. If she wants to make tips go down the street and get a job at the restaurant or across the street from it at Alex's.
Squid kids Dad 07-28-2005, 08:06 PM Mac I agree...One DD I go to always expects a tip and their attitude sucks...I now go to a different one in the same town, owned by the same guy and they are completely different... Sometimes I tip sometimes I dont...So dont &&%$^ expect it... :splat:
thefishingfreak 07-28-2005, 08:11 PM i'll tip 'em when i walk thru the door and they just gimmie "the look" and poor my coffee without asking how i want it. usually a shiney nickle or a dime.

Backbeach Jake 07-28-2005, 09:48 PM She deliberately short-changed you. I could tell by the part where she looked to her co-worker. Ask for the instant replay, she'll get hers. I loathe people who expect tips for 3rd rate service. Next time when you pay, state loudly" HERE'S A TWENTY" :laughs:

Probably did. Wonder how many times she has done that to other people to supplement her income.
Fishpart 07-29-2005, 06:34 AM Happens all the time. I got whacked like that in Olneyville. Most of the time they are smart enough to just give you the money so you dont call their manager and ge tthem fired. There is some serious bux in that gig if you thinks about it. You could make a weeks pay extra every day cash money :nailem: :nailem: :nailem: :behead: :behead:

RIROCKHOUND 07-29-2005, 07:35 AM When I tend bar I make it a point to always repeat the bill back to the person; I.e. I'll say 9.00 and then when they hand a 20 over say 'out of 20' that way there is no confusion;
I try and stay out of DD as a rule once my medium ice coffee jumped to 2.11; now I only go when noone else is open

I agree rockhound, repeat what is given to you. You really need to blame the managers for ill-training their workers. When I first started out in retail as a youngster, my manager taught me how to take money, lay the bills across the drawer before giving back the change and how to actually count back the change without having to look at what the register says the change is. Dumb kids some of them are, but dumber managers.

UserRemoved1 07-29-2005, 11:37 AM Mac if you write that up on a piece of paper and send it to the main headquarters they WILL send you lots of free coupons...and you might even see a check for $10 too but that might be pushing it.
Saltheart 07-29-2005, 02:20 PM I once went through the Dunkin donuts drive through and bought about $5.50 in stuff. I hand her the $10 and she hands me back about $6.50 in change. I immediately know its wrong so without even bringing my hand back into the car i just show her the change and say that's not right. She looks at the six something change 9which is already $2 too much) and she then reaches into the register and starts giving me MORE money. I now know she can't count or make change si i say , no , you gave me too much. She says , oh that's OK , just keep it. I drive away!!?? I don't think kids all have to be rocket scientists but if you can't even make change correctly , you're in for a long difficult life!! :)
outfished 07-29-2005, 04:00 PM Exactly my point! How are these kids ever going to manage their finance's if they don't even know basic addition and subtraction? And some people are against mcas testing. I guess some parents don't really want to know how dumb their kids are.
Goose 07-29-2005, 07:47 PM Yo Mac, next time buy 5 bucks in stuff and pay her in pennies...ooops all the pennies slipped out of my hand and over the counter.
Raven 07-30-2005, 07:03 AM they are on every 20 dollar bill.....you can write them down on coffee money
just so you have proof that bill (note) was just recently in your posession. after depositing 60 bucks in a bank of America in cash in a deposit envelope @ in their ATM i learned that trick............
because they ripped me off for the money and i'll never use them again.
TheSpecialist 07-30-2005, 07:36 AM 10 bucks says that 10 bucks was gone from the till before she cashed out.....
Well I talked to her manager yesterday and told her of what transpired. She (the manager) was very apologetic. I mentioned that she could watch the video tape and see that I gave the girl a 20. She wrote down the time and took my # and promised to look into it. If I don't hear anything from it I will go Saltys' route with a letter to corporate headquarters.
Like I said before I don't care about the 10 bux it is the principal of the whole thing. The girl is stealing and it isn't right.
UserRemoved1 07-30-2005, 08:44 AM Mac send the letter too...
My dad does the taxes for someone there....high up. They look at this stuff. They WANT to hear about these kind of things so they know if the franchisee is properly representing them etc.
fishaholic18 07-30-2005, 09:02 AM Yo Mac, next time buy 5 bucks in stuff and pay her in pennies...ooops all the pennies slipped out of my hand and over the counter.
Tony, tell the DD story you told me and Clammer..I'm still laughing. :jump1:
Diamond Tackle 07-30-2005, 12:59 PM I hear ha mac. A gas station tried that chit with me once back in like 85 when gas was a lot cheaper. I fill $10, hand him a $20,and he walks away.I say, Hey chief, wheres my change?. "you only gave me $10".I completely flew off the handle, the cops came & I got my $10 change. the cop took my plate and name and home# etc,he believed me not the idiot pumping the gas. Its considered theft, esp if u got proof. I would also never back down from that same scenario. Definitely send a letter if the manger if she doesnt resolve it,(but Im sure she will).
a little off topic, u know when u go to the drive thru and you get cheated out of something u paid for, call the manager immed when u get home, give him the exact time on the receipt etc, 99 out of 100 he will offer u a free meal next time u are there. I did this like 5 times already at wendys. They know when you are serious.
Backbeach Jake 07-30-2005, 07:07 PM For everybody here: If you work as hard as I do for buck, you can't just some self entitled punk take it away from you. Make a stink, a huge, just ran over a skunk stink. They're not running an errand for Mummie here, they're doing business. The numbers have to be right.
fishaholic18 08-01-2005, 03:00 PM MAC, just hand them a pile of change next time at the drive thru, less the amount you owe and drive away...They'll never figure it out.. :poke:
Jimbo 08-01-2005, 04:33 PM This is why I hate going into stores period. Outfished is right, it's partly training. Think about the last time you bought something and your change was counted back to you properly and not dropped haphazardly in your hand, and on top of that YOU get attitude from the person on the other side of the counter. It is beyond me why a manager would let a kid or anyone get away with talking down to a customer. In most cases, the customer IS right. I don't even want to get started on the abuse of my food in supermarkets. "Look dude, I'm sorry yoiu ain't making enough to cover the cost of another dozen earrings and a new paintjob on the hair, but don't take it out on my food. I plan to eat it when I get home. You wanna slam dunk something go find a basketball court."
Even where tipping is appropriate, I have no problem rating the service I got and tipping accordingly. It's not rocket science. Deliver the product with a pleasant demeanor, on time, as requested, and stop back once in a while, smile, and see how I'm doing. If you expect 20% from me because you think just wearing an apron makes you a waitress, you're probably already down to 10%.
Raven 08-01-2005, 04:43 PM to quote JIMBO:
"Look dude, I'm sorry you ain't making enough to cover the cost of another dozen earrings and a new paintjob on the hair, but don't take it out on my food. I plan to eat it when I get home. You wanna slam dunk something go find a basketball court."
too funny!! thanks brother, for the belly laugh.... hahahahahahaha
nofences 08-01-2005, 07:19 PM I deal with this every damn morning!!!! First of all it's sad to even think that these Dunkin workers are the future of America. They always screw up my large regular ice and a donut, how hard is that?!!! It used to cost $2.98 and they would hand me the 2 cents expecting a larger tip!!! Needless to say I wouldn't even give the 2 cents. Then one day they raised the damn price to $ 3.25, now I know this was just to to help induce larger tips right. Well not here buddy, I purposely take my change because they expect it!!! I shouldn't get too upset though because I need someone to get my coffee!!!!!:)
Raider Ronnie 08-01-2005, 07:39 PM Are most of the complaints about american DD workers or the NON english speaking (Brazilian) ones, like we have out my way?
Motor Fish 08-01-2005, 09:02 PM They have another trick up there sleeves too. I called them on it twice. I order two number 2's and know how much it will cost, let's say $7.25. She looks at me and asks for $8.75. I hand her a 10 and step aside and double check my math. After I'm sure I got ripped off, I tell her that she charged me too much. She opens the drawer and hands me $2, no questions asked, almost like she wanted me to go away ASAP. She knew exactly what she was doing. I wonder how many people she does that to everyday.
Goose 08-01-2005, 09:29 PM This one's fa Dave & Mike
I few years back I was in a rush to go fishin. It happen to be a full moon I just wanted to grab my coffee and go ASAP. I get to where you order, it takes her a while and she says "I'll be right with you". I'm waiting and waiting and waiting, man it seemed like forever, mean while this freakin B*&^%tch is yappin away with her freind who's in the car a head of me at the pick up window. Finally I just couldn't take it any longer. It had to have been at least 10-15 mintues.. seemed like forever. At this point my blood pressure is rising and I get a bit nervouse too, so I drove up real close to the car in front of me while shes still yappin away. Now I very F*&^in pissed. I started counting all the pennies, nickles, dimes and a couple qaurters if I remember correctly. I had as much change as possible. Finally after about 15 or 20 minutes the car drove off and I pulled up to the window. I swear to you.. I don't even know how I got the words out of my mouth but I did..... cause my head felt like it was gonna blow. I tell her "med regular"! when she put the coffee down, I wipped as hard as I could a handfull of change at the stainless steel counter and that chit flew every where I grabed the coffee and yelled as loud as I could....."YOU F@%&in B*&^tch, who the F do you think you are?" I'm pretty sure those where my exact words. I was so pissed I remember was gonna go inside a reem her a new a$$ because I worked for the owner at the time(after all that I problably would have lost my job for being a nutt case). I chilled out alot since then and avoid those kinda situations and I use a little more tack.
fishaholic18 08-02-2005, 03:38 AM Thanks Tony!! :thanks:

Thanks Goose. I may use the penny one :)

This is the only one I have seen like that. Too bad more places don't adopt this policy.

Well I went to see the manager again since she never called back. Guess what; she said the girls draw was short 41 cents  So apparently the manager never intended to call me back either. I informed her that I was going to write a letter to her corporate headquarters which didn't seem to faze her either. I asked her what ever happened to " The customer is always right" ? To which I got no response.
Of course her drawer was only off by that much, cuz she pocketed your $10.
Supplementing her income.
Hooper 08-03-2005, 06:22 AM I Hate Dunkin' Donuts so much I get angry just thinking about that place! On Cape Cod, as with most places I am sure, they become so F'ing crowded in the mornings that the traffic on the road in front becomes impassible. Then it's 20 minutes of waiting to get a cup of lousy coffee with a side of attitude.
Screw that place, I gave up coffee completely. You'd be amazed how much stress that relieves.
Newboater 08-03-2005, 07:09 AM I work PT at a DD for money to support my boat. The girls up front in this area of New Hampshire are forbidden to even take tips. I know down in Mass they put cups out on the counter marked tips. Maybe they get paid less. I think the folks that run the 7 DD's in this area start off the help at 6.50 an hour with raises at 6 months. Since I drive a little truck a couple hours I started at $7.50. Keeps Social Security from jumping on my arse about making too much money since I'm early SS.
Speaking of Social Security - they are going to be out of money quickly. I'm 63 but have 2 kids under 18. When I put in for SS, the kids automatically got $571.00 apiece each month until 18 or 24 if still going to school. I get $1161.00 a month so I guess they split about that amount. I never expected that but it's the rules of Sociald Security. Go Figure.

Saltheart 08-03-2005, 08:13 AM Yep , that ten was in her pocket before your car cleared the drive through!.
Answere is simple , they don't care about an individual customer anymore. They figure there's another one right behind you.
Doesn't get your ten back but know that someday that attitude will catch up to her on some deal she really cares about. It will cost her big and make up for the ten she took many times over.

Well there's the problem right there. The management. I go to a Wendy's in Acton. Workers are polite.. hell.. friendly even. 9 times out of 10 the order is ready as I drive up to the window and I've never had a problem with a screwed up order or change. I'd write dd corp headquarters and tell them about the treatment you got from the manager.

Bingo. I don't know how they ever got the rep for good coffee in the first place. It might be "good" as compared to a Greek diner (even tho most diners still charge less than a buck for a 12 oz to go), but it's no better than a lot of mini-mart coffee.
You can get a 24 oz at 7-11 for less than a buck and a half. Plus, it's self serve and you can smell the pot before you pour to make sure it's fresh and hasn't been sitting for hours. And the guy at the counter doesn't expect a tip ;)
HighTide 08-04-2005, 01:42 PM I pass a DD with a drivethru every morning and the line is all the way out into the street. I'm thinking "suckers".
Years ago , DD was pretty decent. the coffe was good , so they changed it. The muffins were good, so they changed them. I think they suck. I'll never go there again.

Actually no. What you sound like to me is a 28 or 29 year old who had everything given to him by his parents. You seem to be the type who looks down on most with disdain and thinks the majority are inferior. You need to look at the whole picture. Sure what happened could have been an honest mistake on her part but I do doubt it. And the comment about tipping... Dunkin Donuts used to have a sign up on the menu NO TIPPING ALLOWED. And back then you could sit down and the girl would serve you coffee and a donut or whatever you liked. They key word here is (served) for this they were justified a TIP. But DD wouldn't allow it. You tell me why she is justified in getting a tip for pouring a cup of coffee that she is getting paid for pouring.

Thats very intersting , cause MANY people I know who go to DD's refer to it as their "liquid Crack" fix, jokingly of course, but i wonder if they are adding something to the coffee. Its pretty much common knowledge that Mc Donalds for example intentionally adds Sugar to EVERYTHING even their salads, which you would not suspect, but its true. And dont even try to figure out whats in chicken nuggets. IMO,these big corporations are slowly but deliberately poisoning us. Watch the documentary Supersize Me, you may NEVER go to a fast food restaurant again in your life.
If you travel anywhere else in the world even third world countries, the food tastes so completely different(better),it makes you wonder what is really going on here.
sorry to go slightly off topic

down here we got 7-11's open 24 hrs.like mike said i know what i'm gettin before its poured....An I know excactly what it costs.plus i would rather make my own coffe anyways.u ever see how they shovel the sugar in the cups foof fooof fooof three large scoops.who can drink that.an i don't know if its the creamer or the donuts but one of em gives me heartburn.Plus over 2 bucks for a large coffe is ridiculous..Starbucks = Puke I don't know who or how anyone drinks that crap.tried it twice an had to throw it away.both times.I think its the sheeple thing.Followin the hurd.

Just for fun, try screwing around with them when they start asking your name so they can "personalize" your cup :D
They're shocked that anyone wouldn't want their name on a "Lottabucks".
They won't do it for just a plain old overpriced cuppa joe, tho. You have to order the double grande latte or whatever the hell they call the $4 thingamajig :hihi:

but seriously twice now...both my wife and i have gotten ill from their

as for coffee: i make taster's choice gourmet coffee in less than three minutes for about 25 cents per cup. the only time i buy DD's coffee is when i'm on the road and have no choice and would rather get their high test coffee than crash.
they offer my dog donut holes too, when I go through the drive through. WTF is with that??? Pisses me off. I tell them no and they look at me like I am abusing the dog. I do like the coffee, but I don't drink a ton of it because we just brew a big pot in the moring to save $$..

Bass Babe 08-30-2005, 07:30 AM I gotta give the Seabrook DD employees some props. One morning, their electricity went out and they were running on a generator -- no cash register with the easy buttons. There was only a slight backup at the drive thru, and one smart girl was actually tallying the orders with paper and a calculator! And they still had smiles on their faces and apologies on their lips for the "wait". Generally it's hit or miss, though, on accuracy and politeness with these places.

Morons to the nth degree.
Mike P 08-30-2005, 09:18 PM I had the same thing happen to me..he says "we're all out of coffee" WTF I thought "get the @#^ outa here!"
Couple of years ago I was taking my son to his football game, early on a Sunday, and I get, "We're out of donuts"
Apparently, the delivery was really late.
And no, they're not baked on-site any more, at least in these parts. " Baked Fresh every 4 hours, 24 hours a day" has gone the way of the do-do, it seems :rollem:
Simple fix. Go to Starbucks. Aside from all the pricey Lattes and Cappacino drinks you can still get a good regular cup of coffee at a reasonable price. They take the time to make sure you get exactly what you want and in my experience are always courteous.

Raven 09-06-2005, 05:53 PM all coffee is going up as a result of hurricane katrina because thats where it
arrives from south America...down south and the docks are destroyed.
the price of coffee is going to go... up UP UP ^
on a side note- went to DND's the other night and watched a girl behind the counter ring up 3 customers.. each tiem she hit the no-sale button on the register and took their $$ and gave them back the right change- of course at the end of the night, you know that drawr is going to be a few hunded bucks over if she was doing that off and on all day :(
i hate thieves
Swimmer 09-11-2005, 10:55 AM Nebe,
I have and old buddy who bought two DD's and then went bigtime for three more in Bristol county. First thing he did is put very high tech cameras over and around the register. Needless to say he turns over employees all the time. He never pays unemployment though because of the film he has availale to take to the hearings. Cameras keep his losses to a minimum. Their are many funny stories around about order snafus especially at the drive ups.
Pete_G 09-11-2005, 02:31 PM Getting back to the addictive qualities...
I've been drinking coffee since I was 14 (I'm 27 now) and if you were to give me decaf in the morning and I somehow didn't notice, I'd be nauseus and have a headache by noon.
There's no question caffiene is physically additive. It's probably psychologically addictive as well. The way we buy it and especially when you make your own it has the same ritual style use like most drugs.
RIROCKHOUND 09-12-2005, 07:28 AM They say (an article in Nat'l Geo) that caffine is a 2-4 day residence time in your system... so if you stop drinking it you feel like ass for a few days then get better.. I stopped 2 winters ago; I got the flu (and didnt drink any coffee for 2 days) then got on a plane and went to Key West; had 1 cup thw whole time I was there, came back and didnt drink any for months; till the season started again.....
Raven 09-12-2005, 07:59 AM here's a link to a site about coffee addiction and the negative

snake slinger 09-13-2005, 04:03 PM the werst thing about double d is when you order a iced coffee.they fill the cup to the top with ice and you end up with about a shot glass of coffee.
kevin d 09-14-2005, 09:11 PM I do miss DD iced coffee. The first time I was down here in SC in the early 90s nobody down south had even heard of iced coffee. Plenty of sweet tea but clueless on iced coffee. On a trip from Camp Lejeune to Parris Island we stopped in Myrtle Beach to eat and I saw a DD with a poster of an iced coffee in the window. I poked my head in and asked them how they made their iced coffee (people down here would try to sell me hot coffee poured over ice.) In the thickest RI accent the lady asked where I was from. I just smiled, ordered an iced coffee and found out she was from Bristol, RI.
Raven 10-22-2005, 05:55 AM would you like some doughnuts with that?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Employers in Massacusetts pay the same amount of unemployment tax whether an employee collects or not. The tax is based on the number of employees hired, not whether any given employee collects.

Thanks Pete. I was reading the posts about some shops adding some mysterious drug to thier coffee, and I'm sittin' here thinkin', "...but coffee already HAS a powerfull drug in it. That's why we drink it!"
If anyone doubts that caffein is a powerfull drug, try going without it. The symptoms that yopu describe Pete are full blown withdrawal symptoms.
Raven 10-22-2005, 08:22 AM several times and it ain't happening...
.its worse than nicotine by ten....
imo....
of course everyones personal chemistry varies...
but when you look at the amount of coffee
sold, advertised, promoted within the good ole USA
its a panademic of society... with dependance...
thats off the scale...
kevin d 10-23-2005, 09:33 PM Raven,
that thwarted jacking was about 15 minutes from here. Wish the dude had broken his legs. I hate thieves.
Raven 10-24-2005, 05:45 AM no kidden Kev....wow.... hey, all it takes is a sign saying where ya wanna go, a clean shirt and a smile and you can hitch a ride anywhere...

Raven 12-01-2005, 06:52 PM now they are saying that coffee improoves short term memory...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
CHICAGO, Nov. 30 - A cup of coffee is good for the memory, at least the short term memory, according to research reported today. In a study of 15 healthy men ages 26 to 47, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) detected significant activity in the brain's memory centers 20 minutes after the men consumed 100 mg of caffeine, according an Austrian study reported at the Radiological Society of North America meeting here.
The activity was significantly greater than men who were imaged after consuming a matched placebo (P<0.05), said Florian Koppelstatter, M.D., of the University Hospital Innsbruck.
He said the fMRI scan detected activity in the anterior cingulate cortex of the brain, which is responsible for some short-term memory functions.
The men, all right-handed, underwent fMRI scans on two days. Half of the men were initially given water that contained a tasteless concentration of 100 mg of caffeine -- about the equivalent of two cups of coffee -- and half were given ordinary water. The groups were crossed over for the second scans.
Dr. Koppelstatter said that fMRI routinely detected activity as participants completed memory tasks during the scan, but caffeine significantly boosted brain function beyond that expected level. In addition to greater activity in the anterior cingulate cortex, men taking caffeine had increased activity in frontal cortex, and the inferior parital cortex. Moreover, since the men were all right handed, the increased activity was greater in the left hemisphere.
Twenty-minutes after consuming the drinks -- a time that Dr.Koppelstatter said was calculated as the caffeine's peak potency time in the brain -- the men underwent fMRI scans. He noted that caffeine's effect diminishes after 45 minutes.
Dr.Koppelstatter said the scans clearly demonstrated that caffeine has a definite impact on short-term memory processes. "This effect takes part in the distinct part of the working memory network that controls attention and concentration."
Michael Brant-Zawadzki, M.D., chairman of the RSNA communications committee and moderator at press conference where Dr. Koppelstatter discussed his research, said the findings will probably not surprise anyone because "we all know that coffee makes us more alert, but now we know how that works."
He said that finding also suggests a possible research target for the development of drugs to improve memory function. "It may be possible to develop drugs like caffeine that can stimulate these same brain regions," he said.
 oooo kay
