View Full Version : Got Rid Of The Funk At Cuttyhunk!
BigFish 07-29-2005, 09:15 PM Back from Cutty with Afterhours and may I say........"My Gawd"! What a beautiful and fishy looking place.....we had a blast! The trip started out with us arriving at the ferry pier to depart on Wednesday morning with plans to return on Thursday afternoon........ :hihi: ......well......it was only then that we were informed that the ferry would not be returning to Cuttyhunk to pick up passengers until Friday afternoon! Oh....what to do....what to do! So Don and I cast caution to the wind with only one nights reservation and no answer at the Fishing Club to see if we could extend our stay one night and decided to chance it and head over anyway! We would sleep on the beach if we had to! What would you all do? We walked no less than 10 miles in 2 days, covering most of the island and seeing all there was to see including 2 deer mid-day on Thursday...one of which went well over 200 pounds......what a beautiful sight! We fished many spots and found little action....at first......and then Thursday morning we found a spot that was consistent on topwater and proceeded to have our lures viciously attacked by hungry and aggressive schoolies for the most part.....Don worked the fish over good with his junior spook and me with my pencil poppers....we would catch all fish with these 2 plugs! We both had lots of swirls and tail slaps but I mustered 7 fish all schoolies but great fun and Don landed 9....2 keepers and the largest of which you will see in the photos to come. We just enjoyed Cuttyhunk for all it was worth, scouted quite a bit and were happy to catch fish!
Pic 1 is a view from the high point of the south west end of the island overlooking Grosnold Tower.....what a view!
BigFish 07-29-2005, 09:17 PM Pic 2 is of Afterhours at that same spot and pic 3 is of me....you had to see this view in person to believe it!
BigFish 07-29-2005, 09:19 PM Pic 4 is of me with my first Cutty stripes....small but caught on my own wood.....I was pleased!
Pic 5 is of Afterhours after he earned his first Cutty stripes on his junior spook!
BigFish 07-29-2005, 09:20 PM Pic 6 is one of Don's fish with a junior in his maw.....sweet!
Pic 7 is of Don with a fish on!
afterhours 07-29-2005, 09:21 PM boy, i need to go on a diet!
BigFish 07-29-2005, 09:23 PM On Friday afternoon we planned on fishing until 1:30 at which time we would need to hoof it across the island to catch the 3:00 o'clock ferry......at 12:30 Don had this fish explode on his junior spook....(I watched Don work this plug into a frothy frenzy with many explosive strikes) thank goodness he did not miss this fish!
BigFish 07-29-2005, 09:25 PM Cuttyhunk......see you in a few weeks! :bl:

eelman 07-30-2005, 05:46 AM Sounds like you had a ball! Congrats, What about fishing at night??? did you guys go out at night? with eels or plugs? I bet there were some monsters under the stars!
ok see above! :D
Mr. Sandman 07-30-2005, 06:07 AM I just missed you guys. I was there a good part of the week prior and left on Wed afternoon in the thick fog (and wind). (I went over in my own boat and also stayed at the bass club)
I only fished a couple hours on two nights and did one day on the boat. (Was with the kids and wife mainly relaxing, swimming and goofing around.)
Managed a few fish but nothing larger then 20# and only one fish that big, most others were in the 28" range but it was slow. One night the weed was real thick and the water really murky on the south side due to the strong west wind.
Always a great time there....how could you ***not*** have a good time at a place like that?
I have to say that the surf fishing was MUCH slower over there this year compared with with same week last year and the year before. Last year (the same week) I had a banner night with several nice large fish in the 30-40# range each night, all on plugs (mostly bernzy's) from the beach. (It was the highlight of my surf season last year and took one 37#er back to the club and fed everyone staying there the next evening for dinner) This year I could not locate them and I had one night this past week where the conditions were perfect and did not do very much. I guess that is why they call it fishing and not catching  No matter....I'll be back.
BigFish 07-30-2005, 06:08 AM When we arrived, the island was fog shrouded until after dark on Wednesday...so we never got to see any of the island that day except for the 75 yards in front of us! We fished all day Wednesday until 10:00 pm and got a few hours sleep and went back out at 3:00 am and fished through sunrise with no luck......that morning we began to be able to see the island and its cliffs and shoreline so we spent the day walking most of it down to the west end where those spectacular views were. There was quite a bit of rock weed and some monkey hair in spots but not bad......the wind was honking all day Thursday so we had to find a spot where we could get the wind at a minimum which happened to be the only spot we found fish. We fished until mid-day Thursday at about 2:00 and headed back to base to eat and squeeze in a nap. Back out about 7:00 and walked back to that spot and got alot of swirls and vicious hits but they were playing with us....but we loved the action just he same. No fish Thursday night until about 11:00 so we headed back to get a good nights sleep and figured the best course of action was to hit that spot after breakfast and fish it until we had to leave. It paid off with a few more fish and that beauty Don caught! You should have seen it taking line.....Don almost soiled his pants with visions of it wrapping him around a rock and losing it! Don played it cool and gave line when he needed to......he got it in close and I jumped in and grabbed it for him as he kept the line tight and slid it up onto the shallow rocks! He was elated and I was thrilled for him and envious all at the same time. It was a joy to listen to Don's VS 250 sing and to watch the rod double over as the fish tried to speed away with his lure. We had alot of action compared to how many fish we actually caught but it was a blast having fish whack the plugs into the air 2-3 times on each rerieve as we are both topwater plug junkies (sorry #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&) We felt we learned quite a bit about the island and its shoreline so next time we go...stay a little longer and be a bit more diligent at night.....we were just so exhausted at night after walking for miles and casting all day.....next time (maybe Sept.) we will concentrate on night time with eels. :D
BigFish 07-30-2005, 06:13 AM Sorry we missed you Sandman...would have been nice to meet you!
