Where I live its been a very tough year untill now when the blues are starting to come in. They certainly are a welcome sight when you cant buy a bass.

NorthShore has been very good for couple of weeks. Big pogies still around Salem. Herring chunks (when you can get it) working well around bold shore structure. Nice after a brutal May and June.

There ARE Bass around. I won't burn any spots and I won't say precisely how big the fish were but I will say I am talking about fish that are above "keeper" size. If you put your time in, and I mean every night for 3 or 4 hours in the middle of the night, you will find Bass.
Since last Monday I have had 5 fish 15+ #, 5 other fish in the 32 to 34" range and one absolute monster that I lost after 10 minutes on a straightened 3/0 3X xtra stong treble. In addition Friday morning I found about 100 fish all breaking on something(?) but they wouldn't touch anything including eels, Sluggos, red gills, big eye teasers and all the usual swimmers/needles. I believe there was a crab hatch going on.
And yes, I have a full time job and go to work everyday. It all comes down to how serious you are about catching fish. I have probably missed 4 or 5 nights intentionally since May. I only fish what I refer to as "the Black Hours". I sleep a couple of hours before I go and a couple of hours when I get home.
Of course, I can do this because my kids are grown and my wife doesn't really care what I do while she sleeps as long as it doesn't disturb her.

So, if you guys realy want fish, they are out there and catchable. It's called putting your time in.

Sick of hearing the "putting your time in" thing! It does not always apply. I put in more time than most....and I am as serious as any....May and June blew harder than a February Nor'easter and July was not much better! Word around is the fishing has sucked across the board! Some have found some good spots that are producing, but all my usual spots which have produced in previous years have run dry...and I fish alot of spots! So....trying totally new spots....hope things pick up and the fall is great! Last fall the good fishing had a window of a week in my usual spots and hen it was gone....and I fished the hell out of it! Granted I do not lay claim to being a "great" fisherman, but I hold my end up! Last year was lousey and this one, so far has been alot worse. I think it is lack of bait....as far as the Cape I blame the damn seals! :nailem:

Larry;
I dont think Paul is saying noone else puts there time in; Recently we have been finding some fish (him more than me) but he's right we have been concentrating on spots known to us to produce summer fish. Regardless of pauls recent fish,I still contend this season is WAY down for me from last year, and I'd wager other than a few scattered weeks of fish Paul would say the same...
That being said August is off to a more promising start this year than last.
Hey spence when you coming west?

BF - I think you need to alter your search pattern a bit...

Its no different than any other year IMO.

1)Do not get stuck on one spot if it is not producing move on.

2) Just because spot A had fish last year does not mean they will be there this year.

3) Patterns change, lots of things affect it.

I think the most important thing of all is to bounce around until you hit paydirt. Its a tough sport and it does take alot of time jjust as paul said, its said over and over but it really does boil down to time on the water. Now I know people have other obligations but, just because the tide is low or there is a bright moon dont stay home, unless your lure of bait is in the water you cannot catch fish.

I got lucky this year as the fish have been at the spot since may, had they not I would be all over the place looking. There are plenty of fish this year you will bump into them when you least expect it!!

I'm not catching as many fish this year as I have in the past.

I'm not going fishing as much as I used to though..2-3 times a week instead of 5 or 6.

My paycheck hasn't kept up with the price of gas :af:

I've been doing very well this year for big fish and had a banner night this past weekend fishing relatively shallow water. I didn't see anyone out fishing either. Like #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& said you gotta move, and cant get into a habit of dedicating all your time to a spot. Hit places that produced in the past but dont stay there too long if its not producing. Water temps are warming so the fish want an easy move from shallow to deep water. This year in the salt ive fished 99.99% eels and it pays off for bigger fish. You cant compete with the real thing. This time of year you have to move until you hit them.

Hey BF I have to agree with you. This year has been lousey. Blooos and no big fish to speak of. The bait is scarce as can be. :gorez:

I've been getting pretty frustrated in the past couple weeks. More than once, I've had "someone" fishing next to me hook up large while we're both using the same stuff at the ends of our lines. It's great to see someone cool catch a big fish, but it makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong. I think I've been doing far more picture-taking of others' catches than fishing lately. I might as well become some fisherman's personal photographer, as I'm getting quite adept at aiming and shooting a shining face holding a big fish accurately in the dark. Perhaps there was a voodoo curse on the UPS truck that delivered my new reel? I mean, it did take a week to get to me after I ordered it. That's enough time to go hit up Mama Boulay down South for a quick "no catchee da fish" spell. Hopefully it wears off soon. Putting in my time, including the 3-hour round-trip drive, is just getting more and more frustrating -- where are my fish??

Tonight will be a barometer of sorts for me and I know I am setting myself up to fail because the wind is all wrong...

But... I caught my biggest ever there last week.. and my uncle and a few others hooked up nice the other night...

If I dont hook up tonight.. its gonna be a break for bass for a few weeks..

I agree w/ you Rizzo,I too have been doing well w/ eels & I have to move around to find the fish not just location's but depth as well.Last week I caught my best for the season a 38#. I went last night found some fish after an hour but that storm moved in quicker than intisipated & I didn't feel like catching any bolts!

Ya gotta move around.
Rizzo congrat's on the fish(s) :kewl:
