A few of my palomar knots have failed on the mirage flouro that I have been using for leaders. What knot do you use for your terminal knot?

Thanks

Improved Albright from main line to leader.....(I also dab with Crazy Glue).........improved clinch from leader to terminal tackle.....

Improved clinch, but it's hard to tighten down on higher line weights.

Palomar. But I only use Seaguar floro. 40# and up I use needlenose to help cinch it down.

Palomar, Never had one fail, but on some of the stiffer lines you really have to work to snug it down properly.

Same here, haven't had a failure yet.

I'm also using mirage and tying palomar knots. No failures or issues of any sort. Just make sure to wet it good before cinching it down and get it good and tight. Even the 60 and 80# tie easily. Great stuff!

Palomar and improved clinch knots. I had an old hacksaw laying around and I lopped off the wooden handle for it. For eel rigs I slip the swivel into a small nail and then take the handle and it snugs right up with the curve in my hooks then I just pull it tight. How are your palomars failing? You getting teh curly q thinggie?

They have been failing with only a squiggly end remaining. I have been snugging them down with pliers, wetting them with spit, and pulling the eel hooks from a nail in my wall to synch the knot. This is with the 80# flouro.

IMO 80# test is overkill, and may be the cause of your problems.

I use the Palomar knot whenever it is feasible, for attaching a swivel or terminal tackle to the line. It can be a bit tricky on long lures with multiple trebles. I've NEVER had a palomar fail either with braided, mono, or flourocarbon.

Otherwise I used an improved clinch knot.

For attaching leader to line (or backing) I use an albright knot. I've never had a problem with an albright when attaching mono, flouro, or dacron (backing). But, I have had some problems attaching lighter (#30 test) braided to mono with an albright. Some guys like to use a "wind-on" swivel like the SPROs, but they're pricey.

I should say, it is overkill if you are targeting stripers. If larger prey is your quary, then by all means, throw on the 80 lb.

If you like a stiffer leader material but it doesn't knot real well for you, or even if it does, it might be worth trying some sort of knot tying lube.

I like using 60# Seaguar in the surf, but spit never seems to make the knot cinch down real nice; it still seems to catch a bit as I tighten it unless I use something to make it knot better.

For stripers I use a Palomar to go from my 50 or 65# Power-Pro to my swivel, then the Improved Clinch w/ Seaguar to go from the swivel to the snap.

For offshore critters, I go Bimini to an offshore swivel knot. Bulky, but strong.

Use an Orvis knot (google it for instructions). It's small, almost 100%, very fast to tie (once learned) and you don't need pliers to tighten with 80# line.

I just loop twice pull loop twice pull and do it 5 times then i do some other things till i think it good and pull as hadd as i can to see if it comes off...

I use an Improved Cinch Knot with 7 turns on Orvis Mirage in 40LB, 60LB, and 80LB fluoro. I've never had a slip.

Zacs, for me anyway, I use the 80LB when fishing around heavily rocky areas or when I want to get stripers but know the blues are present also. Otherwise, I use 60LB most of the time.

:btu: to each his own. for me, 40 lb in the sand or on the boat, 50 lb in the rocks. Uni to the swivell, palomar to the hook/clip. If blues are around in abundance, wire leader. If not in abundance, 50 lb. Man, I find the 50 lb. stiff, 80 lb. must be like a trying to tie a knot in a coat hanger...

I'm using the Mirage 44lb Fluro for leaders and have always used the Improved Clinch knot with an extra overhand knot after I cinch the knot up.
Never had one slip

Thanks guys. I use 80# around the rocks but most of the time I use 50#.

In heavier mono (I never saw the need to use heavy flouro) I use a simple clinch with fewer turns. IMO it's more important to get the knot snug than it is to add the turns or pass it thru the loop with as you do with an improved clinch.

Another option is to use the "non slip loop" knot. Tie a loose overhand knot in the leader about 6-8" from the end. Pass the tag end thru the eye of the lure, leaving yourself about an inch diameter loop between the overhand knot and the lure. Then go up thru the overhand knot with the tag end, take three wraps around the standing part, and bring the tag end down thru the open overhand, then tighten it up. The knot is basically a three-turn bowline.

Palomar or Uni - I have had a failure or two, but I am sure I was operator failure. I was tired or lazy and didn't tighten it down enough.

If the knot is slipping, but you are confident in your skills you can try adding zap-a-gap or super glue. Or you can tie an over-hand knot on the tag end before trimming.

palomar or uni.

palomar seems to be the easiest if one rembers the order

i use the improved clinch knot. get some rigging golves(you can get these at a offshore based fishing store) and pull the standing line hard to snug it up also wet the knot before snuging it up. add a dab of zap-a-gap slow set glue after the knot is done
