Howdy fellas. Its been awhile since I dropped in on you Yanks. Kinda rude of me. How do?

I know many of you guys love the buckies so I thought maybe you could help me out a little bit. Heretofore my livelining has been snagged bunker or cast netted spot and mullet. I am thinking about livelining some herring in the spring. Trouble is I haven't caught a herring since I used to dipnet them in a millpond spillway at the head of a tidal creek when I was a kid. Can someone let me know the techniques used and type places to look? (I am already assuming the aforementioned heads of tidal creeks)

PLUG - Howya doing?

You take a dipnet and you dunk it into the spillway of a tidal pond...

Seriously, you find a herring run, not sure how they are setup or defined down your way, with the current moving, you can net them at a choke point or an official run. Some places you need to sneak up on them as they school and dip on them. The best I've seen at it was Tobias with 2 nets going after schooling herring... Obviously, see what the local regs are too.

Some managed runs, the officers will actually get them for you so it really depends on where you are...

Me, I go to one of several runs and dip into a choke point like between some rocks. The swifter water brings more into the net.

I've also noticed, and this is just based on observation, that the runs tend to produce later the further north you travel. Runs in Maine are going well after Rhody & Mass have shut down. You probably want to see how early they run down your way....

...John, don't forget to mention how they rest in "HOLES"...sometimes when ya can't see the bottom in a certain spot, dip the net in there..nice and deep ...and WHAMMY!!!..

...or go at night!!!... ...and scoop up against the wall at your local run....just kiddin, that's ILLEGAL...;)..."I AM A LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, MR. OFFICER, SIR..."..really I am...:D
