I'm taking the Alert II ferry overe to Cuttyhunk for a day of fishing. First time so I'm not sure of the layout, I know it's not a big island but my question is would It be helpful to bring a bike with me to help cover some ground. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Bike would be marginal. Yes, you could cover more territory on the mainland side of the island from Crescent Beach to probably the monument and the Vineyard facing side from before the Cutty Bass Club to Can-o-whoopass but from the Bass Club to the SW point, the area of the bass stands and south, there is no legal access thru the bird sanctuary to get to the water. Acutally running the bike on the beach is not practical...

As far as theivery, I don't think the bike would be touched as there has not been any larceny since GB left the island :rotf2:

Walk it....Afterhours and I were there last week! See thread...I will bump it for you. ;)

Thanks for the advice. I noticed from the pictures no waders, would you bring them next time? Also I intend to travel light so only one rod, would you go with 9 or 10' to throw topwater stuff.

We brought our waders and had every intention of using them....but with all the walking we did scouting the island out (walked no less than 10 miles over the entire place) we would have sweat our butts off! Next time we go we will carry our waders in a bag and put them on at the spot we choose to fish. More night fishing next time......day fishing was great though when we found them! Where are you staying?

Oh...forgot....bring korkers! As for rods....bring 2 (in case you have an accident and break a guide) but bring a heavy rod....one you can keep a big fishes head up with....all those rocks will break you off quick if you can't keep its head up. I used a 1205 Arra cut to 9 1/2 feet.

I'm only going to be able to get one day in as I'm going to be on a vacation with the family in Falmouth. I've heard so much about the place that I really just want to see it and If I get a few fish that will be a bonus.

Just one day...fishing daylight hours? No waders, one stout rod, lots of topwater plugs.....pencil poppers, swimmers and try to get some of the Afterhours junior spooks that you see in that thread....as you can see my buddy Don hammered fish with them....we got about 100 strikes each, he on his junior spook and me on my pencil poppers. Walk the beach, toss them to where you think it looks fishy and keep moving....search as much water as you can cover.

50 pound flurocarbon leaders also.

Please tell us your're not going over on the AM boat and returning that PM!!! That's like flying to Australia for lunch!!!! It'll kill ya to leave. Get a pass card from the family, go over on the PM boat, walk and fish the afternoon/evenng to get a feel of the place, fish all night, sleep on the beach if you must, and return on the AM boat....or the PM boat if you haven't gotten your fill. (Like that ever happens)

Bring Korkers, secure your wading jacket over your waders, and use a wading staff. Pencil poppers can't be beat in daytime, large wooden swimmers (Dannys, Beachmasters, etc), and needles at night. Practice night fishing there by blindfolding yourself and walking on vaseline-covered bowling balls with frequent boulders placed amongst them. Do this while having a friend hit you with a sand-filled pillowcase to simulate waves.
Fish into the wind. You want the rough water, especially on the south and south-west shores. grb

Hey, don't get too crazy about the rocks. While it can be tricky navigating even around the old bass stands, it's totally doable. You CAN fish without waders too. Your week's weather looks great so travel light, right Slip?
