He got it, lashed it to his boat, only to have it ate by sharks.

Interesting reading. Swordfishing in the gulf stream using tarred handline.

Old Man's a great story, quick read, simple, but full. Glad to hear you enjoyed it as well. Might I suggest "The Hungry Ocean" by Linda Greenlaw? Commercial swordfishing. I know some people aren't so keen on her views, and she's moved down a few notches in my book by coming out with a silly recipe book, but it's still a good story worth a read. :read:

Bassbabe, the recipe book is her third or fourth book. I think you should read striper wars by Russell. It just came out. It should be required reading for all of us.

Yah, Swimmer. I read life on a small island or whatever it was called, also by Ms. Greenlaw. I liked it only because she reminded me of myself, but I wouldn't put anyone else thru the reading of it. I will have to check out Striper Wars once I finish Empty Oceans by Richard Ellis. Jury's out on that one, as it seems a little radical and the information at times is sketchy. After the first few pages, I began reading it with a pen in hand to mark all the facts that need checking and interesting points to find out more about. I've been meaning to get the cod book by Mark Kurlansky for years now, but I haven't seen it at my local library, and there's no way I'm paying that much money for a tiny book, no matter how badly I want to read it.

BB, is that book the one written by another Maine fisherman that has the Greenlaw foreward.

Doesn't seem as if the man is a fisherman. I believe he's an artist and author. He's a little bleeding-heart...wouldn't peg him for a fisherman. A friend nabbed the book for a bit, so I'll get back to ya when I get it back, if that's not the case.

i love that book! had to read it for my english lit class freshman year in high school.. that has to hurt at the end with it being eaten by sharks.. and yet he still dreamed of the lions on the beach..I gotta good memory huh? :)

I met the Greenlaw chick as well. She came onboard a boat I was sailing on as a student, talked to us, signed our books, the whole deal. Then she motored off in her little boat back to her home. Short of being companion-less, she has a pretty enviable life.
