I have been using 30lb power pro and I am having all kinds of trouble with the reliability of the line with premature breakoffs and fraying line on my new 6500 mag elite.

I also get one very small rat nest but that nest seems to go way too deep into the spool. I have been using conv for over 15 yrs but somthing seems odd with this line.

I also use 40lb power pro on my 704z and 30lb on my 965 before, is it just defective 30lb line? I will admit that I did buy a 30lb bulk spool for the first time so I am not sure that this makes a difference.

I guess I can pick up some mono and compare the results....seems very odd though.

go to 65 power pro.... you'll be happy :D

I can see jigging in the canal with 65 but not tossing bombers...YIKES!!

Dont you have to be careful when using 65 and a lighter action rod.....the rod will break before the line will.

It's all about the drag.
I'm not a fan of PP. Try Fireline, or Cortland Spectron if you want braid.

50 lb Power Pro is thinner than 30lb Fireline and works well on 6500 Abus.I don't think you could get enough 65lb on a 6500 to land a large in current.

You won't break anything if you set your drag as if you were using 20# mono ;)

Sorry about that. I meant was that if you were hung up the rod would break before the 65 would.....but the leader would break before the 65 would anyway.

i use 65 lb test braid and 50 lb leader material/ when i get hung up i thumb the spool and walk back keeping the rod straight. it breaks at the leader every time :D

What about casting distance with the 65??

cast fine for me- i dont use small bombers that much.. mostly dannies & darters. the larger the diameter the easier it is to cast IMO...

ihave been using 50 lb. on my calcutta 400 for 4yrs and i love it i have had no problemes at all . 30 is to light .i cast 3)8 to1 1)2 with no trouble i have caught bass from 12in. to 40lb.s on the same outfit .try the 50. best of luck to you the rest of the season. bill

I use 17lb Yo-zuri Hybrid on my Abu 7000 CL for beach fishing, with 30-50lb flourocarbon leader. Of course, I fish mostly sandy beaches and don't have to deal with the rocks like many of you Rhode Islanders do. I tried braided on my conventional but didn't like it...too unforgiving for the slightest over-spool. Now this is for bait fishing and not for pluggin. I've caught many fish in the 40lb class over the years with this set up. Never lost one to a broken line.

got 50 pp on my 6500cs mag, works fine.

I agree I will buy the 50 because the 30 is too thin and is a complete mess if I get a nest.

Dude your killing me!! The 65 is like throwing rope! I am only tossing the little stuff with the mag elite.

I've been having backlash and breakoff issues, too, with the 30, Lurch, and it wasn't a bulk spool.

I have a little Shimano Corsair...think the model's in the 400s (I flake on details) -- would going to a higher test be advisable?

I normally fish 65. Tried 50 this year and found it to "dig" a little too much. The 65 does'nt dig at all, I can only imagine the 30 would be worse.Move up

I think PP is too soft for casting conventionals.

You're better off using a firmer coated line like Spiderwire Stealth (which is essentially reformulated Berkley Whiplash) if you want to cast with a revolving spool reel.

PP in the heavier line tests (above 30 lb) is good on conventionals for BOAT applications where you're not casting.

The lighter stuff is good on spinners.

In any case, if you're stuck with the power pro, pull the line off, take that line, dunk it in a bucket of water, and then WET-PACK the line back onto your spool.

I use 50# pp and 35# sepctron on my abu 6500s. 30# pp is too thin for that reel. I have had plenty of break-offs with the pp but none with the spectron. I get marginally better distance with the pp.

Any PP under 50 seems to dig its self in the spool.Its so thin slippery that it will dig in under the slightest pressure or loose retreave. I use 50 and 65# but I tossed 30 on one of my smaller set ups and every outing it seemded to get burried and then I would get the nest and would sit there digging. I switched back to 50# and have had little to no problems..... Just play the drag...
