I was just chating with Moses about this and he suggested I make a post. I'm heading over to the vinyard tonight (for a few days) and am hoping to get in some shore fishing. Any thoughts or gerneral suggestions on where I might try or what I might use to entice a bonito? Can you even reach them from shore? Thanks

Mikey - as discussed, I've had luck from a boat along the backside trolling near Squibby. I'm sure some regulars can suggest some general areas to concentrate on. Perhaps even a local bat&tackle shop though I'm not sure on those either.

Hi Elmo, If your fishing from shore, try Edgartown lighthouse, Edgartown warf as they call it, chappy beach on the other side of the ferry, also Menemsha from the jetty fi you can handle the crowds, front of the jetty is your best bet. These places are very eventfull with bones until the albies take full force but even if the albies go into full force most of the bones you see taken will be from the warf.

Small metals, deadly #^&#^&#^&#^&s, crippled herring, swedish pimples, live bait from the warf, squid, butterfish, herring. will work.

From shore your best bet is East beach and Cape Pogue/Cape Pogue gut. However you need a beach sticker to get out there. Unless you know how to get to the gut off the chappy road on the left.

Also Menemsha is a good spot from shore, but like others have said it can get crowded and you get the occasional jerk in the boat who runs over you line with a fish on :lossinit:

I've caught at least 30+ bonito this season by boat already. I have not tried from the shore (yet) and only know of a few days when they were in tight enough for shore guys to get them. (my shore fishin in August slows and my boat fishing increases)

They had a two day blitz at menemsha in rage of the jetty jockies but they have not been there in some time now. They seem to be hanging out on the shoals in the sound and just offshore. When they do come in close the key is (IMO) to fish ***early*** in the morning. My favorites are east beach (permit) wasque (no permit and you can walk), and eastville beach for bones. Sometimes they also show up off of tashmoo on the outgoing tide too. But If I had to pick one place.....east beach on chappy. (I don't care for the jetty crowd at menemsha even if there are fish) Plenty of room and they run up and down the beach. Once the albies get there it will be more difficult to land the bones.

Think early morning with small metals and light line and you will connect. :kewl: I find they are more finicky as the day wears on this time of year.

Elmo, No we did not hook up any tuna yesterday, but they were defiantly there, and they were crashing bait hard, more so than we have seen this year, lately tehy have been feeding in pods but just kind of rolling and feeding, today they looked like shooting torpedo's. Big busts everywhere, it was really cool. We ended up calling the day short as the wind came up on us out there, ended up coming back thru all of those storms.

Not Fun!!!!

I plan to fish early am (4-8am) so hopefully I will not find to many people out there. I am usually calling it a day when others begin. I will let you know if I find any fish when I get back. Just to follow up, I did not get my first bonito or actually get to fish the spots mentioned above due to time constraints as well as a couple of locals saying chances were very slim. What I did have was access to a kayak on the large pond used in the movie Jaws, (can't pronounce or spell the name). I must have caught a dozen schoolies 20 to 26" while trolling from the kayak and it was quite an experience! A few of the fish actually towed me around a little.

Good advice....I was on a boat outside of Edgartown harbor and the guys on shore were doing well on albies and bonita. Also, my Bro-in-law hooked up IN the harbor, while the boat was tied up and I was making a coffee and donut run.

Nice, sounds like the locals stared me wrong. Didn't want me competing for a spot maybe. Still had a great time though. My ass is still sore from all the bike riding we did!
