I would have asked here before going out and spending money on something I don't know anything about and then posting the question after the fact! :wiggle: Since you ask now I suggest you return the rod, get your dough back and pick up a 9 footer, something light to medium action that you can both plug with and maybe drift a chunk with......baby steps Striperboy.

Striperboy...you asked! Do you want help or not? You are too small to throw a 12 foot rod worth having it so get yourself a 9 like we suggest. A 12 is for high, rough surf SB and I really think you would benefit from a lighter rod. How old are you and how tall? What kind of fishing do you do mostly? Plugging, chunking....what do you do?

Im 6'5" and my 2 10' rods are all I need for the canal.

I dunno.. thats a lot of rod waving over your head.

Take it back and get a refund SB. It will wear you out inside of a dozen casts and because you don't have the size to get a great cast from it.....you will be casting a lot less than you will from a 9 footer. Just because the rod is huge does not mean you will get a great, long cast! I can cast just as far with my 9 footers as I can with my 10 footers. Any rod over 10 feet is a waste unless one is going against an angry ocean with high rollers! You want a great rod for the money? Go to Wal-mart and pick yourself up a 9 foot ugly stick! Nice rod, durable, casts well and you will get more bang for the buck from tha rod! :kewl:

You must weigh about 120 pounds? If you are only casting 20 yards with your other rod I doubt you are casting 60 with the big stick! I am 6' 5" tall and 300 pounds SB and don't feel comfortable with anything over 10 feet....its just too darn much! I got a nice 1205 Arra that already wears me out when I cast it....my 9 foot 108-1 I can cast all day and night, get good distance and it handles fish nice.....I need more back bone for bigger fish, I got a 108-3 that can land large anywhere I want to fish. Get a niner boy......you get your uncle to bring you to MSBA Plug Night next week and we can talk. :kewl:

Nope! See there you go! You need to gather more knowledge SB before you make these decisions. We are just trying to help......the rod must be comfortable for your size.....and a 9 is what you need. :kewl: Ugly Stick is made by Shakespeare.....check them out in a nine footer, something with a light action if you are plugging. :kewl:

I would recommend an 8 footer for you based on age and size. Something that will handle about 3/4 to 3 OZ. Its all about timing , not length and strength. until you can get the timing and good rythm down with a shorter rod , you are wasting your efforts on a big rod.

A good caster will outcast you every time with the 8 footer compared to you with the 12 footer if you can't handle it.

SB, what will you be throwing with it?
Like Bigfish said, a 9' will be more than enough.
Just get a rod that matches the style fishing you do and the weight you'll be throwing. Ugly stick makes a decent rod for the $, they are too whippy for my liking, but may be fine for you. Shop around and ask questions before you buy, that's waht we're here for.

9ft is the standard all around size for plugs.eels, jetty fishing and the surf those 12ft jobs have unneeded hight to them it gets in the way most of the time. i am 5'11 and weigh 200lbs so 9ft will be good for you as well. a 8ft rod is limiting in most areas. ugly stick will get you by but a nice light tica or tsunami cant be beat for the $$.

SB, I'm just an inch taller than you, and my 9' is perfect. I had an 8...it was okay...I guess. Go with the 9. I have a Tica -- good stuff, and not hideously expensive. Try getting a rod at a local bait shop -- I'm sure they'd be more than happy to help you find what would be best for you and give you some pointers or advice if you have any questions. Good luck finding something that is both what you like and the best fit for you.

thats if he can get from his allowence. also he needs to pick a application for what he is fishing and where he fishes at. cuz if he doesnt, then he will be like me giving a saltheart a hard time about what rod to make for my abu 7500 BG. i say go with 8 or 9. 8 will suit u enough for fishing piers or jetties.

I kind of like Striperboys moxie starting off with the 12' rod. Better than casting into the canal with that than a 6' Ugly stick with a dare devil lure tied on.
