Yesterday on friday the 19th of August we had a great trip with Ken Mecik of Bayonne, NJ and his two sons Dave and Kevin. Leaviing Green Harbor in Marshfield at 3:30 AM(yes you read it correctly) due to tides we headed to the "BE" buoy to troll for tuna. They were there and five times we had them slamming behind the rigs but they just would not take the bait. I personally believe with the calm seas they were a little on the leader shy side. We will make it up come 01 September when charter boats will be able to retain 3 per day.

Well anyways we headed off east of Stellwagen and hit the cod and haddock pretty good. Ken landed the largest a whale cod weighing 62 LBS. The photo was taken after being bled which does not reflect the true girth this speciman had.

Back to it again later this week and I hope everyone enjoys their weekend.

Respectfully,

Dave

Looks kinda skinny in the middle, big old cod usually have a big hang belly. Did "bleeding" make that fishes gut shrink ?

Nice fish, 62 pounds. Did you put in for the Govorners Cup ?

The fish was nice and round, once I cut the throat, much of the gut area collapsed due to the air being forced out. I never think of the cups, mounts or anything else and end up with the fillet knife in hand on way home.

What kind of a fight does a fish like that give yeah? Good runs or pulling up a barn door? Paul

I would have to say a little of both, the fish did manage to peel off line on a pretty good drag with the rod doubled right over. Sometimes though, the smalller fish seem to outfight the larger ones.

Awesome, Dave. Jules, if we aren't into tuna, can we go after cod like this?
