View Full Version : What's the strangest item you've ever 'landed'?
McSpooled 08-21-2005, 08:03 AM We've all been there,, seemingly hung up on the bottom,, but after a few good pulls you end up hauling in some lost 'treasure' that the ocean decided to give back.
> This article (http://www.boston.com/news/odd/articles/2005/08/20/fisherman_finds_wallet_lost_39_years_ago/) in the globe talks about a wallet lost 39 years ago recovered!
What's the strangest / most interesting item you've hauled out?
CANAL RAT 08-21-2005, 08:21 AM i hooked a movie dinner tray off of the plymouth harbor jetty
Mike P 08-21-2005, 10:36 AM I didn't land it, but I saw a guy fight and eventually land a 6' diameter beach umbrella once---fully open--in the moving water of Fire Island inlet.
He thought he had the mother of all rays. He walked over two miles to land the sucker.
basswipe 08-21-2005, 10:55 AM When I was a teenager I was out with my buddy Gerry in his 14ft skiff when he hooked into something huge while trolling...........a sunken 5 gal. bucket.
A fairly common item but the excitement was intense up intil that point when we saw the bucket.
I landed an old style "White fuel" Red Colman lantern,I went to X-Mart got replacement parts for it & got it up & running.
BrianS 08-21-2005, 11:10 AM Does a 3lb spider crab count?
well.. maybe not that big... but it was HUGE!
striprman 08-21-2005, 11:14 AM I caught some very strange looking rocks (snagged them with a cod jig)
Giant basket starfish, tires (thought I had a halibut)
I watched a guy (on a party boat) loose a good fish, about 30 seconds later
I hooked a good one too. 18 pound wolf had the other guys jig still firmly attached to its upper jaw (I gave the guy back his jig and when the boat moved, I showed him how to tie an improved clinch knot)
lobsters, parts of gill nets, giant musels with 20 foot strands of kelp attached, fishing rod with reel (squidder) attached, cod heads (body bit off by sharks)... there must be some other stuff

eelman 08-21-2005, 12:23 PM Not exotic, but once and only once I was fishing at narrow river with small jigs for school bass and caught 8 or 9 good size fluke.. needles to say I ate good that night!
Mike P 08-21-2005, 01:34 PM I watched Don Willis land a small skiff once, in the Canal, that had broken away from whatever it was tied to.

That cinder block had to be rough. Pantys are always good to catch.
theSURF121 08-22-2005, 12:04 PM While fluke fishing, my friend hooked into what we thought was a dormat and we were right. Pulled up a large welcomemat.
