I just picked up some Whiplash in the 80lb 17lb DIA. flavor. I just put it on my reel (spinning) with 15lb mono backing tied the double Uni knot and I am ready to go. I just have a couple questions.

1.) How long does this stuff last?

2.) I bought it because I am looking for more distance and sensitivity I got the 17lb Dia so I could fill my reel with the 300yds I dont care much about the strength. How much better is whiplash Vs. Mono in the casting Dept.? Will I get much further casts?

3.) I plan on using coastlock snaps at the end of my line since this will be purely for pluggin so is the polomar better than the Uni for attaching the snaps?

I am a newbie with this braid stuff so if you have any other advice that would be great!

Thanks

Anthony,
I had bad luck with Whiplash on spinning reels, many windknots and snap offs during casting due to deep rooted knots. I now use Fireline on all of my spinning reels and have had great success. It actually gets better the more you use it (it gets softer).

Using braids will get you much greater casting distances and it is much more sensitive when retrieving bucktails, lures, eels etc. Also you get better hookups because you can set the hook quicker without stretch; you get a better feel for the end of the line than with mono.

In my opinion it lasts as long as you have enough on your reel that it does'nt hamper your casting distance. You do need to strip some off now and again.

I don't tie direct to a snap, I still use a mono leader, but I use both improved cinch & palomar knots tied to my barrell swivel and neither has failed.

300 yds of 80lb whip plus backing...geesh, thats alot of line:eek:...my nautil 7500 holds 200 yds of 65lb whip and 50 yds of 50lb backing...

whiplash casts very well...i've had zero issues with it on my nautil once i got used to it...just remember a couple of important things...braid is not mono, so any knot/loop is bad...at the end of each cast after you close your bail make sure to gently pull your line tight from the spool to take out any slack...this prevents loops from forming...it will be second nature before you know it...

i only use palomar knots when connecting braid to snaps or swivels...drop of super glue on the knot for piece of mind...i use a 3-ft piece of 40lb big game mono for a leader to connect to the snap...if you hang up, this leader will break before your braid does...

i use duolocks rather than coastlocks...yes, i've had one or two open and lost a couple of fish but i think that the action is better...

good luck

Anthony,
jettyjockey18 hit some good points. You'll want to use a swivel at the end of your line with a mono leader between your offering and your line. The leader does a couple of things for you, it takes most of the beating and is easy to replace, it adds a tiny bit of stretch that braid doesn't offer and you should use a leader with a lower breakign strength than your main line so that you break the leader and $ave the braid.

Braid stands up well and lasts much longer than mono. I presently have two seasons on my Cortland Spectron, with no plans to change it next year.

I went down the water before my wife went to work to try it out. It casts great!! I could have got even more distance but.... the braid was cutting up my finger any solutions to that problem? Maybe a band aid or something. I have the whiplash on an Emblem-Z so tangles were not a problem (ABS spool) Also the reel has a feature that lays the line evenly so it doesn't get bunched up and cause more tangles. I have the 5000A and it holds 310yds of 17lb I still have a bit of line left over. Stuff isn't cheap at $29.99 per 300 yards.

Thanks for the advice!!!!!! :)

Cut the tips off of those yellow kitchen gloves wives use to do the dishes, or use electrical tape.

...CALLISSES!!!....THEY'LL GROW, JUST KEEP CASTING!!!...;)

If ya get hung up, wrap the braid around your pinky a few times...and walk backwards... :smash: :smash: ...DOAH!!!

...and then pick it up and put it in a baggy...:behead:

stuff hurts more than thin mono!! I was afraid to cast again after the first 2 casts........

I think this stuff would just cut the callisses off!

anthony, try tightening your drag...your fingers are getting cut because the line is slipping slightly when casting...callouses will help too...;)

AnthonyN, there are a couple of other little tidbits you might want to know.

NEVER grab that line with a fish on the other end, or when snagged up, UNLESS you do a couple of wraps around your hand and then pull the fish too you. This will keep the line from sliding in your hand and possibly keep you from getting a nasty stingin cut in the salt!!!!

Some wind knots do come out, never pull the line tight to the knot just try picking at it a little at a time, sometimes the line can invert itself into a loop when casting. You will know when it happens as you will hear it, retrieve your line back in slowly and try and work the knot out. Sometime it can save you alot of money on a long cast. If it won't come out, Cut and re-tie.

Palomar knot is the best when attaching to a snap. I have never had it fail on me yet. I use strickly fireline now as I like it better. I have tried the whiplash but wasn't impressed with the lightness in the air as you cast and got a tremendous amout of wind knots. But I was fishing a much lighter test on spinning gear. Good Luck!!!
