Never fished it for salmon, only steelhead. Defenitely hit Hemlock Run for the sheer beauty and large holes.:D Be prepared for huge crowds.:(

I fish it every year, definately look into fishing douglastone run, wich is private and it'll cost you about $20 per day but it's well worth it, best spot in the river. Also hit the fly fishing area only in Altmar in the lower protion of the river.
Good Luck :)

I'm partial to the rapids before Black Hole-not too far up the river from the Douglaston run.

It's a zoo-be prepared for that....but I have a great time up there every October. Nothing like seeing the sidewalks in downtown covered in Korker marks!

Oh yeah, in case no one told you-korkers are VITAL!!!!

Its been more than 10 yrs since I been up there.we used to go to the litttle black hole below the rapids up JUST up from douglaston.i used to cross that river in the dark wit as many beers as i could fit in a soft cooler in the dark an my rod an some gear an a pc of smoked salmon.an leave in the dark on the way out.ur hooks can have a gap of no largewr than 1/2 " tie (snell) a boatload of leaders bout 30" long.we used to use 17 lb xt same thing for the mainline.go to Tony's when u enter town an get a coupla bags of the big splitshot an some dark eggs or foam.U gotta have something on the hook.depending on the gate or speed of the current 2-5 shot will do.cast an drift till u feel some tension on the line slowly sweep then set the hook if u feel something.Snagging is not allowed.EVERY DEC officer in the state does a stint there when the run is goin They are watching for moochers.Thats why the dark foam if u do hit one in the side or something its harder for the dec dude to see that u snagged it.Do not keep a fish that is not snagged in the mouth as they are every where's watchin u so don't take any chances.Only the greenest of fish are worthy of eating anyways as they taste nasty when thev'e been in the river to long.pray for rain on ur way up.they will increase the flow an they will come pourin in.its alot of fun the biggest got up there was 34 lbs.U hook one in the tail an be prpared for the ride of ur life bust em off quick if u want ur line bring a extra spool.for some real sport get a lite noodle type rod an 4-8 lb test an get some egg sacks.they do get some steelies that follow the salmon up to eat there eggs.there's many places to fishif it rains before u get there they could be up river like the tretle area.Take some time an go to the hatchery check out the fishladders an stuff very cool.

Thanks for the tips guys. I just got back last night WOW what a trip.We didn't get up there until midnight friday and just slept in the car few hours. They guy I was with rented a boat for the morning so we were up at ass crack of dawn motoring into the estuary. after a few minutes we were into fish. I took me a little while to figure out the techinique and my companion had already hooked three fish and landed one before I hooked up. My first Salmon. 22 lbs and nice and silver and fresh!! hooked right in the corner of the mouth. We got into a few more as the morning went one but its difficult to land the fish up there.

That after noon we hit the wall in town which is quite a scene with tons of fisherman and fish. I have never seen such high concentration of fisherman and a community that is purely drawn on fishing its quite an experience. Ever see a burger king with half the patrons wearing waders ? :tooth:

Sunday morning we hit up ellis hole and to my surpirse and everyone else. I hooked into 4 fish and landed one again around the 20lb mark but I released this one. The funny thing was no one elso hooked up at that hole while we were there, I had the hot hand and I was the rookie. Afterwards we went down to the big black hole and little black hole. The were both crowded but there were lots of fish being caught and I thought this was the prettiest part of the river we fished. Never did get a chance to go to the douglas part but after this I'm going to make the trip at least once every fall What a fun time!!!

PS on the way baack we did check out the hatchery. Cool stuff I saw some fish in the ladders that were easily 40 + lbs.
